Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Damn. I was at the very least hoping for a mobile authenticator.

It doesn't mean they won't have their own. It means either they'll launch the mobile API to the community and then finish their own apps or they won't have their own. I can't see them not having their own because that would mean that we'd never get the guild chat, map interaction stuff, character browser, or trading post stuff. I'm going to guess they're going to use the API key system that EVE does to some extent. I'm expecting at the very least that the community will design mobile databases and skill calculators or something.

If they do have their own I'm not sure if it'll be for awhile. At the very least they must get an authenticator out for Android and iPhone ASAP.

There was a thread on reddit just today asking about it here.

Turns out, the guy that wrote that blog post on the app in 2010 doesn't even work at ANet anymore. Hopefully we hear something about it after launch. I was really excited about it.

I'm kind of surprised at the Humans ranking so high.

hm, this chart is not quite in line with the other poll result I previously posted

Interesting thing about that chart: the data was pulled on April 8th, before any of us had even played the game.

if that's the case, that might explain it. In the other charts, the percentage of Human characters is lower and the Azura are the second most popular race by a wide margin

I would pay good money for a phone app that:
- Acted as an authenticator.
- Let me access the trading post from anywhere.
- Gave my mobile device 12 or so "mobile" slots to store extra items.

How good is arenanet about balancing? Was Guild Wars fairly balanced? In WoW I pvped 90% of the time and it was frustrating to see a particular class or build run rampant and shit all over everything for months at a time.

Guild Wars had far better balance than WoW ever has had. ANet had constant balance fixes. At a certain point, they went overboard with balancing, but their ability and willingness to make balance tweaks is impressive. They split PVE and PVP skills at one point to further help with this. It's only when they got to the point where they decided they wanted to suffocate build wars that things fell apart.

A little story: One night I was running Halls of Heroes in Guild Wars (A Tournament PVP mode). We were running an e-drain, KD warrior build, but heard that there was some new build going nuts. Someone had found out a way to use Warrior/Elementalists to get an elite skill that caused interrupt on KD to trigger over and over again by wielding lighting axe hafts, but without the energy draining drawback to the skill. This was pretty cheese and was facerolling quite a bit. (We beat the one team we faced due to better organization.) Anyways, before the night was over, ANet had hotfixed the skill to remove the ability to exploit it like that. So the imba didn't even last 24 hours.

Also, deck build systems allow for players to create counters and balance the game themselves. This helps a lot, as does ANet's streaming technology. One thing not talked about enough is that ArenaNet has a technical advantage over about everyone else due to their streaming tech.

Indeed. Say what you want about ANet or their design philosophies, but one thing that you cannot argue is they have the best tech infrastructure in gaming. 32 hours of downtime (24 of which were due to needing to physically move the datacenter) over 7 years is probably the best uptime in the industry. Then they can patch without taking servers down and only require a client reboot, can perform maintenance without taking servers down and can stream in new content without patching, and there's no queue to sit in at the login screen. They're doing things that no one else seems to be capable of all without a monthly fee. It really makes you wonder how other companies get away with justifying them though it's pretty clear that the subscription model has been dying over the past few years.

Need some HoM help here...

So I'm sitting at 14/50, and recently came across some good money from a friend who just dumped it on me, so I have 370k to use on this and want to try and at least get to 18/50 or higher if possible.

What's the best way to maximize my spending here to get the most points? Was thinking 1 Tormented weapon (2 pts), 10 Companion Statues (1 pt), 1 unique mini (1 pt), 20 minis (2 pts). Could 370k get me there?

I hope they have plans for an authenticator. They probably have some IP-based security based on the "Security" tab of the account page, but I'd feel better with an authenticator app.

Oh you only want 18? One sec. Yeah it can with ease. What do you want? Cheapest or least time consuming?

http://hom.guildwars2.com/en/#page=details&details=EAAAAAAgIOAAAAAAAABAAAAAAAAAAAAAACEAQAAAAAA

Look at that.

-It'll cost 25k to get the Cloth of the Brotherhood for the companion statues http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Cloth_of_the_Brotherhood
-An Oppressor weapon will get you another point, you can get it by finishing War in Kryta http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/War_in_kryta/walkthrough
-Ancient Armor http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Ancient_armor
-Primeval Armor http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Primeval_Armor

Theoretically getting to the 20 minis would be less time consuming than finishing War in Kryta for the Op weapon depending on your hero gear/skills since all you'd be doing is spamming in Kamadan or EOTN for pets. If you go the pet route then buy all the white minis for years 1-3 before the year 1 purples.

Minipet list

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Minipets#Birthday_Presents

I suggest keeping a list of the pets you don't have in a google doc and deleting them as you get one.

Also to make sure you're not getting ripped off, use http://argos-soft.net/GwEstimator/ for price checking. And do make sure the minis are undedicated.

Ugh. No more app only MMO's where only people with smart phones can have security. Physical keychain authenticators are the way to go.

Well... I certainly have no objections if they also do a physical authenticator. I'd just prefer there was an app available so I don't have to bother with one.

Or just dont be a dummy who clicks on every flashing banner on pornsites and thus dont need an authenticator because your pc isnt a std-infected husk of a thing filled with keyloggers?

Yes, that is certainly the only way anyone has ever had their information compromised. You solved it.

Reached 18 this weekend. Still have to beat Nightfall, Faction Bonus Missions, Furnace of Sorrows, get that unique pet and then some other grinding stuff, dont know how much more I can take. It is just so freaking boring and annoying. Having to run the same road and kill the same monsters over, and over, and over, and over, and over again because of the instances and annoyingly small corridors that are guaranteed to aggro just about everything within 2 kilometers.

hm, how hard would it be to get to 6/30 to unlock all the armor pieces? I've bought Nightfall on Steam a while ago, but didn't really play it. Come to think of it, I still have my account with which I completed the Faction campaign. That should be worth some points, no?

Not too hard you get three points instantly for linking your account. It might take a day or two but not too long.

Yeah it's pretty atrocious, especially with having to get the protector titles in some missions adding a lot of stress. I picked factions first and getting through that at the moment but it's just so dull, between the bad voice acting and the terrible map I'm not sure how much more I can take. :(

As Quadrophenic said to me......Welcome to the Fire Vambraces and Black Widow Club!!!! Congrats!

- Stolen Sunspear armor is pretty easy to get compared to the other's. Maybe try to get a few of those yourself to save some cash?

- I thought Tormented weapons were insane in cost compared to Destroyer? If you have finished War in Kryta, I can give you ... I think 50 War Supplies to help towards an Oppressor weapon. Not much, but it will help at least get 2 medals of honor.

- Minipets.....such a gamble, I hate them. They only seem to be getting more and more expensive the closer GW2 gets.

- Are you far enough along to be able to get the Black Moa Chick? Wait...probably a stupid question, since your HoM doesn't say you have beat Sorrow's Furnace. I forget, are you the person who didn't have all of the campaigns? If so, the Black Moa Chick is out unless purchased.

- How are you coming with beating the Cantha missions for Eternal Protector of Cantha?

So just blindly pre-purchased this and purchased the original.

However I just realised I purchased only Guild wars and not the trilogy by accident.

Hopefully I can get in touch with CS to cancel it and repurchase the trilogy.

I just saw platinum edition and figured it included everything. :(

The trilogy doesn't include Eye of the North.

just looked up a guide and it seems like the quickest way to get 6 points is to beat all 3 campaigns. That ... seems like a huge time investment just to unlock a few armor pieces.

I made a preliminary thief build for my first character. What do you guys think about it? It seems basic but I think it might be something worth building on.

My phone makes it hard to look over carefully and I'd have to see the traits associated with it, but I'm guessing it's for WvW? Scorpion Wire is a great skill, but it loses some utility in sPVP for example.

Beyond that, I'd have to see your traits. Those can make a build completely amazing or worthless.

EDIT: Also, you're seriously lacking conditional removal.

EDIT 2: I'll take a look again when i can use a computer. That site hates my iPhone.

You didn't put any runes into your armor or chose an amulet, making the build incomplete.
You have like 10000 health without that, meaning you are dead in 2-3 seconds.

Fixed that: http://gw2skills.net/editor/en/?fYQ...hJA;TEBA2ysEQJxSllCLqnMPJey+k7J5TLOGEco4RxkAA

edit: Yeah I really do lack condition removal, it will most likely replace scorpion sting when I actually have some experience playing the class. But from the start I want to be able to fuck with people in WvsWvsW. :)

Pre-Purchased at £37. Caved-in to the 3 day headstart over buying retail for £30 lol.

The Guild Wars 2 program is currently downloading the game, but I can't log into it - I guess not being able to login is normal because game isn't out yet?

Finally got it to load your traits. That is one glass cannon thief. No stun break, all power and precision. You're going to die, a lot. But if that's what you want, that's cool.

Nah I want to be able to survive. But I have 0 experience with the class so far and I have to start somewhere. Feel free to give advice!

And as I said in my edit, stun break will be added. Scorpion Tail will probably be removed and shortbow will be replaced with sword+pistol. My weapon selection is not set in stone, especially not the second weapon choice.

Slightly changed build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/en/?fYQ...14D;TEBA2ysEQJxSllCLqnMPJey+k7J5TLOGEco4RxkAA

One of the time consuming parts of the HoM is getting the tapestries. Account wide stuff is fine but just to place my pet (which I had for years before EotN even came out) means I need to complete some of EotN with that character even though I was planning to not really work on any HoM stuff with him.

It seems weird that you trait signet usage, yet only use 1 signet. And the active on that signet isn't all that great. I'd take your points out of critical strikes and put them elsewhere. Maybe finish out Shadow Arts or take some points in Trickery.

Thanks guys, but I should have mentioned that I only have Factions and EotN, so my options are a bit more limited. No Sunspear, no Ancient or Primeval Armor, War in Kryta is out, as is the Black Moa Chick.

Basically, I'd like to go the least time consuming route, so really am willing to just purchase things, just trying to get an idea of whether or not I have enough funds to make it happen and on that note thanks Jira, that price check tool is invaluable!

If anyone has any more pointers, would love to hear 'em!

This is a good build. I would prefer to see some additional buffing of your poisons since you're carrying two, but you got a lot of good condition removal and evasion choices.

If it works for you as is; though? My preferences don't mean shit. It's a solid build.

It seems weird that you trait signet usage, yet only use 1 signet. And the active on that signet isn't all that great. I'd take your points out of critical strikes and put them elsewhere. Maybe finish out Shadow Arts or take some points in Trickery.

That's where I am as well. Infiltrators Signet or Agility would help the build more. My biggest concern would be mobility. If you're a glass cannon, that's fine - but you better be able to move extremely well. I would change to Withdrawal for the heal, add Shadowstep for the movement and condition removals, and consider Technobabble to throw in a daze.

Playing Factions, up to Mission 8: Sunjiang District, how do I get my henchmen to pick up the Urn/Spear?

Your henchmen or heroes cannot pick up anything. You have to do everything yourself. They are only there to kill things for you.
Also you don't really need the Urn or Spear for the fight, they make it a bit easier but you are able to do this mission without using those two items.
