Xbox Live Fall 2012 Dashboard Public Beta - Signup Now

Just updated, they combined the TV and video tabs into one. Now all they need to do is place the Games tab before it.
Just grabbing the update...

Is there are changelog any where?

Edit: Found it:

Hi Beta Team!
I wanted to send you a list of changes you'll see in today's update, which is imminent. Many of these changes are thanks to your feedback and bug-reporting, so thanks very much! I hope you have a great weekend of entertainment and enjoy the changes. More updates based on your feedback are coming in the near future.

Now you can find all of your TV and Movies in one place—the previously separate Video and TV hubs have been combined into the new TV & Movies hub. In the new TV & Movies hub, you can browse the latest and most popular TV or movie content available from all of our app providers and search our entire catalog of TV and movies. You can also find and launch your TV provider’s app.

We now include a “Search the web for…” tile in our search results which links you directly to results for your search via bing.com. You will need to have the Internet Explorer app installed already for this to work.

Black level problems in Xbox Video and Xbox Music have been fixed.

Connectivity issues with some older model routers have been resolved.

Network discoverability issues with some home wireless networks have been resolved.

Wireless accessories for Rock Band and Guitar Hero that were broken in the last update have been fixed.

I had a problem where everytime i used the internet explorer it would stop and a message appears saying to make sure i had a storage device connected and that it had enough space then it would boot back to dashboard.

But my hdd is a 250gb and 100gb still free.

It's fixed though as I just deleted the app and redownloaded it and now it runs.

Just in case anyone has the same issues just delete the app from hdd and redownload the internet explorer.

Never understood neogafs issue with this. If you are moving through the tabs with the bumpers you pass by the video tab so quickly, who cares.

Besides, most of the games are either in the tray (default option) or in the quicklaunch

Finally got around to trying the browser out and it works rather well, it's smooth and loads rather quick, just a shame twitch.tv needs flash to run :(

Umm have they completely removed the ABCDEF keyboard with this new update? I'm on QWERTY with no way to go back (it seems). Been using ABCDEF since the beginning!

It's more of a preference for me than an actual issue. These are game consoles first and media hubs second, so IMO the games tab should come before the TV & Movie tab. I understand the logic of the current layout, but I don't agree with it.

It's a gaming console first and foremost. It's not unreasonable to expect the games tab to be closer to the startup screen.

To you (and me) it is, but since MS has metrics which suggest that gaming is not the most common use of the system (video/media is) then I guess they are catering to the majority.

In a perfect scenario, the order of the tabs would be user configurable.

That's actually exactly why they'd put video before gaming. Of course the consumer is going to use it for gaming... By putting video before games, they're forcing you to glance at/pass by what they have.

Microsoft puts a lot of thought into these sorts of things. I remember on an earlier dashboard you would use the triggers to scroll past a few main categories quickly, but it would always stop on the Games Marketplace (I think it was), even if it was the very next category.

Pretty sneaky stuff, but every little bit helps (them).

There it is. I kept getting strict NAT ever since it updated, kept checking the configs and nada, I just put everything in automatic and Gears and BO are picking it right.

They just changed the name from "quickplay" to "recent"
Maybe he meant the Quicklaunch "Quickplay" on the guide menu. It's no longer there, but if you select Recent there, it takes you to a menu where you can flip to All and access the Quicklaunch menu as it's always been.

They cleaned up the demo section as well. The "New Releasess" in the demo section no longer lists all of the Indie titles.

Sorry I thought that "Quickplay" in guide menu looked like this Recent option which is present now.
So what was there in quickplay menu ?
Forgive me for my short memory.

yes! the wireless music peripherals issue has been fixed! time for some rock band 3!

edit: so i only tested the rock band 2 guitar and it worked fine. but apparently the cymbals on pro drums are still broken. see here.

Just signed in and it asked me to set up some security. a choice of either contacting an alternate email, phone text, or phone call.

that's new right? finally. that's good news.

These things haven't been straight game consoles for years from Nintendo naming their system an "Entertainment System" to Sony trying to register and classify the PS2 as a computer with Federal Governments around the world.

They fixed that about a week ago.

Sure, they can call it whatever they want, and they do have lots of capabilities these days.

But, what makes Microsoft more money? The games or the tv/movie features? It's the games, so my point still stands. It's a game console first, so the games tab should be as conveniently located as possible.

So it looks like the TV & Movies tab will be combined in all regions eventually; other countries should see this change in the next 10 days.

Videos that used to work on sites before the update no longer work. Did they kill HTML5 support on "adult oriented sites"?

Can you share these metrics with us?

I can believe Xbox owners spend more time in total consuming video-based media and TV than gaming... I resolutely do not believe that on average they spend more time on their xbox watching video than playing games.

Microsoft reported something themselves on this a few months ago if I remember correctly. They basically said Xbox users spend more time using media apps on their Xbox than they do gaming these days.

But, I contend that it's easier to spend that kind of time when a movie on Netflix is 2 hours. So if someone is using Hulu and Netflix as their sources for TV viewing these days, it's not that weird that they might spend more HOURS on those apps than they do on games, BUT I still think people think "videogames" when they think of an Xbox, and the games portion of the Xbox business is certainly creating more revenue for Microsoft.

I noticed since the update that the Alan Wake premium theme has the black zone in the bottom showing like "stairs" in the black levels, and the ALAN WAKE text in the middle is almost faded in the bottom part, can anyone with the same theme confirm if the same happen to him?

Even if you go into the change theme option, you can see the preview fine, but when you accept the theme it appears screwed :(

Xbox Companion also seems to have been officially renamed to Xbox SmartGlass. Been using my iPhone as a remote to scroll through my Netflix queue.

This.

I bought my Xbox to play games but during the week I usually only have time to catch up on tv shows or watch increments of movies. I don't always have time to sit down and really accomplish anything in a game with the limited time I have. Sure on weekends I'll get a chance to just zone out for a few hours a day and play but with constant interruptions and other things that need my attention it's a lot easier to pause a tv show than it is to listen to my random teammates online telling me what an asshole I am for just standing still in the middle of a match while I tend to whatever the hell I had to do.

I did a quick search and was unable to find a good source, but it appears what I said was slighly incorrect. The latest info I could find was that Xbox Live users were using non-gaming services over Live more than multiplayer gaming, but not necessarily gaming in general.

Regardless, MS believes that a large percentage of their userbase wants to (and does) use MS and 3rd party services on their Xbox for things other than gaming, so they have tuned the dashboard to make those services easier to access. Does it make accessing gaming a bit less easy? I guess, but not enough for me to care much one way or the other. And this is coming from someone who doesn't live in US so I don't have access to some of the US-only services (ESPN, Hulu, etc).

anyone else having problems downloading this update?

its been sitting here at like 15% forever. i stopped and restarted a few times it goes to about the same spot and just sits there...

edit: looks like im not alone. i see a post about it on the xbox forum (finally got in there). this is taking for fucking ever.

People are still complaining about where the tabs are located? I've never understood why the tab locations are such a problem for people, who cares if it takes 1-2 extra clicks. Ever use a ps3? That's clicks everywhere to get into anything

If you are that in a hurry to play the game, just don't ever turn your Xbox off. Just leave the game running forever and when you want to play, no clicks cause its already running. (if that sounds crazy, so does arguing over tab placement).

I know, right? It's like people actually think something can be improved.

I say just keep everything exactly like it is right now, because after all, what's a few more clicks?

got the update, took over an hour.

havent gotten a prompt for security features. now everything i try to download is taking FOREVER.

im downloading 1 song from the rock band store and it just took 5+ minutes on a 25MB connection... wtf. oops it just started over...

yeah took over 20 minutes to download one RB song. ugh.

Did a bit of research into this, it seems like it's normal and parte of the update, the bottom of the themes is covered in a gray fog, what bs.
