Multiple people shot at Wisconsin Sikh temple

Hope each shooter is "put down." Glad that the Officer is OK. Such a shame that something like this happened at all, let alone at a place where these people probably felt the safest.

They really shouldn't cover this stuff. It should be announced and that's it. Stop giving attention to these assholes who decide to go kill people.

People maybe confusing the other gunmen with SWAT teams. So it maybe why some may be saying multiple gunmen.

B/c someone whose mother is inside is saying that she heard tear gas and assault weapons.

Victims in Sikh Temple asking: Do NOT call cellphones, they are currently in hiding and ringer may give up their positions. #TempleShooting

Maybe they don't all know how to turn off their ringers.

I'm actually amazed at people not knowing about Sikhism. It's like not knowing about Buddhism. It's one of the Big Six religions.

The shooter is a probably a Sikh.

I work with a Sikh, who lives in a community full of Sikhs (Brampton), an he says religious disputes at temples can occasionally get fairly heated. Every year or two around there someone goes absolutely nuts at a temple and stabs a bunch of people.

Well, we'll have to wait and see about this. The only info we have now is that the guy is bald and white. Those two descriptors don't match up with a the typical description of a Sikh male (of course, that's just my guess).

Big six? In the United States, we tend to focus on the Big 3.

There have been some tragic shootings this year, not just in the US. I just feel sorry for everyone involved, including these shooters. What a waste of life.

I was watching Equilibrium last night. For those who haven't seen it before, the pretext is that human nature is prone to destructive, war-like, tribal nature that will ultimately consume itself. In response to this, they banned emotion. The result was a world without war or violence, no murders etc but they also lost passion, creativity and spirit; all that makes us human. For years now I've been trying to decide whether I would be for that or against it.

...that's where I live.

Somehow I doubt the first thing someone does when running from a shooter is turn off their cellphone.

True. I'd like to think that one of the first things I'd so when hiding is to turn off anything that might give away my position, but who knows what they'd do for certain in that scenario?

I never knew of it because I never saw many growing up and I have never taken a religion class. I don't know much about any religion, really. Never really been interested in them.

So that guy they just interviewed on CNN just said they were white. Confirmed via phone by someone inside the temple.

And don't actually know anything about them. Most people can maybe tell you about Christianity, but they don't know much about Judaism or Islam even if they know that Jews and Muslims exist.

While we don't know if the reasons the shooter did so was due to religion's sack (that and most likely miss taking him for a Muslim, this sort of reminds me back in the high school days when we had outsiders trying to attack one of the Sikhs in our group because they mistook him for a Muslim). This happened not to long after the 9/11 event.

Emotion is natural. You can't "ban" it, and it's stupid to even think about that idea.

How could this not be about religion? It's an attack on a temple during a time of worship.

The definition of terrorism implies political motivations.

Telling brown people in America they aren't welcome isn't a political motivation?

There are multiple instances of Sikh people being targeted after 9/11. Including people being shot.

CNN says shooters are white.

Stop calling them Gunmen. These are TERRORISTS.
I disagree- I thought the people trying to call the Ft Hood incident an act of terrorism were also wrong to do so. The motivation may be related, but a shooting spree is very different from trying to inflict mass casualties or infrastructure damage.

Are mass shootings at a McDonald's about fast food? I'm not saying that you're wrong, there's just nothing to be gained by jumping to conclusions unless you're one of those people that has to say "Yep, religious reason. I called it. Suck on that losers!"

The definition of terrorism implies political motivations.
Definition:

Common definitions of terrorism refer only to those violent acts which are intended to create fear (terror), are perpetrated for a religious, political or, ideological goal; and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants (civilians).

3 for 3.

I wish people would stop throwing that word around. One of the worst trends to come of the W. Bush era.

Not worth arguing about really. It feels petty to argue about it in this thread anyways.
