Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

I'd do a 30 day.

I believe it will be $800 for the low end Surface pro with no wacom pen (sold seperately) and ivy bridge.

If an announcement comes out that it will be using haswell then I will agree with you on the $850 + price point.

Ban will be the day the announce the price or the day it releases ?

Haswell? Are you high? It's Ivy Bridge.

Haswell or no, it's on like donky kong! 30 day ban. If I win, I can opt to give you a choice of different punishment. If you win, it's 30 day ban for me. You win if Surface Pro comes out at less than $850 MSRP (no online coupons or specials or whatever sales deals) with any configuration.

Nooooo, don't ban Shog, he needs to review the note 10.1!

No need for worries. This is like taking candy from a baby. :D

I mean, outside of the keyboard screen cover... it doesnt do anything special, its a tablet... and it looks like most of thw windows tablets were going to look like. (Rectangles with a windows button)

It has a nice well understood UI and a big infrastructure and the most popular office software in the world?

I should note I work for MS in a different division, as full disclosure, but those are just the reasons I am looking forward to buying one. I'm not shilling, I have an iPad, but I also actually really want a Surface and will likely have to pay full whack for one.

Aren't you guys supposed to get one for free? God Steve is cheap.

Screw the ban bet - whoever loses should have to buy a Surface Pro for the winner (or face a permaban). ;)

I don't think the mods here enforce/support ban bets either way, so it will be on your honor to uphold a self-imposed ban.

I think it's really charitable to assume that just because MS said that the device would be "comparable to ultra books", that means it will be as cheap as the lowest-priced ultra book.

Still no talk about how much ram we can expect on these Pro versions? Is it a safe assumption that all Windows 8 x86 tablets will run 64-bit versions of Windows 8... hell, will there even be none-ARM 32 bit versions of Windows 8?

Hm, how do you guys think the Surface tablet (and other metro tablets) compare with the new Samsung Note 10.1 as a sketch/note taking device?

handwriting in windows is pretty good. you open onenote, start to write down stuff with the pen and you can actually search for your contents later. so good. onenote in general is pretty great

Well any win8 pro is going to have an advantage since it can run full fledged art programs like photoshop and painter (if it's powerful enough to run it properly). Though the Note does have sketchbook as well.

Lenovo ships the TPT2 with only 2 GB RAM and yes, there's still a 32-bit version of Windows 8. You can thank Intel for that.

I haven't agreed to that. Stakes need to be up front or no dice

I think this is what the tablet market will play out for the rest of the year:

Aug: Galaxy Note 10.1 release (really late, why didn't they upgrade the screen resolution?)
Aug end: Galaxy Note 2 announce
Early Sep: I am guessing MS sneak in the Surface RT accessories/price announcement here
Sep 12: iPad mini (and release?)
Oct 26: Surface RT release,
Also release: Asus RT tablet, Lenovo Atom tablet 2, Acer Atom 10" tablet w510, Dell Latitute 10 Atom tablet (probably also a crappy HP Slate 2? )

Who else in the RT club again? Samsung?
So far Samsung is the only one who hasn't shown its hand. What's the chance of a i5 tablet announcement to shock the world? Probably not very high.

Jan 2013: RT license restriction lifted (haha like who cares)
Jan 2013: Surface Pro release.

What about the Win8 RT tablet?
Seeing as that one is more likely to end up in the same price range of the Samsung Note 10.1 (500-600 dollars).

Well that entirely depends on what apps come out on the windows store. It won't be able to run all the desktop art programs.

Surface pro in march with haswell

Partners better make better products than the surface instead of half assing most of the stuff they make. Microsoft also needs to do good with the surface or else windows 8 tablets are gonna stay in the dust.

And probably won't have as wide-spread support as Android, right?
Well, it looks like Note is the way to go then at a $500 budget.

You should wait for the Lenovo Tablet 2 price. Its an atom tablet that has battery life almost as long as the note; has pen support and runs real photoshop; plus you can dualboot Android.

Really the only down side is shorter battery life and maybe 100 more expensive.
