Fighting Games Weekly | August 6-12

Has there been much to indicate that Injustice is a game that is worth playing in tournaments? Seems deliberately not tournament friendly. For what I know, it seems more like MK9, BB, SCV, or VF5:FS could take that spot. Persona 4: Arena and FS being games at EVO would be pretty exciting to me. Haven't played P4A yet, but I think those two will be my main games for awhile. Unfortunately Skullgirls seems doomed.

FS's fate is going to rest on how it handles TTT2- if it can draw good numbers into Sept-Oct, I think it's got a shot, but I don't think that will happen.

I think DOA has a slim shot- depends if folks give it a shot.

I don't think MK or SC have any shot at coming back, and I even think KOF might be in trouble.

Interesting tweet from Dieminion. I'm surprised he thinks that highly of SFxT (or perhaps he thinks very lowly of games other than SF4?). He primarily plays keepaway which is something rather difficult to do in SFxT thanks to the forward roll.

It's going to be interesting how well he'll do in the SF25 tournament this weekend.

Just a few months ago he said it was so bad he didn't want to play his GF match with Chris G so they just split and not play GF.

Pretty sure it is sarcasm given that he called the game ass and his Evo moment was getting eliminated from it. Theory fighter, Guile is amazing:

1. his damage output is way better than SF4. eg. crouching forward was great but now it can chain/boost rush, his air to air were great and now counter hits lead to juggles

2. stages are huge, it's long projectile course to navigate

3. get up rolls and alpha counters keep him from getting pressured/vortexed.

In short everyone that made Guile good in SF4 is there, but what kept him down in SF4 is gone.

Sure, the money that NRS will be putting up. Can't remember who, but someone mentioned that some stages would be tournament friendly. I assume the MK9 will transition over to Injustice.

MK got 200. It's dead.

KOF got 1K+ (yes, free shirt, but still) and had a super, super hype set of matches in the T8. The only issue there is that they need to seriously consider cutting KoF final day to T6 or T4 due to how long the game's sets run.

SCV got 500. It's the wild card because it probably got enough to get a spot if there's nothing else to take it (especially since it lets there be a "3D" game both days) but it could easily be displaced by another game making it (Injustice, SFxT getting fixed to actually be fun) or EVO returning to 5 games.

Don't say that to the MK community. They will kill you quite literally.

MK9 imo isn't dea but its just lacking compared to the new games due to how insular the MK9 community is. They keep to themselves outside some big names PL, and CDjr (maybe tom brady too) etc and they almost prefer it that way. Its a very loyal community and I hope for the best, its just that EVO has a time frame and it can't have every game.

Injustice will obviously replace it since its replacing it at MLG according to some talks about WB's sponsorship.

I don't know, I find it hard to argue the migration of a large portion of the community from MK9 to Injustice either way. I think the migration potential could be big or really minuscule.

No way is it or MK9 guaranteed a spot next at EVO the same way KoF, TTT2 or Capcom games are.

People will migrate because of the cash plain and simple. WB did an amazing job of adding great pot bonuses for MK9's big tournaments, and for Injustice it be will be no different. The people will also migrate is that I would guess the play style would be very similar to that of MK9

Well Injustice has a lot of different mechanics then 9, it still has the same general "feel", and it fixes a lot of the issues the community has with 9, and if it does indeed have a better training mode and online play, pretty much everyone will migrate. Some might be a bit grumpy about it though, as some are kind of upset that NRS is wasting there time on "lame super hero shit" and not just making UMK9.

Saying that MK players aren't gonna migrate to Injustice is like saying BB players aren't playing Persona right now.

errrr Yes/No. Some are yes. Some aren't until they see the game in action. I use to be a poster on TYM so I have seen the many reactions to Injustice, both positive and negative. Unlike BB which was majority consensus was to play Persona because BB is "dead" and not at EVO.

Obviously, not every single person is going to be jumping on that game. Kinda goes without saying.

Well what I mean is there is a bigger division. You should of seen the outcry when they announced injustice was hold back to block. Many were straight up furious since a good portion of MK9 players are strictly MK players and holding back to block is not a MK thing. Matter of fact some even said "Why is NRS trying to appeal to the capcom scrubs"

They're that out of touch with reality? (I also meant "dead" in the "No chance of getting a prime Evo slot" sense. Clearly there'll be a side tournament.)

I actually would love to see them run Top 8s for some of the side tournaments on the second or third stream late at night, just to give the smaller games exposure.

Different communities react differently to things in new games they're not used to. Also goes without saying.

None of this changes the point, which is that in general, a lot of MK dudes are going to be playing Injustice. There's a reason why MK sites are paying a lot more attention to that game than the Capcom-centric sites.

I don't follow the MK community so I don't know how they're reacting to the game but why are you certain theyll switch over to injustice? I'm assuming MK players like the Mortal kombat franchise which is why they play it, not because NRS made it or the engine is very similar.

I'm guessing you play MK and planning to switch over to injustice?

MK got 200. It's dead.

I think it was 291 to be exact, but still that's a very low turn out considering that it's EVO we're talking about. I remember Wizard saying something about Blazblue not coming back because it couldn't even get 300 people for the "World Championship"(aka EVO). So it's not looking good for MK. If these guys don't immigrate to Injustice, or Injustice doesn't find a new audience then NetherRealms won't have a fighter at EVO.

Why are people trying to figure out what games will be at Evo based on what's going on right now? Especially turnouts.

wtf

Persona came out just this week and last week people were saying whether or not they think it would be at Evo.

I recall Mr.Wizard saying that they might need to add a 4th day to Evo. People should keep their minds open about what will be there. I wouldn't be surprised if Playstation All-Stars got a spot. Sony is sponsoring the tournament, y'know.

I hope Jackie Chan in Fists of Fire makes it to Evo this year.

...

They should release that game on XBL/PSN. I wonder who owns the rights to that game

Not sure if this constitutes this week or next week for this thread but thought I'd mention it.

Melee-FC Legacy is this weekend, Sunday-Tuesday, and there will be a livestream for all those days. All Smash games pre. much. Decent sized turnout too (over 160+)

Links and Zeldas

Oo thanks for this

playstation allstars would only work if people included into the road of evo and got mad support from the community. TBH that is probably one of the few ways for Sony to really grab the market with this game and distinguish itself from being called a smash clone.

I'm hoping for the best. Just hoping there is a character I will like. Nothing worse than picking up a fighter/brawler and having nobody you enjoy playing.

hahaha this would honestly be interesting
Seth Killian and Clockwork doing commentary.

Naw. There are worse things:
1) The character you most enjoy being the worst in the game.
2) The game, being a team game, requires you to find 3 characters, but you can only find 2 you like.
3) The character that best compliments yours on a team is one you hate.
4) The characters you love have no synergy together.

PSABR wouldn't be surprising at all, TBH.

Sony likes pouring money into this kind of stuff. I think projected turnouts would still take precedence over that though, even with a theoretical pot bonus factored in.

and this is why despite being a pretty fun game I can't get into marvel 100%

Also Magus is on FGTV commentary complaining about people's character choices not being high tier enough.
He was complaining about it all at evo. He's totally sticking to his "top tier or ass" philosophy.

I can't take something like that seriously because there is no definite tier list for the game and aside from a couple of exceptions a lot of the "top tier" characters have mediocre support value. There is no real definite concept of what a high tier team is right now because months ago people would've scoffed at the idea of a Morrigan or Modok team in top 8 evo.

Similarly, it's why I am the game's bitch. I simply must find a way to make this all work. I have 2/3 I'm happy with. Vergil is alright, but he's kind of boring to play as. He doesn't make my brain work like Dormammu and Morrigan do. The characters that do, don't work well with those two. Aside from Dr. Strange, but he's ass in general, so it doesn't matter.

Just give me a minute to change my account password. Clearly you've been reading my PMs or something.

You can't just use last year's performance to judge what will be best for the following year.

You have to look at what has come out since then, and how many players are keeping at it.

KOF has a high skill cap which is draining the pot monsters, and Persona's a big honeypot for ex-KOF players. KOF at Evo next year would likely just draw 300.

i must be lucky because i like all my characters and they usually go well together. just wish gimlet dealt more damage from dhc's.

Yeah, it depends on your taste. For me, the game needs more characters that are really complex and have long-term goals like Dormammu does. I dig a very particular kind of character. I like a character that constantly forces me to be doing something in my head, predicting opponent movements, controlling the screen, and, ideally, having far-reaching goals. I'm mostly in category 4. The characters I love just don't go together because Capcom didn't give any of them good assists.

Don't worry atlus will give free shirts everywhere! KOF/Persona 1k each entrants
