I know. I was being sarcastic. Murder sucks...but RTR will bring some creature removal. No way in hell they let Murder and O-Ring be the only removal in STD.

...okay, now we're enemies.

Don't worry, you were already my enemy yesterday when I found out about your hidden cache of bonfires. ;)

I'm not sure why, it's just not fun to play or watch for me. But I also hate playing delver so meh. Like I said, I like the more weird decks the more I play, seems like there are more moves/possibilities to play rather than the same like 3 moves pounded into your head. Part of why I love pod so much, so many possibilities to change the game.

I have Divine Deflection in my G/W Human Path sideboard because someone told me it's a good sideboard card. I was kinda grasping for straws at that point, so I threw it in. But I really don't know when I should be playing it. Usually when I finish game one, I can look at my sideboard and be like:

Okay, this deck likes to be doing a lot of X. That means Y and Z in my deck aren't as effective as A and B would be in my sideboard.

But with Divine Deflection.. I don't really know when is a great time to play that. Damage based removal decks? (bonfire?)

Yep, and any other burn spells.

It works against pod too when they get their fatty on you and you... happen to leave up enough mana to deflect it all.

TBH, it's not a card your aggro deck works well with. In order to use it, you have to have mana open. In aggro decks, you're tapping out every turn to play stuff. A reactive card in aggro isn't going to work out very well.

Also, if you're leaving mana open in preparation for a bonfire, you're probably just going to time walk yourself 9/10 times. Divine Deflection is really hard to justify using, although as a combat trick it might have some merit.

I hate how much I go back and forth on deck construction. I ordered a bunch of cards last night and I feel like I won't even use half of them by the time I actually get them. :/

Zombie pod with mortarpod is super tricksy. I especially love my brew with Bump in the Night, because midrange and delver expect you to be locked down, then BAM. Suck my black burn spell, fucker.

Eh, especially with the wrong mana type it seems like you almost never get to pod. It just seems to be a zombie deck that just so happens to have pod in the deck.

Terminate, Lightning Helix, Wrath of God, Damnation, and Pyroclasm are all getting reprints in RtR.

Believe...

But seriously, RtR needs to bring some quality removal. Mutilate is fine in a shockland environment, but not ideal. Sadly, the two solid control guilds are being held for Gatecrash; hopefully Izzet can pick up the slack.

I already said I hate delver. I've played that deck like twice casually and hated every second of it. Just not a fun deck at all.

My current thing at home is to build ridiculously strong decks for the wife to play around with. UB Delver really is super stupid strong, if played right.

2nd best so far? Monogreen. Weird.

I'm not saying delver is bad, it's a super strong deck, I just have no enjoyment playing it, much like zombies.

I'm not sure why but if they actually reprint wrath of god it would just feel like it's a huge troll. Plus that has to fuck up modern no?

lol, true, true. I even tried a version of the UB Delver that got close to top 8 at a SCG a while ago.

It super sucked.

Haha, I figured as much. I would play U/G delver if I could.

I'm lazy tonight so I think I'm finally going to organize all my cards... Do you guys do by color and alphabetically? Or what do you do if you order them? I don't want to get too crazy.

I do by color, then separate into STD, soon to rotate out STD and Legacy/Vintage. I cut out extras outside of playsets.

Hmm, the cutting outside of a playset is a good idea. I'm separating pretty similar to you. One box is M12/M13, another is Scars, besieged, new phyrexia, and the final is innistrad, dark accension, and avacyn.

Edit: And I just realized Celetial purge and revoke existence will both be gone soon. No purge makes a sad Zaraki. :( :(

Edit: HOLY SHIT. Some of the innistrad lands are when it's all shitty and then it's the same picture but all nice looking in Avacyn? MY MIND IS BLOWN FRANK LEPORE

Yeah, the basics tell a story in Innistrad block. It's pretty cool.

I never paid enough attention, that's actually really awesome. I wish they did stuff like that more. It's like exactly the same art. Like the guy he was playing had one with a tree but it was all foggy and crappy and then one from avacyn that was the same exact tree and everything but no fog and the tree had leaves like it was autumn. Really cool transformation for the same art.

And the Zendikar and Mirrodin Besieged lands form a panorama.

Nice! I have to be a douche and layout my lands differently now. :P

Edit: I have to start reading those articles, I didn't notice the zenith's use the artifact lands for their background, cool stuff. I've played a lot with the artifact lands and never made a connection.

Is thrun a target for beast tracker? I can't find a ruling from my crappy googling search but someone yesterday said it was even though it doesn't have the hexproof keyword on it.

Edit: Ok, just found a board that said he was updated.

Need a bit of help with some mana curve stuff in my deck.

Right now it looks like this:

Creature (33)
1cc
4x Avacyn's Pilgrim
4x Champion of the Parish
2cc
4x Mayor of Avabruck
4x Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
1x Elite Inquisitor
1x Nearheath Pilgrim
3cc
3x Champion of Lambholt
3x Fiend Hunter
3x Silverblade Paladin
4cc
2x Hero of Bladehold
1x Odric, Master Tactician
5+cc
2x Sigarda, Host of Herons
1x Angel of Glory's Rise

Land (24)
3x Cavern of Souls
6x Forest
2x Gavony Township
5x Plains
4x Razorverge Thicket
4x Sunpetal Grove

Enchantment (3)
3x Descendants' Path

Sideboard (15)
2x Oblivion Ring
2x Celestial Purge
2x Ratchet Bomb
2x Nevermore
1x Witchbane Orb
2x Grafdigger's Cage
2x Nearheath Pilgrim
2x Riders of Gavony

--

This lands me at an AVG CMC of about 2.6 for my deck, which I think might be a bit too high? I'm not really sure.

But at the 2cc slot I'm really confused. I might want to get up to 12 cards at that slot, but Thalia and Mayor are the only two I'm sold on. Nearheath Pilgrim helps SLIGHTLY against decks like delver and other aggro decks, because it's a low priority target for removal and increases the longevity of my deck. But outside of that, it's ... meh. Elite Inquisitor helps with a few matchups, but it's just nice to have a 2/2 first strike vigilance dude out there swinging every turn. The problem with him is that he's two white, which can be expensive on early turns, since I typically do not want him as my turn 2 play.

I'm thinking about putting Hamlet Captain in there, and moving my Nearheath Pilgrim to the sideboard. Also thinking I might want another Silverblade Paladin, as he's often a game changer. I commonly board out the big Angel, so I might just put her in the sideboard permanently, or remove her altogether (although she has turned games around for me in the past :D )

Also, I want four Path's in there. FOUR DAMNIT. But again that raises my CMC :(

So, there are a lot of things I want to do, most of them increase my CMC, but I feel like it's already too high. What say you, magicgaf?

Ven, I got some pointers. Short version, if you don't want your 2cmc to drop turn 2, then cut him. Odric is useless in this deck and Hamlet Captain is a card I tried to make work so damn hard. He doesn't. Your mana curve seems fine, though I'd switch the plains and forests amount personally

You should consider Gather the Townsfolk in the 2cmc slot. Fantastic synergy with both Champions. I've also seen people run Loyal Cathar in the 2cmc slot, although being double-white might turn you off.

I would also highly consider Wolfir Silverheart; at least put him in the board to help you go over the top in creature mirrors.

A friend of mine and his girlfriend just recently started playing Magic a couple days ago. My friend and I use to play card games all the time in the late 90's to early 2000's. Mostly Yu Gi Oh, although I played a lot of Magic and started to drift more into that group at local meet ups. Anyway, my friend wants me to start playing again since "I actually use to play the game" and could show them how to play or rather play better. This is wonderful and all since I have been looking for another hobby/something else to do. It's just I play so long ago, I really only remember the basics on how to play and I assume the game has changed quite a bit over the years. I have been watching videos and reading about the newer sets/rules. It seems like the best case to start back up at this point would just be to buy an Intro Pack or something. Am I right by thinking this is the best way to start back? All my Magic card collection is super old and I have no idea how my decks would keep up against these newer sets (we have never played any strict format).

Ya, more or less. The OP has a nice explanation of the different things they have out. The intro decks are the cheapest way to get a 60 card deck but also obviously are also the weakest if you want to go play at Friday Night Magic or a tournament or something but they're the standard 60 card decks of whatever set you buy them from. Intro decks from the core set are always one color where as intro decks from other sets are usually 2 colors. If you want something cheap just to get the hang of it without having to try and construct your own deck they're definitely the best but there's other options. I bought two of them when my friend wanted to start learning for the first time and I was getting back into it to show her. They were only 50 cards back then but were still fun to play between friends.

shit worded it wrong

what's a tournament that i'm most likely to do well in even though im new to MTGO

Your best bet is a draft tournament. You will get destroyed in the standard/modern format tournaments because those rely on you having a pretty good deck.

In draft, everyone will choose their cards out of a pool of random cards. You still won't do well (since you won't know which cards are good), but you're more likely to win a draft than a standard tournament since money isn't a factor

Although one could argue that Standard might actually be easier if money is not an issue and you simply buy the strongest deck in the meta (hurr durr delvur) and learn to play that. Drafting requires you to have a very deep understanding of the mechanics of a given set, and the ability to build a deck on the fly. In some ways it's a lot more challenging than just piloting a strong deck every time.

Im not completely new to magic, just to MTGO, I was just wondering if there was a good way to practice against people of my caliber in a competitive sense, but im assuming way too many good people would join those to take advantage of da newbs

tried my hand at standard constructed and came close to winning in both my matches, they just got that christmas miracle card that completely pooped on my deck though

Then yeah, I think Standard is the way to go. Draft rooms are populated by draft monsters who draft 24/7, or so I hear.
