I want to give Dark Souls one last shot. Help me.

This thread shows one of the factors that is usually missed when discussing why the Souls games are so incredible. It brings people together to help each other in ways very few other games can. When those streams of the Japanese version of Dark Souls were on, the whole world was watching and cooperating. I love that.

Exactly. I just love reading everyone's experiences because they differ so much. It truly is a game where information is power.

Great stuff, dude. Thanks! Yeah, I am curious to try out some other weapons. I have both the Estoc and the Rapier. They are awesome to use and I'm a massive fan of quick swords like that, but I'm scared that I'll miss the uber damage of the Claymore too much. Are they worth getting into? Are there any other rapier-like swords that I should be looking out for?

Nothing special comes to mind but you can customize any weapon to have a special element thanks to the customization system in the game. I think I went from sword, to spear, and back to sword (curved) again once I got the Quelaag's Furysword.

this thread is gonna get over 1k replies, I know it. Dark Souls is just too good.

Ricard's Rapier comes later on.

That said Rapier is the single best backstabbing weapon in the game, and the Estoc is close with the higher base damage, better moveset, and range. Estoc is a great weapon.

Ricard's Rapier and the Balder Side Sword are two weapons you should be looking out for. One of them is in a chest and the other is a rare but farmable drop.

With my characters I've had lots of fun with Claw, Uchigatana, Zweihander, Great Scythe, Partizan, Black Knight Greatsword, Ricard's Rapier, Balder Side Sword and various bows, plus the awesome Avelyn shotgun crossbow. No shortage of interesting weapons to choose from. Currently trying various halberds on a new character and my new character in the expansion will use Washing Pole.

Dual cestus is the way to go. Offhand jab is surprisingly good. Ownining a ganker with that was hilarious.

Gotta go elemental for those though, FIRE AND LIGHTNING.

I was also fond of two-handing a bonewheel shield.

Ha. I think it does? I swear my shoulder plates got larger and my helmet, more ornate, but I dunno, man. You've put doubt into my head now. Maybe I'm projecting the sexiness onto it through overwhelming pride :)
Then who am I to say it's not actually happening? Play on, sir :)

This thread will get over 1000 replies because you know people are gonna see you through to the end of this, even if they have to drag you kicking and screaming. Maybe it's your charming rhetoric, or your refined 'tache... or maybe like others have said, this is one of the best damn communities there is.

And can I just say: 2AdEPT, you sure are knowledgeable, but man the sight of your posts cracks me up. It's like a perfect stream of consciousness - Dark Souls style!

Edit: Oh wow, and I will also say bravo to fire and lightning Cestus (... Cestuses?... Cesti?) What a cool idea.

Where should I head after moonlight butterfly? Im at a soul level of 32. I rang the first bell as well. Should I try to farm the butterfly with others tomorrow? What soul level did people usually finish their first run through around?

People very rarely coop for butterfly since you can go there at any level. Just grab Beatrice, learn to roll and you can't lose. At that level you can move on to Lower Undead Burg. Enjoy.

if you like rapiers there is the rickard's rapier which you will come accross a bit later after ringing both bells but in rder to get these to their max potential you may want to choose dex over strength....you cuyld actualy do both but reallly you ca't go wrong with that washing pole ... it has a runnign stab attack that reaches form one end of the widescreen to the other!!! like I said...there is nothing stopping you from keeping your claymore goign as your primary weapon...but start covering your options...it may not bethe best weapon or even a vaible weapon in all situaitons depending also on yourbuffs.

For instance your estoc does a littel lower damge than most swords, but it acts like a spear in that you can hold your sheild up and stab with it at the same time...there are points inthe game where thisis not only valuable ...it is near necessary!!!!

You can go with yourclaymore as your default, but when you run up agaisnt a hard spot...you may have to get creative.....and your creativityand optins will be limited without a coupe extra pieces.

here is a list of the weapos I normally carry for differetn situations...you can mix and match the buffs or upgrade paths but i will give you my choices regardless:

lightning spear +4
chaos great scythe +5
wahing pole +15 - STR requirement is 20 to onehand but depending onmy character I usually just two hand it with 16 or 18 ,,,can't remember which.
fire gargoyles halberd or justplain +14 or 15
astora sword or occult club (downgraded to divine for the skellies) minimal upgrades for these two and one only one of the two at that.
jagged ghost blade +5 - it is just too cool to try to find a time where you can do a quick double combo of 2 stabs, then FOUR more all at face level..any one I hate is goign to die with that blades moveset if at all possible.
demon's spear +5 - the R2can knockdown enemies and you "duck" when you thrust...can actually dodge enemy swings with this move and retailiate similateously....ssoooooo fun.

a lot of poeple lke the balder side sword but it is a relatively rare drop and I don't seem to be luckty enough to get it when I want it.

if you max strength (36 is enough to two hand) then get a great club, dragon's great axe etc. or considerteh black night greatsword or great axe.

sorcerers or those with high intelligence will inevitably covet teh moolight greatsword (teh signature sword of the developers ....its in all their games of this type...and there is even reference to it in armoured core 5

you'll notice eventauly that I did not max out certian weapons like the lightning spear.....you only get 2 maybe 3 if lucky slabs per playthrough which is the stone needed to max regualr and lightning....so choose which weapons you wnat to max carefully.

I loved.my dark souls character. level 650 or so pyro with a magic halbered +10 rocking havels shield and fully armour set. the halbered is such a great weapon that.no one really.goes.for.

The Moonlight laser blade has actually been around since the original Armored Core, dunno if it goes back further. I never made that connection, assuming it's not just a coincidence. Nice.

despite that Idid not play the ohter games much(besides demon's of course) other posters have said similar things along these lines and sounded like they knew it was not coincidence....a running brand stamp if you will. I checked myself by googlilng it and there is a "moonlight package" in AC5, so if it goes back to 1 I say it is not a coincidence....i could be wrong but I belive it was a partof the kings field series as well?

edit:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD8pzS_a_d0

even kept the same structure for demon's...... easily my favourite sword in demon;s...in particular how you acquire it........I remember helping a noob out on 5.2 abd he was ready to rage quit...so i invited him into my game and took him on a tour....I kinda pretended I didn't know where I was goign and we "stumbled" onthe nest of slugs....I didn't tell him I already had a copy of the sword as I believe I was inNG+ so when it was shining down there after all was cleared..I let him take it....turned his experience around....ah the memories...sniff sniff.

+1 for the gargoyle's halberd, loved the run I did with that weapon, takes some getting used to but the odd rhythm and immense reach makes it a good un. Takes some pvp'ers by surprise as well. Loved getting surrounded by a mob and cracking out the R2 attack, so badass. Helped dozens of players take down O&S with the gargoyle's halberd.

Its like how Demons Souls had a sword from Kings Field in it. Was one of the final swords in that game. I remember it quite well, since went around wiping out monsters and villagers alike with it lol

2AdEPT, you are a legend. Ha. It's exactly as B-Genius put it: you just spew forth supreme knowledge as if you're speaking in tongues. Many, many thanks (and that goes out to everyone, too).

Wow. I had a very interesting Dark Souls session tonight. I did some things, guys; things that I'm not too proud of. Ugh. How do I put this? I farmed. I farmed BAD. I'm talking cows and chickens and poo-drenched pigs. It was the exploit beyond the locked Artorias Crest door that got me. I couldn't resist. One thing led to another. I googled whether I should even buy the crest and before you know it - BAM... YouTube vids. I needed those souls, man!

I also figured that I should just get that DWGR for the heck of it, too. So, yeah... Long story short, I feel like I've broken the game a little. I mean, I spent a good hour doing fucking cartwheels in a full suit of armor and inviting my mortal enemies to boop me on the head to their demise. It was ridiculous. Also, I only realized after the fact that the guy I killed will now not appear in Blighttown as a merchant. Have I made a grave mistake?

I'm guessing that I'll be begging for millions of souls and the ability to perma-cartwheel later, but right now, I feel like some sort of god in shining armor. I guess I could just stop wearing the ring, but hey, running fast is good!

Anyway, what's done is done. I understand if I've lost your respect. I'll cartwheel out of here (fat fucking chance! I need you guys/this thread something chronic).

P.S. My god. Those little mushroom fellas that run towards you and fall. I lol'd. I don't know. I don't even want to know. Comedy gold.

EDIT: I should probably list the weapons of note that I have (from memory, so apologies for any omissions):

- Balder Side Sword
- Black Knight Halberd
- Gargoyle Tail Axe
- Murakumo
- Zweihander
- Astora Straight Sword

Nah don't feel bad for farming those guys on your first playthrough. And DWGR is worth the merchant not being in blighttown. You won't be able to accomplish everything you want to on one playthrough.
Of those weapons I'm a fan of the balder side sword and black knight halberd. I know a lot of people love the Zwei but I've never used it much myself, and Murakamo is semi-popular in PVP. All viable weapons.

Y'all should go to the OT in the community forum sometime

I used a halberd in Demon's Souls and one in Dark Souls as well. I never really use any other weapon. The halberd has great range which I like and the alt is a straight spear attack which is really useful.

Was this written on an iPhone or something? Sorry, but reading it with full-stops and all is pretty entertaining :D

But seriously, props for level 650!

*whispers to OP* He's craaaazy.

^^^^^^^this is a decent list...good work....now just decide how you wnat to upgrade each, or whihc buffs you would like to apply.

Yes I apologize....it seems I better be more selective with my data dumps...but like you I am a perfectionist at heart which means I have let go of certian neuroticisms like proper spelling and grammar. I "junk out" on games, run up to 10k a day, finsihed a masters in health promotion (which DID require ...and as such burnt out on: proper grammar and spelling), worked in a forensic (means correctional) mental health hospital, and rock in various bands....still find time ot be a dad etc. Although my handle refers to being skilled at a lot of things but a masterof none, I am thinking of changing my handle to Erikstotle...nickname from Gr. 10 sceince where I actually answered the questions the teacher askedthe class. seriously.....is it time for a changeof handle? I don't think anyone gets it, but isthat a good thing?

Anyway, you missed a shop where you could buy a long list of weapons that you can get other ways...mostly random drops....EXCEPT for the washing pole...its only available there. It is one of my favourites, but you seem immersed enough to prolly do a couple playthroughs as you will want to try the ranged magic attcks of sorcery or faith....there is just something about being able to throw lightning bolts that hints at Godliness. Combined with Logan's robe, gold hemmed hoodie, DWGR, high metachlorians (FAITH in DS) Emit Force, washing pole, and darkmoon blade you might as well be anakin fuckin skywalker. I find it hilarious that FROM has done a better job of giving all the parts to a Star Wars toon better than the games of the copyrighted trademark.

Balder Side Sword is excellent.

But dammit, you got the Black Knight Halberd! I was trying to get that for my new character but the bastard refused to drop it and I can't be bothered to farm humanity for 2 hours on a new NG.

So, my Divine Claymore... What say you, Gaf? Shouls I pump some souls into Faith (souls that I don't currently have) or should I just undo the divinity and pump my souls into END/STR/DEX as I have been doing?

You should take that divine weapon into the Catacombs. Most people wait far too long before they go into that dungeon, making it too easy and boring. But if you have a decent divine weapon (and actually even if you don't) you have a pretty good chance of tackling that dungeon early on. The reward you get for clearing the dungeon is awesome to get early on, especially if you have humanity to spare.

Oh, and if anyone asks if you are a cleric, tell him no!

I had a difficuly time once with the moonlight butterfly, and I managed to defeat it by summoning Beatrice, and then equipping the stone shield. I camped near the far end of the bridge, and slowly heaved that thing in front of me when I saw the shot coming. I just waited for it to land, and wreaked havoc on it's face until it was dead.

Hmm. I'm waning, guys. The Catacombs. The Monday-to-Friday Catacombs. They're that shit and boring. I lost 15 Humanity + 20,000 souls because I forgot that I died and I went exploring and fell off a ledge. Yes, my fault completely, but fuck me, this place just sucks; I barely know how to get out and I really don't feel like playing. I think it's time for a decent break.

While there are some good rewards in Catacombs, you don't need to be there yet. I'd suggest getting out and moving on with the main track. You haven't been to Lower Undead Burg/Depths/Blighttown yet?

Yeah, definitely head for the lower Undead Burg and the Depths next instead of the Catacombs. You get there by using the key you gained after killing the gargoyles to open the door of the tower at the beginning of the bridge with the dragon.

You're there way too early. Its probably too hard to make decent, consistent progress down there at your level.

Haha going for the catacombs? Not a smart idea I kept that as one of the few places I'd visit last.

If you are not enjoying the Catacombs, you should get out. But I maintain that most people do that area too late in the game, so that it stops being challenging. Especially the boss is a cakewalk if you wait too long. And it is definitely doable at your stage. I did it directly after beating the Gargoyles and without a divine weapon (which is way harder).

But if you are not a masochist, like me, I can understand why you wouldn't like it.

After hearing so much about e Capra Demon I thought he was a walk in the park! Now I'm not too sure where to head. How do you get a divine weapon. Some guy in the woods gave me a titanite catcher. Not sure if it's such a good weapon. I also upgraded a halbred to +5.

You're probably talking about
Pinwheel
but I agree. I steamed through Catacombs and
made it to the Tomb of Giants and basically just tanked everything Gravelord Nito threw at me.
Felt like such a God at that point. Wish I had done it earlier.

STOP! I'm playing Demons Souls right now, don't let me sucked back into Dark Souls!

Having just bought a ps3 a couple weeks ago, I've been playing this... Had been intrigued since reading about Demon's Souls when it first came out. Oh my god, I see what everyone meant. Dark Souls is one of the utter best games I've ever played.

Man there sounds like there's so much...stuff..in it. Reading this thread I see talk of so many things I have no clue about :) (not reading guides etc, just experimenting and enjoying...i'm in no hurry). I'm a wanderer, level 22 so far..just reached the bell gargoyles tonight (and died right away and lost ~10,000 souls! got a feeling this will be the first time since the start i don't manage to recover those souls). I haven't upgraded any weapons or even changed my armour yet. Weapon of choice so far is a halberd. I don't know if this is good or bad, I've mostly been playing small 2D arcade games and old JRPGs for years, pretty new to modern games. I look forward to finding out about all the weird stuff in this one.

Anyway. Holy hell I love Dark Souls. I love how enemies which were terrifying and took ages to beat, I can now bash up in seconds- and how it's nothing to do with my character's stats having gone up. It's me who levelled up. I love how I just played for an hour before dying and losin' my souls yet I can't wait to jump back in, and don't feel grumpy about it at all. What a game <3

Okay, I literally just gave Demon's Souls a last shot just hours ago. I have both Souls games and I REALLY tried to get into them.

The games are stupidly broken: I don't have a problem with difficulty; I do however have a problem with designing annoyances for he sake of difficulty.
The souls games have horrid controls, Ninja Gaiden level of silliness excuses for 'difficulty' (re-spawning enemies and horrid backtracking).

If a game was difficult based on skills, then I am fine with it- I welcome it, even. But being 'difficult' by repetition and bad controls? Fuck that shit.

PS. I have the PS3 versions of these follwing games and I will trade them for almost ANY other games (if anyone is interested) because these games are appalling:

Dark Souls
Demon Souls
FF13

I couldnt, for the life of me, last more than a few hours playing any of these pieces of shit excuses for a 'game'.
PM me if you are interested (all US versions).

Sounds like you are just mad that aren't good at the game.

The combat mechanics in Dark Souls are some of the best this generation. Aside from the level that is literally pitch-black and the first mimic there is nothing unfair about the games.

I've been playing since November and there is still so much stuff I haven't tried and new things I'm discovering. Unbelievable game. The art design is so classy.

If you really want, the male merchant in the Undead Burg can be killed for a kickass katana, but it always makes me feel really guilty even if the dude's kind of a dick.

my first character was a thief/dex build type....I LOVED that katana, specially jacked up with lightning....so worth killing that annoying merchant. (though to be fair I did kill him way later on closer to the end of things so it was less of an issue killing the merchant.

So I decided to give the game one last shot.

I did get past my previous stopping point (sen's fortress) but now I'm at another (New Londo Ruins) at
four kings.
Since there is no bonfire there it makes things very difficult, but I did learn of a shortcut to four kings, so I will be trying that out.

Is playing as a sorcerer supposed to make the game really easy? I used a pyromancer when I played through the game, and it look me over forty hours with a very high amount of deaths to accomplish that feat. I convinced my brother to start playing the game a few days ago, and he's blasting through (just beat the fortress), killing everything extremely easily with long range magic. As far as I know, the only enemy that gave him any sort of trouble so far was the
Capra
Demon.

I guess close-range battles are much more dangerous in Dark Souls, especially in the first part of the game since the player most likely hasn't mastered the controls and hasn't learned to dodge/shield as much as they should.

Progress update:

I bailed on the 'Combs. Worst place in the universe. I actually ended up reaching the blacksmith with a lucky jump or two, but was soon after killed by those spinning douches. I miss him. He was adorable.

Lower Undead Burg and The Depths have been dealt with. The Gaping Dragon was semi-retarded, so I full-killed him and put him out of his misery. Seriously. What an incompetent boss.

Blighttown was explored, but I was honestly in tears every second I was down there, so I was looking for the exit as soon as I entered. How the fuck does one even design a place that bleak and oppressive? Yuck.

I got my Claymore up to +6. It is awesome, but I had a yearning for something faster, so I +5'd a Falchion, ended up not liking it, went back to Andre, +5'd the Murakumo (not fast at all, I know, but I think I'm a big "fuck off" sword kinda guy in the end)... And accidentally stabbed Andre in the face with a practice swing.

SUCCESS.

So, yeah. Now I'm soul-farming to eventually absolve my sins. Good work, me.

Oh! Oh! I was invaded! In the Darkroot Forest. He spent a good 2 minutes circle strafing me. I didn't even move. I was petrified. And then it began. A fight for the ages. Not really, though. He was horrid. I back-stabbed him twice with relative ease and cartwheeled triumphantly as his body slumped to the ground. A joyous occasion indeed. Well, until someone else invaded and obliterated me not 10 seconds later. 1 for 1 is pretty good, I say.

Darkroot Forest is great for Player vs Player once you unlock that door. Had a blast casting
chameleon
and sneaking up on people.

I second these sentiments. I was so dejected after that mishap in the Catacombs. I felt like my desire to play would lay dormant for days, if not weeks, but lo and behold, I went out to dinner and all I could think of on the way home was: "I really want to farm some large titanite shards". 2 hours later and the game and I are best buds again. It speaks volumes that a game can punish you with such gusto and still manage to keep you coming back for a few more lashings. Pure and realized core mechanics at their best.

valley of defilement in demons was way more depressing. But loot made that level so loveable.

I dunno. I just went through there in, maybe 1/2 hours. But I suppose my armour having decent poison res helped me quite a bit.

Blight Town on the other hand was a pain in the arse. A brittle framerate, constantly falling and getting poison sniped from a distance by those little fuckers... Man, that place was a pain.

So, B-town next? I'm game.

And I'm going to bring the Black Knight Halberd to the fore now. Very cool weapon. I think I only need a few more STR levels to wield it one-handed.
