Serious question...

What's a weeaboo? Is it anime lover, Japan lover or an otaku? I see this being thrown out a lot. I have even seen neck beard type people called weeaboos.. And where did it originate from?

Weeaboo started as something random in the Perry Bible Fellowship comic.

The term was used as a word-filter on 4chan to censor people using the term "wapanese", which apparently is some sort of slur towards foreign, obsessive fans of Japanese culture/media. And so it's taken on the connotation of the word it was used to filter.

Lover of all things Japanese regardless of the actual quality.

Hence weeaboos will love P4A, but not all people who like it are necessarily weeaboos (since it seems good, but is hard to say because I am not permitted to play the fucking thing)

Most commonly used now to insult people who can find Japan on a map.

Wouldn't that just make you a Japanophile? I guess its just a negative term for that subculture.

I wonder if there are American equivalent of that although from my experience following anything American while in another country automatically makes you cool because of Hollywood.

I just find it funny that the original comic was mocking people who overuse bad catchphrases, and it turned into, well....

Anyways I just woke up from a rest, about to head out to the marathon.

Actually hating on anything American is probably much more the way to go (post gwb)

Dacidbro just likes playing Japanese fighting games. You are never going to hear him say that Japan has a chance against America in Marvel, in fact he fully stated that it's America's game. By definition a weeaboo would find a way to argue that because Japanese players are godlike.

He's 90% weaboo there happy? Plus him talking about Marvel isn't anything like him talking about Blazblu his real passion.

Does he insist on using the Japanese voices?

It's like, I'm just sitting here watching Ultrachen's Persona 101 episode, and all I can wonder to myself is how the hell is Virtua Fighter perceived to be an overly complex game when it only has 3 buttons, no meter besides life bars, and pretty lenient bufferring and execution for a lot of the characters.
Because some of the players seek to make themselves feel special by announcing to the world that VF is one of the most complex and deep pieces of software ever made.

People in this genre tend to do this with everything from Vampire Savior to Tekken and it ends up biting them in the ass because people become intimidated. Anime games are just pressing buttons. It's not that bad.
That's all games with an air dash. That's why street fighter is so viewer friendly.
Until they get it in their hands, can't combo anything because they don't know about links(much less one and two framers) and they can't understand why they can't roll, air block and why SRK's/Lariats keep fucking them up.

It's all daunting because fighters do a terrible job of teaching(especially Capcom fighters).

Weaboos have been around since the early days of the net. It's probably one of most enduring memes thus far. It's mostly being a Japan lover that finds their country and culture to be superior to their own or any other. Most of them do love anime and many of them are big old manchildren. The usual culprits are teenagers, but you see a lot of old weaboos out there too. I really like anime, but I recognize that Japan is a mess culturally and you'll probably find many people who share my view. I think their numbers have probably gone down since the early days of the net. There might be more Koreboos now, who knows...

I still really dislike the term weeaboo. It's always sounded like a slur in it's own way and still does to me TBH. It's built it's own connotation to me, the same as the word it was trying to replace I guess.

I'm not a fan either because in pretty much every case, it's being used as a slur. I can't think of a case where I've ever seen it used positively or even neutrally. Even when people use it as a joke among friends, it's one of those "playful" negative remarks that people know not to take too seriously because they should be familiar enough with each other. For the most part, though, I only see it being used as part of inflammatory or provocative language.

I'm there, esp since MLG isn't having VF.

Might be the best VF tourney this year outside of Evo.

watch me get bodied on stream

Mihe and heartnana are the only weaboos ive seen

Lord Knight smashes them both in the weaboo tier list

Combofiend leaving Complexity

Eventhubs said:
Today we are sad to announce that our good friend and fighting game community legend Peter "Combofiend" Rosas will be leaving our gaming family to pursue other ambitions in life.

Peter had the following to say, "It is with mixed emotions that I announce my resignation from compLexity. I've had a fantastic year with a fantastic company and am saddened that I am leaving but am looking forward to what the future holds. Thank you compLexity and its sponsors for all their support and I wish the company and players nothing but the best."

I love the term. It's the perfect way to see who is a dork but doesn't realize that he is. A normal person wouldn't have even heard of the term and even after they hear the word they wouldn't bother adding it to their vocabulary.

The nerd hierarchy chart needs to add a new slot for users of that term. Like they're not at the bottom of the sea, but they've left shallow water.
