Multiple people shot at Wisconsin Sikh temple

My dad's friend's wife is trapped inside and said that the gunmen is standing by. I guess this is now a hostage situation. But I'm not completely sure.

Definition:

Common definitions of terrorism refer only to those violent acts which are intended to create fear (terror), are perpetrated for a religious, political or, ideological goal; and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants (civilians).

I stand corrected.

I never knew of it because I never saw many growing up and I have never taken a religion class. I don't know much about any religion, really. Never really been interested in them.
A survey class on religions would be a good thing. Prominent atheist Daniel Dennett has proposed this. No indoctrination, just a summary of the different religions, their origins, their basic tenets, their history, etc.

How could this not be about religion? It's an attack on a temple during a time of worship.

Sorry, I forgot to add that I do believe it was the reason. But you should know very well how people get touchy on those type of subjects. There will be tons of people who would reckon that it could've been random attack, no matter how much proof you might have against that suggestion.

Emotion is natural. You can't "ban" it, and it's stupid to even think about that idea.
I think they were taking some kind of meds for that in the movie, idea was idiotic nonetheless. Also I really hope there won't be many victims, it's horrible how many mass shootings we have had this year alone :(

3 for 3.

That definition could apply to any crime done with intent. The truth of the matter is there is no internationally agreed upon definition

Telling brown people in America they aren't welcome isn't a political motivation?

You have no idea what the shooter's reasons are. Timothy McVeigh was white and also labeled a terrorist. Let's stop this stupidity of what to call a shooter.

The guy being interviewed on CNN said it was a very well coordinated shooting, with multiple shooters. Fuck.

I'm sure he chose a Sikh temple in Wisconsin for reasons other than race, religion, culture. I'm pretty certain he thought he was going after Muslim people because there is literally no reason to target Sikh people.

Sounds like the officer that arrived first got into a gun fight with the suspect. He was shot multiple times, but also took down that suspect. The officer is expected to survive. Now they don't know if there are more suspects, so they're going through and helping people as they go and cautiously making sure there are no more suspects.

I have a fondness for Sikhism, has some of the best commandments in a religion. Namely:

Non-family-oriented living: A Sikh is encouraged not to live as a recluse, beggar, yogi, monastic (monk/nun) or celibate.

Priestly class: Sikhism does not have priests, they were abolished by Guru Gobind Singh (the 10th Guru of Sikhism).[6] The only position he left was a Granthi to look after the Guru Granth Sahib, any Sikh is free to become Granthi or read from the Guru Granth Sahib.

Blind spirituality: Superstitions and rituals should not be observed or followed, including pilgrimages, fasting and ritual purification; circumcision; idols, grave worship; compulsory wearing of the veil for women; etc.

I mean that is some awesomeness compared to many other religions.

FOX 6 has been doing well with not revealing what the cops are doing whereas CNN is flying over. I saw 2 bodies on their stream in the parking lot. I feel like the shooter is still alive, they usually have no problem saying if the suspect was killed.

Big six? In the United States, we tend to focus on the Big 3.
Yeah, if it's not Christianity/Islam/Judaism, or Buddhism to a smaller degree, it's not something you learn much about.

For a country as large and with as many immigrants as America, that's appalling. You learn about the big six religions from primary (elementary?) school in the UK. My schools ran events and projects for the various holidays of different religions.

Yeah, Sikhism is the bomb.

"You should only pray towards Mecca!"
"But... surely God is everywhere?"

Are there multiple shooters?

Updated at 2:12 p.m. ET: At least four people, including a suspected gunman and a police officer, were shot Sunday morning at a Sikh temple outside of Milwaukee, local media and law enforcement reported.

How are you sure? Why not let it play out first and then speak about it intelligently?

Wow man hope everyone gets out ok obviously, crazy that you got inside info like that.

That's likely because of the large amount of Indian immigrants in the UK, no? I learned (briefly) about Confuscionism/Hinduism/Shinto/Daoism in school (world history) but we never touched on Sikhism.

Same here. We have a large Indo-Canadian/Sikh population in Surrey and Vancouver, but we learned a lot about the Big 6 in Elementary school. Even had an awesome field trip where we went to the places of worship for all of the religions

Some people have been evacuated...not sure how they managed to get out. btw, Fox News is doing so much better job at reporting this news. CNN is flying a stupid helicopter with analysts talking, while FN reporters are on ground interviewing victims' relatives.

I'm sure they are reporters from FOX News affiliate stations, which CNN doesn't have.

What if the armed person was a card carrying NRA member with a permit to conceal trying to stop the shooter? How would SWAT be able to tell it's the shooter or a citizen trying to help?

A chance you take when you choose to carry a weapon. I defer to SWAT officer judgment here. They are not hotheads.

What's the over/under of assault weapons being used?

According to Gun-GAF, there's no such thing for civilian use. So far, all we've heard about are handguns, and they are plenty deadly on their own. I'm a liberal, but pretty neutral on guns, and I wish pro-gunners would inform and embrace regulations that prevent or mitigate these horrible events. Or, if that is impossible, simply acknowledge that.

I am both amazed with tendency to avoid calling those people terrorists as well as with not knowing about Sikh.

EuroGAF here.

My condolances to all people involved in this tragical event.

If there were multiple shooters that planned this attack that indicates to me that these people probably knew what a Sikh temple was and knew that they were not Muslim, but you can never be sure. Sikhs have been the victims of a lot of crime in recent years.

Labeled a terrorist before 9/11. Care to point to such a heinous crime in America that was labeled a terrorist since 9/11?

For fucks sake. Breivik's attacks in Norway were just called that! "2011 Norway Attacks."

Not referred to as a terrorist. Just look up any article from Jun 22, 2011.

Yes, the anthrax attacks are labeled as domestic terrorism. Any more questions?

I disregard all religions equally. Now that the bullshit is out of the way, i can care just about the PEOPLE, so this is pretty terrible.
