Because of Asian markets, the sub numbers have become real murky.
But I realize I am not all that interested in talking about that here. As the market changes, sub numbers become less an indicator of the popularity or health of a game.
Not going to happen because of GW2 though. That's one of the big points of GW2's no subscription model, people don't have to sacrifice their WoW subscription in order to play. They can keep it and not feel guilty or like they're throwing away money on two subscriptions. So Anet isn't going up head to head against WoW.
I think differently, honestly. I don't think it will be a mass exodus from WoW but GW2 is a time-sink with so much to do in the game. Granted, there's no gear treadmill to stay competitive - but there's plenty of things to do in the game to keep busy and they are all fun.
I simply can't see people playing both and being able to stay competitive with all the grinding that needs to be done in WoW to stay competitive at a specific level. People are going to sacrifice one or the other and devote their time to that one MMO, IMO. Not all people, but a large majority will pick just one I think.
I caved. Haven't played any beta or watched a whole lot from the game but I'm ready to dive in. It seems like the kind of MMO you can play kind of in your own time and won't take up too much time.

They don't need to be competitive though, most people in WoW aren't. They log in, chat with friends, maybe herp derp through a daily with them then call it a day.
We're a different breed, most of us play games to try to be the best, or other specific goals. The average user of WoW isn't like that.
Hell me and all my buddies who do arena matches in WoW, will be going back for MoP, and we all fucking LOOOOOVE GW2 and cant wait to play it. Then there is all my friends (stupid friends ) who like to do all the raid garbage (see! stupid friends, heh), and they are looking forward to GW2, but will still be going back to WoW to play all the new content.
When one of them is free, its easy to still go and pay for the other one. Im sure once were done getting all the sweet new arena gear, playing with all the new abilities and the new class, and have got most of the new raids on farm or at least mostly completed, everyone will move over and focus more on GW2 again.
Obviously were just a small pool of people, but there is 14 of us who are all going to buy GW2, and ALL going to buy WoW, and I think all but 2 of us havent played WoW in quite a few months.
Still up in there air since we are trying to avoid big alliances and get on a server thats decently populated and good, but doesnt have a ton of queues for WvW. Apparently we will 'soon'
So we've reached the point in the thread where people legitimately believe this will have a significant impact on WoW's sub numbers? Same old MMO pre-release junk.

I never said gw2 would have an impact, although it will have a small one, people are just getting sick of wow is my point, and pandas wont stop that. There will be a big decline in subs a year from now in wow.

It has been repeated to death, IMO. However, I don't believe it will pull huge numbers away from WoW, instead I believe GW2 will be large on its own. The game is a different beast and I believe it will attract a different type of player. I think WoW will still be hugely successful, personally and there's nothing wrong with that. Every MMO player needs to have that one MMO that just clicks with them. I loved WoW for a long time for sure, but after a few BWEs and stress tests - GW2 clicks with my playstyle more. I like the lore, the art direction, the races, etc.
That being said we need a damned Souls game with proper co-op for a SP/MP RPG. Sure you can summon but that's just not fast enough
Very true but for those players wanting a "new" MMO - there's going to be some break point somewhere. Lots of people bought into SWTOR because they wanted different and were greeted with a wall of sadness. The gamers are trying new avenues - they just aren't as good as where they are at now, apparently.

Will it have an impact? Sure. Will it kill WoW? Not remotely. WoW will retain its top position without too much issue. But we finally have an MMO with a competent developer behind it that is genuinely good. So yeah, we'll see. If it doesn't impact WoW at all? That's fine. I'm not deeply invested in WoW being diminished.
Character creator would be amazing right now. The ability to go through and test all the different combinations/races would help the time pass for sure.
Have a truckload of games from the steam sale with no ambition to play any of them. I just want my Guild Wars 2 lol.
What is the Music folder for in "/Libraries/Documents/Guild Wars 2/"? It's just an empty folder - I assume it might be for additional bought DirectSong-like tracks to download/buy later?

More random questions: does blindness stop a stomp? I know you can stop one with daze (or more obvious stuff like stun/physics), but I wasn't sure if stomps counted as an attack for the blind condition.

Still trying to force myself on a media blackout/GW2 cooldown before the real adventure starts. I just hope the human starting event isnt as hectic/slowdown plagued as the first test day lol.

Probably not considering there will be 5 races to choose from rather than only 3 at that point. I would suggest though if you DO see a swarm of players, go in another direction.
Acting like fanboys would be saying GW2 will kill WoW for sure. Saying that GW2 is probably the first MMO to have a chance to take a bite off WoW? I don't think that's so crazy.
So we've reached the point in the thread where people legitimately believe this will have a significant impact on WoW's sub numbers? Same old MMO pre-release junk.
Yes, it seems we have. This is the first MMO I've played since WoW that I see as having the potential to make a significant niche for itself in the market.
I understand that much of the backlash against people with a modicum of faith in GW2's chances is coming from people who thought that of previous MMOs and got burned. I can understand and relate to that, honestly, but please also understand that, from my point of view, I've placed my faith after much care and consideration.
I for one have played the betas of anything from City of Heroes to Warhammer Online to Champions Online to The Old Republic to Tera (not an exhaustive list), but Guild Wars 2 is the first MMO ever since WoW that I've bought. Note that I paid for a WoW subscription for six years, so that's not a factor for me not switching to another sub-based MMO. I vote with my wallet; I think that this, at least, shows I have a completely different opinion of it than of previous MMOs. I truly and firmly believe it is completely different to anything that has come before it.
Of course it's an opinion like any other that you may or may not share (and this thread shows there's people enough from both camps), but more importantly, I also don't have a clue if this difference will translate into success in a WoW-dominated market. As I said, like in the OS market, the very nature of it (where using the same as everyone else is a huge advantage) makes it very difficult for massive shifts to happen. It's possible that GW2 will eke out a niche for itself, enough to survive (much like GW1 did), and WoW will not even notice. It's possible that it fails, since it's a much-higher budget game that probably needs more players to keep itself alive. It might also spread like wildfire thanks to word of mouth. I have no clue, and honestly, I don't think anyone else (not ArenaNet, not Blizzard, not analysts, and certainly not any of us) can know. Still, I would appreciate it if everyone respected everyone else's opinions and turned condescension down a few notches. Can we please just get along?
Dynamic Event outcomes can alter the world and what you have access to in the world. The changes are not permanent though. If bandits take an outpost, it is not lost forever. You can retake the outpost. Bandits or Centaurs or whatever will attack it again and you may lose the outpost.
Seems reasonable. I actually really like how these "dynamic events" embed the quests in a believable context. Taking over a bandit camp or defending a conquered outpost makes way more sense than the usual MMORPG fetch-/kill quests I'm accustomed to.
With regards to the personal story quests, I'm still unsure on whether they are well written and varied in their design. Generally, GW2 seems to have a very light-hearted tone, though, which I really appreciate.
Combat doesn't feature any block or dodge %. Instead, defense most be proactive or reactive. By that I mean that if you see a big hit coming, you have to dodge or use a block skill or evade skill. You can also blind your target to make them miss their next attack or you can stun the target to disable them.
As for combat, I think its an improvement, but if you are looking for demon souls level, youll be dissapointed. Still, you need to pay attention, and actively dodge attacks. You dont just sit there and do your rotation. You need to dodge, blind, protect, heal, to avoid or mitigate incoming damage because mobs in this game can kill you, especially later on. You arent really going to face-roll this, especially since you are down-leveled (also another good thing because if you are level 20 and want to play with a level 2 friend, you can, and still get rewards and experience for your level). Oh, and there are block skills that have to be triggered manually to avoid the attack. Its simply not equiping a shield and getting some 'block' mitigation bonus
This sounds good. I can see this working quite well as long as relatively few players are involved in combat, but in large-scale battles, as in the Super Squad / Team Paradigm match mentioned by Vinci, which I just watched, the high amount of particle effects from magic spells (?) seems to make it quite hard to keep an eye out for specific attack-animations of a given enemy-combatant. Since I've never played the game, I don't know if this is actually a problem, though. Is it?
Well, I think the main improvements of other MMOs is that GW2 gives you a much better desire to explore, a sense of wanderlust. I believe this is helped by the beauty of the world, secrets hidden away in nooks and crannies, and probably most importantly is that there are no real 'quest hubs'. Meaning that you dont go to some little town, pick up a ton of quests, do them and come back.
I totally get what you mean! I've seen a lot of concept art of GW2 and I absolutely adore it. It's actually the reason I originally got interested in the game. The sense of scale is breath-taking and certainly invites exploration.
The siege battles you described sound really epic, by the way. Man, maybe I should just try the game out for myself. I usually don't buy games at near full-price ($50 in this case) when I'm not sure on whether I will actually enjoy the mechanics behind it, but GW2 doesn't leave me much of a choice, I guess.
Just came back from playing the The Secret World beta. I want to like that game, I really do, but it's made so many terrible choices with gameplay... There's no chance of it becoming anything else than another corpse littered in WoW's wake.

That's exactly it. Event chains branch depending on if you succeed or not (for example, defending the outpost). Also, changes to the world are actually more interesting than "a few enemy NPCs spawn", actually. Bridges and observation towers get destroyed, NPCs (including vendors) are forced to relocate, etc.

Personal stories are quite more serious than the rest, although it depends on the race. In some, you have to make some hard choices, like
saving an hospital or an orphanage from being burned, or in another case, saving a friend or preventing your home part of the city from being poisoned
. These changes reflect in a largish portion of your home city that is instanced, but you can invite people there.

It's been toned down ever since the first betas, resulting in both improved framerate and less confusing battles, but when 30-50 players go for a monster truck pileup, things are going to get hectic no matter how you slice it.

I'm sure by now you've seen plenty of screenshots and discovered that the extraordinary bit is that the game looks every bit as beautiful as the artwork, right? If not, you have an endless supply of pics here: http://fiontar2008.minus.com/

It's a Mesmer, although armor is not class-exclusive. Also remember you can dye different parts of each piece of armor; dyes are unlocked per-character and can be applied as many times as you want. http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/34310-dye-colours-preview-image-heavy/
I personally think that armor looks ugly in those colors. Much more beautiful stuff in here, check this out (this is the preview default armor when creating a character, but again, all casters can wear light armor, etc): http://medias.jeuxonline.info/guildwars2/equipe/136830/preset.jpg
Can someone point out the skills/build site? I've only been able to try pistol/pistol and rifle Engineer. Want to mess around with other weapons the Engi has access to, especially shield, but I have no idea what shield brings to the Engi.

TSW (to me) feels, acts, and almost looks identical to Hellgate London, with a tad better graphics. Hellgate London was "ok" when it came out, but my god.....for 2012, it's just so dated.
Green Man Gaming offers 15% off Guild Wars 2 with the following code: ROLLF-OR1D6-DMAGE
That does it, I can't resist any longer! I'm getting 3 copies for the family

I know when the TRUE "successor" of WoW appears: it is going to be when I open a thread about the game on NeoGaf and I wont see people eagerly awaiting the Blizzard product that is running paralell to game xy to fail and to "finally die". That is all it needs to take. If you still have a need to compare everything your game does to what World of Warcraft does, you do not have something that can stand up to it, simple as that. (Same goes for other games vs Diablo III, but I do not want to stir that one up , so )
Edit: To clarify, same will apply to stuff like Titan, whenever that finally gets announced. And I am afraid Blizzard does not know what to do with that one either, in terms of WHEN to release it, when to announce it, etc.
I really can't explain it. Just everything about TSW felt exactly like Hellgate London did. Skills, layout of maps, mobs, feel of the world. The only differing factor was the story. It just felt like a very dated MMO.
