EA Screws Nintendo fans yet again (No Ultimate Team, Physics in Madden 13)

http://espn.go.com/blog/playbook/tech/post/_/id/1471?

A portion of an ESPN interview with EA's Yuri Bialoskursky...

ESPN Playbook: Don’t you think Nintendo consumers are going to be frustrated by getting an inferior version of “Madden” again? The Infinity Engine is what defines “Madden 13,” yet it’s nowhere to be seen on the Wii U.

Yuri Bialoskursky: It’s not for a lack of want. We definitely wanted to get the physics into the game. The Infinity Engine is something that is a point of interest for “Madden” fans, it’s just something we weren’t able to achieve for this first year on the new hardware. A lot of times, new hardware comes with new challenges. But we were able to add things to “Madden” on a lot of different levels, like being able to draw your own hot routes and being able to change your plays on the fly and create your own plays, giving you the ability to do whatever you want to do pre-play. Play-calling is another area that could be underestimated at face value. You have your playbook fully exposed to you. You don’t have to dig through menus and dig back out of menus to find the perfect play. There’s a lot of searching around, I think, on the other consoles. Just the way it’s laid out enables you to access everything very quickly. Then, of course, you’re able to utilize substitutions and packages, making changes very simply and very intuitively by just tapping and swiping the screen.

ESPN: One feature that you were able to bring over to the Wii U is Connected Careers. How big is that showing the system’s online capabilities?

YB: That’s one of the things we’re most excited about. All of the parity points we do have with the other consoles. Connected Careers is the biggest one. Thirty-two connected people in their own league, being able to play head-to-head. Obviously we’ll have all of the other head-to-head and leaderboards and lobbies like our other consoles as well. So yeah, online is definitely an emphasis for both Nintendo and for us, and we can’t wait to see people out there engaging more so than they probably ever have on a Nintendo console.

ESPN: But how can you say that online is such an emphasis and then not include features like Madden Ultimate Team?

YB: Madden Ultimate Team is something that we’re not going to have in year one. It’s another one that we plan to add in as we go.

The Wii U is new hardware just like Madden 06 was new for XBox 360 and Madden 07 for Playstation 3. How ironic is it that arguably the most powerful system of the 3 HD systems gets the most inferior game? Sadly, misinformed consumers will see this as Nintendo being the most inferior system overall because of efforts like this. And EA, we know you've had development kits for quite a while now, probably before Madden 13 even began development, despite all the dev kit updates.

And you know what stinks? This is a lose-lose situation for Nintendo fans. If you buy the game and it's a success, EA will be like "see? We can half-ass the Wii U version and still make money". If the game bombs because consumers may be smarter than to purchase an inferior version of Madden, EA will 3DS the Wii U and be like "see? No one bought our game. We don't have a Madden audience on Wii U, so we're not making any more Madden games on Wii U".

Here is how the Infinity Engine works on the XBox 360 and PS3 versions of the game. Thanks Sciz!

The 360 got a gimped version of Madden the first few years. New consoles usually get rushed ports the first couple of years until the install base grows. Just how it is.

I expect no less of EA, Madden is their easy money mode. They release shitty product for the first few years of a console cycle while gamers pay to beta test then by mid-life the "next gen" games finally achieve parity with the old ones. Madden 05 is still a better game than anything they've put out yet on these new systems.

Wii U isn't powerful enough for Madden NFL's new high-tech computer game physics confirmed.

How is this being sold as something 'new' in 2012? Physics?

How ironic is it that arguably the most powerful system of the 3 HD systems gets the most inferior game?
I'm not really a Nintendo fan, but I'm pretty sure it's not arguable.

Maybe im not ready it right, but they seem to be planning to add Ultima team later. Or maybe they meant for the next Madden?

Its a mixture of new console and manpower. Madden WiiU probably has a pretty tiny team as they are still making a Wii version this year.

They should treat it better but its just EA being EA. They shit on the new consoles each generation though PS4/360 will probably get lucky because the WiiU will take the generational shit and they will get to benefit from the bugs etc worked out on Wii U

And forgive me if this info has already been posted.

I dunno. I share your negative feelings about this and I won't be buying Madden '13 for Wii U because of this decision, but I don't think its an indication of future offerings. It's launching 3-4 months late on new hardware, and it does have console exclusive features. It's not all that surprising and I'm pretty confident Madden '14 will be uniform on Wii U.

They sure as heck did it to the 3DS. I sure hope they don't do that to Wii U too.

And that makes it worse. It's coming out after the other versions and it's still inferior. Even worse, we might start seeing some sales of the Pas3 and XB360 version of the game by the time the Wii U version launches at full price.

hahahahaha

EA always skimps out of features when bringing Madden to new hardware, the only exception being 07 on the Wii because that was basically an upclocked Gamecube, and that version ended up being the most content-rich because they were skimping out on features for the PS3 and 360 editions back then. They probably didn't have as much time to work on this one either compared to the PS3 and 360 versions. The even said they just couldn't get those things up and running "on new hardware" and "for year one". It's already been hinted that the Wii U's architecture is actually closer to the PS4 and next Xbox than to current gen, it just performs like a current gen system. Probably different enough to throw off the Madden team in the short dev cycle they have.

The same thing'll happen when they put out Madden 14 on the PS4 and next Xbox, and the Wii U version might actually be the most content-rich one that year.

Next madden.

Not surprised its not going to be on par with the other editions in the slightest. Both the 3DS and Vita got this treatment with various titles (and still are) and the PC is still treated like crap (no Madden since 08 and it took FIFA a long ass time to get a respectable PC product).

Without Ultimate Team I guess that safeguards Nintendo Network Accounts from being hacked. Wouldn't want to see them stolen a la Fifa/xbl in the first month of a unified account system on wii u.

We'll see.

Those games were on a new engine, Madden WiiU is not.

This is correct.

No FUT is probably due to Nintendo's online.
No Physics is probably due to the CPU.

So it's more like Nintendo screws Nintendo fans.

That would be true if it was actually FIFA's fault, but it's not.

I don't think this is a lose-lose situation just because EA keeps showing that it won't treat the Wii-u with any respect, so, why bother with them? To get more half assed ports?

Huh

It does have online, and fully connected careers

I dont even know what Ultimate team is tho

It has Physics, just not the new physics engine, is using the old one

Edit

Looked up Madden Ultimate team lol, its some fantasy football junk and trading cards, umm no big loss there.

I play Madden for Franchise mode and online and offline with friends, not that stuff.

If Nintendo doesn't have an online network that's robust enough for FUT, they won't get it.
If Nintendo doesn't provide a good enough CPU to handle intense physics calculations, they won't get Infinity Engine running on it.

What's not to get?

Is this a joke post.

Ultimate Team is probably the most intense online mode with all the trading and microtransaction that goes on. I don't think there's any other game that is heavily networked like Ultimate Team.

It's like if Diablo 3 actually had no limit on items, that's FUT, except it won't crash.

I guess the issue is that EA handles all of the online stuff on their end for both the 360 and PS3, so the question is why would that be a Nintendo-related problem that they're not implementing it?

I just looked it up and it sounds like something I would never use and dont even care about.

I like what EA is doing with the controller, I know its not gonna have everything being a launch game on a new console but they have but some effort in the game.

It does have both, though.

I wonder if they'll strip down the Madden franchise again for the next Xbox and Playstation? EA's pretty shameless about this stuff, so I'm guessing yes.

So why is the WIi U version inferior? What is Infinity Engine?

ThE new features make it sound better... :/

Yea they are doing some nice stuff with the controller, we dont even know how good this new physics engine is but its not that big of a deal, people are acting like WiiU is getting Madden Wii HD which is not the case.

A game has to conform with Nintendo's online account and all these guidelines that Nintendo set out. They can't just run their own servers without logging into Nintendo's online whatever.

Especially with the microtransaction, the transaction has to be done through Nintendo's account.

They're gonna 3DS the WiiU?!? :O

Dreamcasting the WiiU was just the beginning...

Smh, if the Wii U cpu was weak than why is it getting games like Batman, Ass Creed, Mass Effect, Aliens etc with even better graphics?

Think about it for a second...

It does have both, though.

And you know this how?

Getting multiplat titles to run on the WiiU is considerably more complicated than many of you seem to think based on the conversations I've had over the last several months. The hardware has roots in some of the 360's architecture, but it's quite a bit different. And you're going to hear specific complaints about the system in the next several months if what we overheard at E3 is any indication.

As others have pointed out, the 360 version of Madden 06 was considered inferior to the PS2 version of the game. Tiburon is developing across a ton of platforms, and they have to prioritize. Why would they put priority on the new system with what will be the smallest install base and the most nebulous online infrastructure?

I saw ME3 on WiiU yesterday. It didn't look noticeably different from the 360 version of the game. And Batman actually looked worse at E3. You haven't seen most of these games, so making claims about them looking better seems premature.

There's been plenty of games on the Wii that do not use Nintendo's servers at all, including all of EA's. They actually don't even use friend codes.

Batman has better textures and AA than the PS3/360 versions.

Wii U Threads. Have to love them. They bring the stupid out of people.

It did not at E3. And it ran like crap.

It was actually much better but what was an issue which is an UE3 fault is texture pop in was not resolved. Once the textures popped the game looked fantastic

Xbox 360 version

Quote:
The Xbox 360 version had better graphics and an updated roster but lacked the features of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions. Players did have signature celebrations which were performed automatically such as Terrell Owens doing situps and Chad Johnson dancing. The player couldn't create any new players or edit attributes. The player could still trade and release players to free agency. The game still had franchise mode but it only had the NFL Draft and Free Agency portions in the off-season. The player could not change their franchise team unless they were fired as head coaches and the game's head coaches don't retire and if fired, go to other coaching positions. During games the player couldn't challenge plays or fumbles and there is a stoppage in play to introduce the player of the game and two-minute warning. Achievements were quite easy to earn for instance, getting a first down and entering the history book as well as activating a player card with the right stick were listed as achievements. The game engine of this game was retooled and later released as NCAA Football 07 and was the basis for the next two games on the next-gen console. The game also has an intro of Super Bowl XL, but as a rematch of Super Bowl XXXIX.[4]

Xbox 360
Electronic Arts developed a new sports engine for the Xbox 360-version of FIFA 07. This meant not only improved graphics and better controls, but the physics and control were also improved. The game collects more data from the matches than previous version, and thus is able to give a "man of the match" award. The commentary in English is provided by Martin Tyler and Andy Gray and the commentary in Mexican Spanish is provided by Enrique Bermúdez and Ricardo Peláez.
Extra features include up-to-the-minute real-world game results via real-time, weekly podcasts and news ticker, detailed football stats, information and real-world news available in five languages. Via Xbox Liharacters. Finally, the Xbox 360 version will offer a mini-game while the game loads, dropping the player in a one on one face off against the goalkeeper on a practice pitch. There is also very limited leagues on the Xbox 360 compared to the other consoles.[3]
EA cut all but seven leagues from the Xbox 360 version of the game - one of which contained only one team (Juventus). According to producer Jean-Charles Gaudechon, this is because the new game engine took so long to develop that EA was not able to implement everything.[4]

It's not about Nintendo or the Wii U, it's EA being EA.

So at E3 2011 when EA and a bunch of other developers were brought out on stage at the Nintendo show and talked about all the awesome support they're going to be giving the Wii U, they were just kidding? This smells like the Wii all over again. No thank you.
