Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Man, I'm so excited for this game... However, I still can't shake my skepticism about this game actually being as amazing as the four or so hours I've put into it indicate. Chalk it up to being utterly disappointed in every other MMO post-WoW, I suppose. Does anyone else feel similarly?

I can't imagine playing the game with a controller. It just boggles my mind that they found a way. I struggle enough with the precision a mouse and keyboard gives me.

Nah. In ever other MMO (a lot) I've played, the phase of somehow being used to the game, and the loss of real, honest FUN you have when playing something new kicks in around a week in. After 2 BWEs and like 3 Stress tests, I'm as pumped as I was before.

Maybe I'm in for a huge disappointment, but at this point this game's got all the trust I can give.

No, because I love PvP, and this game has it in spades.

Is the Ranger longbow bugged? I was getting a lot of "obstructed" messages when my targets were in plain sight. Could have been because of lag, yes. But it happened waaaay too often, which is a shame because it's my favorite weapon in the game.
Lag. I was getting the same mesaage on my warrior in melee range yesterday.

Regarding your character's personal story, do the three race based questions at character creation have any other effect besides the story? Like do they give an elite skill or some stat bonuses? I am a min/maxer at heart, so would like to know (and would prefer they don't give any advantage so I can choose whichever interests me).

no, they just change your storyline

Yeah, I was having camera problems as well. General control problems, I didn't get how I could do a complete 180 quickly enough. Maybe I need to fiddle with the settings more. In videos it looks like people are swinging the camera around with ease.

Bind a key to about face. Instant 180 degree turn.

For whatever reason ANet doesn't bind look behind and about face to keys by default. Those two keybinds are absolutely necessary, IMO.

yeah, after playing around with the skill calculator some more, I'm definitely not going to roll a Warrior or Guardian. Grew tired of my Elementalist in the second BWE (are elemental weapons viable now?) and I'm certainly not going to play another Thief again. The Engineer is okay, but I'm pretty sure I'll have more fun with a Spirit Ranger build

yup, I guess 3 characters are enough

How do you deal with the relative lack of buttons, btw? Gamepad + keyboard?

I can see the general controls being enjoyable with my 360pad, but not sure how I'd deal with all the skills/etc.

Just put this together, it is the setup I use - pretty sure other people are using something different but this is absolutely smooth for me.

Perfect for Couch Potato Computing!

I re-rolled Thief again yesterday to give it another go, for whatever reason I just can't seem to get into it. Assassin was my main in the original Guild Wars, I have so many hours put into him and so many HoM statues that the minute Thief was announced, I thought I knew what class I was going to be.

Going Warrior instead for launch, but seeing I plan on playing everything at some point, I guess I will see if Thief grows on me down the road.

Do you guys think the game will be playable without queues at launch? I've always wanted to be there at an MMO launch, never had one though.

There will never be queues (apart from WvWvW) because you just get put on an overflow server.
There will however be login issues and lag.

Hopefully, as they have the overflow server to catch people.

As a side the best in-game 'launch' I've witnessed was in WoW and the countdown to the 1st Expansion pack. Months of 'War Effort' grinding to build up the army and set up the gate. Probably the height of WoW for me.

Has anybody had substantive time with the ranger? I am trying to see where their strength comes from in PvE/PvP

jack of all trades, master of ... something I guess. Strong damage both in melee and ranged combat, good defense, lots of skills that apply conditions, has the best pets, spirits are great (especially the elite one)

that's just my first impression though, didn't play much as a Ranger

I switched over to the ranger in the last hour of the stress test and found him to have more hp than my guard but a lot squishier.

There will never be queues in this game outside of WvW in terms of wait for your number so you can start playing. If you login and the zone you're in is full, you'll be moved to an overflow server while you wait to get into your server's version of the zone. While in the overflow you'll be playing with people who are also waiting to get into their version of the zone on their server from all over. Any progress made here is counted and when a spot opens up you'll get a prompt asking if you want to move or stay and at that point it's up to you. The awesome thing about the overflow server is not only does it allow you to play the game no matter when you want to, it's a way to make friends from other servers. You could make a friend there, add them to your contacts list and then go guest on their server and go play with them and make more friends on their server. Outside of WvW, the entire game is one globally connected game.

Also, 20% off on GMG for EU.

I'm expecting a lot of lag in WvW at the start, and ANET will continue to optimize and optimize till it gets better within the first three days or so.

Thinking of dropping the dough to get a mechanical keyboard... Think it will be a good investment with lots of Guild Wars in mind?

I love mine, but you might want to try one before you buy to see if it's what you want as some people don't like the tactile feeling.

GW2 probably won't benefit all that much from one, since it requires fairly low APM compared to a game like Dota 2 or SC2. But to be honest, I think mechanical keyboards are just better to type on in general, so I definitely recommend getting one at some point. I have a low-mid tier one, the Razer Blackwidow, and I like it a lot.

Just picked up this exact keyboard! Digging it so far.

I wholeheartedly agree. This is much like after all that "darker and edgier" trend of the nineties, some forms of entertainment went back to "it's OK to make things heroic and clear-cut". For an MMO, in fact, I think this is essential; you are your character, after all, why make me feel like a jerk? We have games that do that (very good games in fact, not naming them as some are spoilers in themselves), but an MMO is where I'm going to spend a lot of time and in a sense "be" my character; I need to care about them, to feel they are heroes, or at least good people.

I had that problem in WoW, because quests were all over the place in regards to character alignment (some were downright evil), but since you never knew what lied down the chain, you really couldn't afford to skip them if you were a completionist (plus you pretty much often played in automode). Here, not only is that problem not present (you are ALWAYS helping good people and working for the common good, that I've seen at least), if it came to be, you can safely skip an event or heart and know it's not locking anything down the road.

Maybe you need to be a hero but I certainly do not. Heroes on the straight and narrow are the most boring character to attempt to involve yourself in. It's like a one size fits all mold with a slot that says "heroism goes here". Of course the problem is with all these MMOs is they always seem to need to be epic. You can't play a very skilled rogue, scamming, hustling, filching, and bamboozling to stay alive and get ahead on the mean streets of Lion's Arch. Eventually all the mmo and mostly all rpg storyline succumb to the idea of you are the big hero who is going to save the day (OR MAYBE YOU CAN CHOOSE BAD STUFFS BECAUSE YOU ARE BAD). It's laughable to be honest.

One day they'll be a fantasy MMO based around Eve Online's open door to let the players create the world. Design the tools let the players make shops, cities and build up the economy. Cities v Cities. Votes for leaders and rulers, etc. One day.

Yep that's my dream game. An empty world... nothing in it. People create civilizations from the ground up.

As much as i'd love this, it would turn out horrible since the "elitists" will destroy it. OT: Does anyone have a link to that recent trait calculator that has the equipment as well as amulets?

Eve online is a terrible game precisely because of that.

That'll be Mortal Online. It exists. It's not even that bad.

What's bad about it is that the world is WAY too small, and WAY to boring. No hidden things, treasures, stories. It was pretty cool in Beta though, a world to discover with only a few places of civilization and danger (aka griefers) behind every corner (full looting, no real permadeath since you can go back to your body - if you find it), and a really nice skill system without levels, together with a solid extensive crafting system, but by now it's world is probably full of player houses, cities and castles in random locations.

I think it's first big content update (a huge city which name I forgot) is about to release, the last one was a enormously complex real-time weather calculation as far as I remember. I honestly liked it, but the pricing for Europe (expensive, plus monthly fees) threw me off. It feels more like work than like a game to actually DO something, but I can see Eve players having fun with it. Last time I checked it felt very clumsy at times, but it was really fun to explore the world with a friend until we noticed there's not that much to actually find.

So feel free to try it out, it's really not a bad game if you search for hardcore sandbox fantasy :)

Oh look at that, going by the YT comments, it seems to have shaped up with the last patches, I might try again by myself :)

I haven't had anything to do with GW2 for a long, long time. I've pre purchased and I am now installing. I take it that I've missed out on all the fun until the Headstart, right?

Well you mention a city update. I mean a sandbox world with nothing. Wilderness.. build your own towns.. into cities etc.

Yeah, that's the gist of the game. Eve has space stations, right?

Another stress test in the coming week is very likely, but not guaranteed.
