Fighting Games Weekly | August 6-12

Damn this was a slow ass week for fgc gaf. No drama, no news and no tournaments. I think highlight of the week for me was the Big 2 Grand finals between Moons and RayRay plus that Canadian mm.

There was that one time this year when someone from bestgaf got banned cause he was creepin a little too hard on another gaffer at an LA meet-up (allegedly) and there was ensuing drama that happened afterward. I forget if that was a reason why it got locked down once though.

Also the penchant for mad trolling

Yep, I remember that. It caused quite a stir over in RealPicGAF's thread.
A new game came out this week...

:3

Oh yeah forgot about that.

Oh and I was talking about a major tournament. I know tournaments are held every week but I was talking more in line with a road to evo event.

Triforce drama is stupid and he does it every week.

Serious question - is Persona going to have any sort of community in a few weeks from now? So far this year we had SFxT, SG, and VF5:FS that had lots of "omgggggggg game is GDLK" only to lose all hype quickly.

Why do you think the other games lost hype so quickly? Is it just because they're new games? Or maybe it's because of something specific to the games that might not apply to P4U?

If you're expecting the game to be as big as MVC3/SF4, then no. The game is being picked up by BB/GG, so of there is going to be a community around it.

All those games you mentioned have people playing still playing them...

It's been #1 in Japanese arcades for a while now, right?

Japanese interest does not reflect American interest. If it did BB would have been bigger than Marvel.

No 2d fighters in the states will ever surpass the mindshare that capcom owns for fighters. Just like how 3d fighters will never be able to touch Namco's games in the states.

Oh, of course. But the combo of license + "simplified" controls + very popular Japanese community makes it look like it has a really good shot at sticking around a bit.

Atlus has also done a phenomenal job promoting this in the right places so far.

Don't post in OT and you'll be okay.
i've been posting there since i joined and i've never been banned. my one and only ban is from gaming. oh and simpsons gaf is best gaf. fgc gaf is way better than nba gaf.

It's true. Gaming is scary.

I like FGC and particularly (most of) MarvelGAF, though
you play marvel? lets play if you are on 360! i've never beaten a mod before. i think kagari might of bought vanilla but i don't remember her ever being involved in the community.

It's just hard to tell if it's just GAF getting ultra-hype for a new game or if people legitimately see themselves playing that game for months.

Doesn't have to be that big, just some sort of community besides online ranked grinding. Look at SG... the OT gets a few new posts a week and the few times it gets streamed nobody talks about it despite how excited people were at release. I'm all for buying and getting into new fighting games but I hate feeling like I've wasted money when nobody cares shortly after release.

Mumei lurks MahvelGAF, mentioned it in another thread. :P

Thoughts on latest Big Two:
- Fooblat wrecking Jago first game made me laugh so hard oh man. Raw level 3 on incoming Zero. DEFINITE mindfuck. "THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU JOIN EMPIRE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"
- MrPavySRK caught on stream AND at Big Two!
- That Flux/Noel Brown match made me realize that even when Marvel has timeouts, they're never tiring. Shit is intense right up until the timer hits zero. The volatility of the game aids in this sense I believe.
- Megaman Steve looking hella solid. Using his Crystal and Acid Rain to block all of RayRay's options was godlike. Great set.
- Moons went beast mode on Chris G. Both times. Him and Flux.. both people to watch in Marvel. Moons goes above and beyond with his tech too, he really knows his characters well. He made some fantastic reads all throughout the tournament and even got air grabs on Chris G.
- Dang had Arthur combos I've never seen before that allowed for relaunch. Sick stuff.
- There was so much tech in those grand finals, god damn. I learned so much Nova stuff. Moons and RayRay were playing like it was EVO GF. At this point I think I can say confidently Moons has the best Nova, even better than DragonGod's. The hit confirms from both of them throughout grand finals had me going all OOOOOH GAW DAMN.

I'll be playing Persona for awhile. Its the most fun I have had since 3rd strike. I think it will be bigger than the KOF scene. Hopefully atlus promotes the shit out of it and it be big enough to hold a spot for a few years.

edit

If its any consideration theres 152 pages on the p4a thread. And not to mention a neogaf tournament that happened already + a 360 one next week.

Yeah, but it was posted earlier than most OT's since it was for the Japanese release.

And it's 76 pages for those who use 100 ppp

Not like that stuff matters though

Flavor of the month hype means nothing. The real test is how the game performs in the scene down the line and when the OT is moved to community when most people don't care to venture there unless they truly care about the games.

There was a time when lots of people acted like they cared about Tekken, Blazblue, Skullgirls and so forth. Preview threads, early OTs, all sorts of news, all these people posted and put their two cents in only to abandon the game some time after it coming out.

well to draw the comparison.

BB:CS2 has only 154 pages
SG has 68
BB:Ext has 41
SC5 with 90
and the official tekken thread has 95

If there is any correlation between thread activity and level of interest.

And I'll agree with this.

You have to factor in all iterations of the threads. For Tekken as an example, you have to factor in the original T6 thread as well. AAK made the regular Tekken OT well after most people stopped caring about T6 and Tekken in general on GAF. I wanted to run a T6 tourney with Mad Catz sponsoring but there was less than half of the people interested in what I would consider the minimum amount of participants to run a tournament.

ah did not see/know that. Hopefully the interest for P4A stays. CDjr just recently picked the game up but I think he is approaching the game wrong (he claims akihiko sucks...lol?). Other members of the community are trying it. I think Justin and Ricky both want to try out the game but have been traveling this week.

It always seems the opposite to me. Especially since race and gender are daily topics in the OT. There's almost always one person who blows his lid and gets banned.
Indeed

The OT brings out the worst in people because of the range of topics being discussed. I rarely have to worry about gaf members outing themselves as homophobes, religious nuts, misogynists or anything majorly bad when it is gaming side. That is why I prefer gaming. Nerds are lower on the totem pole of discrimination and hate. I also don't want to go to the OT and see that guys I talk with are actually hateful people. That is no fun.
When are the Evo games announced? By then we'll see if a significant amount of people give a shit about the game or not.

I've posted in OT for years, mostly Sports threads. Only been banned once. Don't even remember why.

I am never in fear of being banned for what I post. I guess I am too reasonable/lame.

I've seen some ignorant ass nerds.

Yep, my sole ban came from Gaming side too.

And you're not going to get mod powers from beating a mod. :P

Project M legit stinks.

I think I remember seeing you banned during that SFxT cross assault fiasco happen. Could of been sephii, not sure its been awhile.

one thing i'm noticing is how strange the team selection are all around the country. Aside from a few random people, nobody uses Strider. Meanwhile Wesker+Doom are all over New York while you see a lot more Sentinel on the West o_0

naw, never been banned on gaming side. That thread was contentious though :-)

I think I got banned for saying something about Big Ben like 7~8 years ago, I think. I do hate the Steelers, lol.

Oh yeah. Plus New York has a bunch of Haggars and Morrigan/Doom players, while Texas has all those Zeros.

Strider is most prevalent in Norcal, plus Clockw0rk. Those guys know how to use Strider effectively, and I think it's something a lot of the East Coast would have trouble with. I believe Chou from Japan runs a Strider team too.

Seems like a lot of people agree Strider is a really good character, but in a game where TODs are not just for MarlinPie anymore, the reset-dependence of the character seems less appealing to most I guess.

The geographic distribution of characters is certainly interesting. The rise of Haggars in the East coast, Spencers in the West, etc. I think that's really cool.

Chou's original team was Strider on mother fucking POINT!

Norcal is also what Magnus called "Land of the rising Varja." Houston is land of the Zero's, but Socal is slowly catching up with more Zero and Dorm post EVO. Also was once land of the Magnus.

EC is land of the Wesker, and I have no idea where all the Vergil are but they seemed spread out everywhere.

I should be more specific. Project M is fun to play, but from a design standpoint it's completely terrible. There are clear biases towards the Melee characters (which is to be expected, since it's called "Project M" after all), and the Brawl characters either got changes nobody wanted/asked for, or had their playstyles and movesets changed so they play nothing like their Brawl selves.

In short: Project M is for Melee enthusiasts, and Brawl fans can hit the bricks.

I guess the big thing with Vergil is that on the EC I see a lot of anchor Vergils who throw up swords+xf3, while WC is more point/second.
