I could see him destroying Biden in the debates, but on balance, I think he will turn off most of the middle.

Biden is a to the point kind of guy, Ryan is a semantics guy from what I've seen of him. So I don't think he'll destroy them, but it will be interesting to watch since normally Biden's type is a semantics and details type's worst nightmare.

Paul Ryan? Really did he learn nothing from Mccain? VPs can't win the election for you but they can certainly lose it for you.

Please be Palin 2.0, please be Palin 2.0!

This election season will be very boring unless he picks someone who just completely bombs alongside him in a glorious fashion. Everyone already knows Romney doesn't stand a chance. We need to see another hail mary by the republican party.

-edit, awwwwwwww, wtf, Ryan. He looks like death. No fun

If it's Paul Ryan, that's Mitt Romney saying "fuck it, I'm not going to win this election, might as well go down in flames".

The tea party inmates are running the Republican asylum. Obama must be really pleased about his chances now.

Pure insanity to pick Ryan. He has literally no upside. I...I can't even begin to understand this decision.

God damn it Wisconsin, can we go two months without getting involved in a national political shitstorm?

They just announced it being Ryan on NBC.

What a laughable disaster.

If he had chosen Condi Rice it would've been a very different race.
Now, it's over, it's just over.

If he had picked Rice, it would have been the first thing I respected Romney for in a while. Not that she doesn't have lots of negatives. But her realization that half the previous administration was insane was one of the few heartening things in those dark years.

Now I'm really scared. Seriously this pretty much confirms Romney is going full on tea party retard. They cannot be allowed to be elected.

As a Canadian I'm not familiar with Paul Ryan. Why does everyone think it's a bad pick?

Not doubting it, just curious.

Yeah this has me scared too. As I said in PoliGAF thread, before there was this little ray of hope that maybe a Romney presidency wouldn't be doom. Maybe he'd be slightly moderate. This pick, to me, shows that he's gone off the deep end and Norquist and the tea party are controlling him like a puppet.

His budget plan is complete insanity. It guts social security and turns medicare into a voucher system and practically just guts the entire government by 2050. He's an Ayn Rand worshipper to the fullest (makes his staff read Atlas Shrugged).

He is very very libertarian. Was the guy who drew up the plan to end medicare as we know it and switch to vouchers to force the elderly to go shop for their own insurance.

Are u kidding? Bringing the shitstorm that happened after 2010 in Wisconsin to the national stage is perfect. When Joe The non-engaged-voter asks who is this Ryan fellow? Wisconsin, union busting, and Ryan budget will be right there for the googling.

He's a budget fundamentalist who cited Ayn Rand as his reason for getting into politics.

Good news! He's thrown her under the bus and now rejects her philosophy.

“I reject her philosophy,” Ryan says firmly. “It’s an atheist philosophy. It reduces human interactions down to mere contracts and it is antithetical to my worldview. If somebody is going to try to paste a person’s view on epistemology to me, then give me Thomas Aquinas,” who believed that man needs divine help in the pursuit of knowledge. “Don’t give me Ayn Rand,” he says.

Looks like Romney found someone who flip flops as much as him. This also reminds me how now Obama has the Catholic Church to back him up against Romney/Ryan

Nearly 60 prominent theologians, priests, nuns and national Catholic social justice leaders released a statement today refuting Rep. Paul Ryan’s claim that his GOP budget proposal reflects Catholic teaching on care for the poor, which he made in an interview earlier this week with the Christian Broadcasting Network. The group of Catholic leaders — including a former high-ranking U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops official, a priest in Rep. Ryan’s district and the leadership team of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas — called on Ryan to “reconsider his radical budget proposal and refrain from distorting Church teaching.”

This is the first time I've been inclined toward Romney.

Yes, thinking about your ideology and changing it over time is "flip flopping". We should all be set in our present ways 'til our death.

Wikipedia said:
In 2002, Ryan voted in favor of the Iraq War resolution, authorizing President George W. Bush to use military force in Iraq.[29]
In 2003, Ryan voted in favor of the Medicare Part D prescription drug expansion.[30]
In 2008, Ryan voted for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the Wall Street bailout that precipitated the Tea Party movement, and the bailout of GM and Chrysler.[32]

Not gonna win Ron Paul supporters though.

Not really sure what most of you guys are talking about in here. Romney needs to energize the conservative base, and Ryan does that. He has been in congress for 14 years long before the tea party, but he appeals to the tea party with his budget. While yes, his budget proposal is VERY stringent at least he has a proposal and is putting something out there. His budget not only looks at the short term budget shortfall, but the long term fiscal cliff of $222 TRILLION. Our country needs some sort of economic plan to move forward with, the current instability we have now does nothing to help the economy and the confidence that investors have in Wall Street or small business owners have in hiring people. A boring pick like Portman or Pawlenty would have done nothing and Obama would have continued with his lead and taken a 2nd term, now we will have to wait and see how a young candidate like Ryan will play out because he attracts blue collar voters in the midwest.

Regardless, it'll be Romney and Obama who make or break the election, the VP plays a much more minor role

An atheist philsophy. Hey I'm not as familiar with Ryan's social views. How much of a fundie is he?

Romney needs to fire up the independent base. Putting someone on the ticket who wants to kill off the government does not appeal to independents. The tea party does not appeal to independents.
