Saudi Arabia is planning to develop a women-only industrial city aimed at giving females greater independence while still abiding by Sharia law.
The development, which will be built in the Eastern Province city of Hofuf, is set to open next year, according to The Guardian.
The industrial site will be designed "for women workers in environment and working conditions consistent with the privacy of women according to Islamic guidelines and regulations," the Saudi Industrial Property Authority (Modon), responsible for developing the city, said in a statement.
The city, initially proposed by a group of Saudi businesswomen, is expected to create nearly 5,000 jobs in textiles, pharmaceuticals, and food processing industries, as well as women-run firms and production lines.
"I'm sure that women can demonstrate their efficiency in many aspects and clarify the industries that best suit their interests, nature and ability," Modon's deputy director general, Saleh al-Rasheed, told the Guardian.
Planners chose the city of Hofuf because it is located near residential neighborhoods, making it easy for women to commute back and forth from the city.

Woman utopia, how will this end GAF

I predict this will backfire somehow on the Saudi's.

Their reaction to rampant lesbianism would be hilarious. Their reactions would make for some great pic meme's.

The fuck...just let them be equal you backwards ass fucks.

What I came here to say, is kind of surprising the kind of dogma you have to have in your mind to think segregation is somehow a good idea towards equality, yet we see it happening, time and time again.

Sounds like something Gob Bluth would propose

fucked but i cant help but think this would make for awesome calender photos.

but yeah, this is one sllllllooooooow march to equality

Who is going to provide the security for this project?

Why does this concept make me think of a cross between a harem and a kibbutz?

And how does one pronounce "Hofuf"?

I'm interested to see what comes out of this.
What if this is the first step towards a industrial/scientific rebirth for the saudis?
But I'd imagine that any achievement or success will be herded into male powers.

How is it empowering? You can't be with normal society so we built you your own because we can't handle women with freedoms?

Figured if women could run their own city it'd give them a greater sense of independence, but yeah Sharia law.
I don't get this it's 2012 shit though. In some countries it might as well be 500 B.C. Just because Western Europe and NA made it doesn't mean much for the other 6 billion people.

If the city's development is handled according to Muslim women's demands, then it will be a futuristic exemplary city.

I doubt this is how it will work through. It will probably be more similar to industrial sites in China, with the difference being that there will only be women worker, and men managers. It's basically for women to have a chance to do jobs they would normally not be allowed to do since they would work along with men.

The project has been proposed by a group of Saudi businesswomen, said Al Eqtisadiah, the business daily, quoting the business woman Hussa al-Aun. She told the paper: "The new industrial city should have a specialised training centre to help women develop their talents and train them to work at factories. This is essential to cut unemployment among our female graduates."

If that's the way she found to help the women of her country, I'm all for it.

They probably have the best of intentions [while still being Saudi Arabia lol], but we all know it's just going to turn into a red light district.

We've experienced the Industrial age, arrived at the atomic age, just begun our space age and now we are in the digital information age where hundreds of millions are constantly talking and sharing information across the globe at near light speeds simultaneously.

Taking the concept of separate water fountains to a new extreme doesn't sound nearly as impressive or stimulating an event. Creating new jobs and a place for a minority might work out, but it's hardly a kick starter for "rebirth" of that kind.

Might not be perfect from a western point of view (won't ever be until they are also parading their women as sexual objects), but the Saudi's have it good in a lot of ways. The govt pays for everything, health insurance, their education up to college and even grad schools out of the country, gas is cheap, and there are no taxes. They also have one of the largest scholarship programs for women. The place is super safe for men and women. Yea, they certainly have some strange laws but so do we. We have all sorts of controversial issues (gun control, abortion, gay marriages, etc.) some of which seem completely bizarre to the rest of the world. Saudi Arabia has all sorts of issues with equality between genders, foreigners, and some other groups, but it's still a great place to live (if you're Saudi).

More like they are sending their women off to slave labour camps.. Fucking pisses me off that country.

I used to be friends with a few Saudi's over here studying in Australia. Never once seen their wives.. They'd come out with us and drink, smoke and party all night blowing shit loads of cash at the casino while their wife most likely sat at home cooking, cleaning and looking after their children. They even slept with the other Chinese and South American students and bragged about it to each other.. Fucking disgusting treatment of women. That being said, although I strongly disagree with their values and morals I still had a ball partying with them.
