I want to give Dark Souls one last shot. Help me.

Working on it. ;) After several hours, I managed to polish off 4-1. Brilliant level design there. Now I'm back to 2-2, a level I really can't stand. Can't really use the dragon sword there (because of its fire effect) so I've switched to the weapon I picked up in 4-1, which is almost as good.

I'm actually a little scared of Dark Souls because the reviews I've read imply it's even harder and in some ways, cheaper. Demon's Souls strikes me as being difficult but (usually) fair.

Naw don't listen to that crap....both games have a way for any player to get by the bosses, not the least of which is to simply summon help....for demon's the whole game opens up once you finally kill the boss in 2.2. whatever you do, don't lose the soul you get there....with it, you can unlock better weapons choices and even some good spells etc. that you won't have access to otherwise....the soul of the boss in 4.1 can be converted to a pretty good weapon iirc....but you need Ed the blacksmith to do it for you and he wants the red hot demon soul first.

You may want to equip a bow and do the first part of 4.2.....lots of souls to accrue there

Just booted up Dark Souls after six months of not playing it. Downloaded the update, and what the fuck? Did they nerf the Thief's roll ability? She just kind of falls on the ground now and does a slow, weak roll.

So I quit and started a Pyro just to see what they're like, and the Pyro rolls better than my Thief!!

What the fuck?

I never tired the thief and I assume the armour is light.... but if the equip load is affected (like you add a bow or a shield to the mix) this could easily put you over the <25% for speed rolls.

Somber Souls, is more like it; or maybe Somberasfuck Souls, but that might not have gone down well from a marketing point of view.

And you are correct in advising me to be a team player, 2AdEPT. I've just never been one for co-op in any game, so I've avoided, but I think it's time I made my foray.

Yeah!!! Down with somberness and on with jolliness....make sure to learn and use the gestures....this is half the fun of co-op for me....bowing, praising the sun, WTF'ing, and face palming are my favorites. My first time through dukes archives and the crystal caves I got a Japanese helper with me....he pointed out all the chests, pointed up, pointed down, its like he could read my mind...then afterward I tried to say thanks in English but he couldn't even understand that much in English....just got a bunch of Japanese in reply! lol.

a note on helping with O&S (although you can go back and help on queelag or golem if you are not too insanely leveled) is to divide and conquer....look to see who the host is going after, and if by yourselves you go to the other guy and not waste your stuff but just wait until the host kills their adversary...then gang up on super whoever. If there is more than one helper or solaire plus one other, you can help the host while the other phantom or solaire keeps the other boss busy....or if you are the odd man out just toy with your boss until they kill theirs.....your boss will get full health regardless so don't waste too much effort on him.

I've gotten to the boss in 2-2 and almost killed him but he cornered me and that was that. Very unfortunate. ;) I appreciate how many of the levels (2-2, 4-1) have shortcuts you can use to get to the boss faster, especially handy if you're going to die there multiple times.

I'll give 4-2 a shot. Haven't been there yet.

I hit darkroot again tonight with the soapstone. I kept helping people with the wolf, accumulated over 160,000 souls when all was said and done and my Xbox message box was filled with thank you messages. At least this game attracts a more serious or friendly gamer.

I remember in Demons Souls I got so fed up with those gargoyles. I was ready to throw the towel in. It was impossible. I walked to the mist and started randomly shooting arrows through it. To my surprise the arrows actually penetrated the mist. I went and bought more arrows, came back and laid the cheese down heavy on that boss. Whatever.

I did that too. Don't remember if I did it the first time, but I definitely did that on NG+. Felt a little bad about it but I definitely didn't care. Did the same thing to Old King Allant

This. So much. I'm okay with grinding away at something in a game, but after a significant number of deaths at the hands of O&S, everything just felt so bleak and so lonely. I was looking at the architecture of Anor Londo and just thinking, "fuck me, this place is depressing; so empty and stark". It's a sadder landscape than the many deliberately bleak areas of the game in many ways.

And then I thought about how for every non-hostile NPC you come across, thousands bent on your death have fallen by your sword before then. And even then, it's not like the NPCs are rays of light shining into the darkness, illuminating your soul with hope and the virtues of human kindness and nobility. No, the majority of them are sarcastic assholes, pitying your very existence and chuckling sardonically as you walk away.

Somber Souls, is more like it; or maybe Somberasfuck Souls, but that might not have gone down well from a marketing point of view.

Spoken like a true pro! You could give up on O&S today and never touch the game again - you'd still be a champ in my books for this post alone.

Anor Londo is even worse when you think that it was once a thriving city, where mortals and giants and gods engaged in jolly copulation. The fact that you're only in one part, high up above the main city gives you a great sense of scale as well... Now the only sounds are the spiral lift's metal squeak and the incessant chink of the blacksmith's hammer. It is just very, very empty.

Love your description of the NPCs as well. The ones you start to have a glimmer of hope for don't end too well, either. And by that I mean their stories are more grim and depressing than any grind if you manage to see them through to the end. Thinking about it now, probably the nicest and well-off NPC is Andre (if you discount his eternity of forging weapons for undead pilgrims). He's got such a great voice as well - plus he's one of the few who genuinely laugh.

But I love that. It's the total anti-thesis to the "brave knights being epic and saving the day" fairytale. So great, and every time I see this thread I want to keep playing.

I am currently running back and forth between andre and the giant blacksmith creating special weapons out of boss souls...have the dragon slayer and butterfly horn spears as well as the great lord greatsword. still need to kill Sif and create my (true)great sword or great shield.

question about big hat logan: so after saving him in the ng+ run i went to him at firelink and bought the 1 spell i didnt already have from him on the previous playthrough. he then took off to the archives, did I need to buy all his spells even though theyd be duplicates or am I still on track to buy what he will sell in the archives and then ultimately kill him later? I've never completed his line of interactions because ive never gone all out on his spells and this time I want to!

you should be fine....the time to clear him out is when he is sitting in Duke's in the library...IIRC you must buy all items in order to spawn the final process whether you already have them or not..

Yeah I heard about this, didn't actually do it though (my character didn't use a bow).

First thing I tried in Dark Souls is to try and shoot through the fog lol, didn't work. The arrow gets stuck in it.

thanks....is there a certain event that i need to work around in conjunction with when i buy all his spells?? or from here on I'm good to simply buy all his gear then when I do I'm all set?

Yeah, I'm a dummy haha. I must have equipped something before saving months ago, and so I reworked my equipment and I can roll just fine again! :)

On a side note, speaking of the Thief class, will my character eventually be able to do that over-the-head flip/dodge move that those hollow thief fuckers in the Undead Burg/Parish can do?

as you are aware form doing it once before you need to die on seath first...but you can use one of two rings (forget the name sorry ...one of which also cures curse) to save your souls and humanity...also recently realized it works to permafreeze your bloodstain if you forgot to put it on after the fact....but other than that there is no special event...either you save Logan by gettting the key to his cage in the jail area, or you kill seath...either way he shows up in the library just prior to the crystal caves. Watch out for mimics!

Yes. and I wouldn't spoil it except that its almost impossible to know what to do intuitively and since you are a thief you WILL want to ensure you do it right. so maybe indulge in this spoiler:

In fact you can do it right away from the start of the playthrough by first joining the cat covenant in the darkroot garden, then talking to shiva just outside the door , then going to the waterwheel in Blighttown via back door using master key. Buy all his stuff first, then kill him and his body guard...bodyguard ninja drops the ring you need to roll like that...plus you get an awesome cut in equip load requirement...a must for any thief.

as a thief you will also want to get the fog ring...
you can trade a lantern found in tomb of giants or dropped by demi bosses in catacombs with the crow chick ....(HARD to do early as theif) or kill three hosts as part of the cat covenant for alvina the cat.

...and the slumbering dragoncrest....but that involves ringing both bells and no more spoilers from me I have already said too much!!!

oh man, f those mimics! thanks man, appreciated. will Logan remain in that library forever? theres nothing that will make him leave before ive bought all his spells right?

Help me with the Capra demon, guys. I heard running up the staircase would keep him away while I took care of the dogs, but he just comes right up. I can't maneuver at all in this place other than that.

Run up to the top of the stairs and then
head to the right. You should be able to get off the stairs but on something (top of an arch or something, I can't rememeber). The dogs can't get to you, and the Capra Demon will glitch and run back down the stairs to try and hit you from below.

Excellent. I shall play more this weekend! :)

running up stairs is only the first step...you have to kill the dogs first to have a hope at going toe to toe with capra. I suggest using a shield and spear...you are allowed to stab with your spear from behind your shield...get a good one with high stability for this .....the spider shield from valley of drakes, the knight shield from the parish or the hollow shield are good ones.

Another option is to skip Capra, the depths and the first part of blightown and use the master key to enter blightown backwards...this was the main event that the master key was "designed" for and definitely what the developers intended people would do with the master key...its a genius developers set up - and still a lot of people think its "breaking" the game? ....sheesh! Their is no secret path or path less traveled unless their is the illusion of a recommended path....which really there is not....genius.

coming back later and giving those dogs a taste of lightnign spear and melting capra with two hits of lava from the chaos covenant pyro was a high point in my second playthrough.

is there anyway to know looking at them in the menu the difference between the cursed and true greatsword of artorias? I'm heading to anor londo now with sif's soul and a broken sword handle +10...that SHOULD do it right? I already have the cursed sword(i know because i was killing the ghosts in new londo with it), so I'm hoping there will be some way to tell them apart.

bah, ya its obvious now that I have the true greatsword...awesome, this is a first for me...the giddy-ness of creating a new very cool weapon never gets old.

I did it, Gaf. I EFFIN' did it. Suck it, Smornstein. First attempt (after my brief hiatus) and with no help; pure solo effort. I'm pretty proud of that. It was largely due to upgrading my Lightning Claymore to +3, methinks. For some reason, it had not even occurred to me to reinforce it further. Anyway, it's a complete beast now.

WOO!

Can you guys recommend a good farming place? I'm at Anor Londo, before the bosses, and I want to boost my character a bit. Not counting the forest place, please. I joined the forest covenant and I don't want to break it to advantage of the farming there.

haha gz dude. This boss in some weird way never gave me trouble on my first playthrough.I cleared it on my 2nd try against big Ornstein. You just have to roll under his attacks and be aware of the thunder butt jump. The gargoyles and capra demon made me want to give up though. The first few days i pushed myself to keep playing because i wasn't going to let a game i bought for $60 beat me lol Also before the patch you never got humanity or homeward bones after boss kills, it was hell for me to travel from blighttown back to the surface.Oh and you should get the eagle shield if you don't have it, it's pretty beastly in dealing with everything.

The bonfire after passing the archers. The first one you enounter.Just go back there and farm the silver knights around the area with the ring that givesextra souls of mimic mask.If you don't have the Symbol of Avarice and your game is patched there's and easy way to get it in about 3-5 tries now.Use Lloyd's talisman when you first attack a mimic to put it back to sleep and keep checking it's mouth for Symbol of Avarice.

Congrats at doing that solo! I could never do that even though I came damn close. I had to try a couple of times even with two people helping me. I remember spending many hours being summoned from that little room downstairs to do that fight. So many tens of thousands of souls. It was the part of the game that first really made me appreciate the multiplayer aspects.

You are at an exciting part of the game. Enjoy!

WOOOHOOO! 2 u 2 but just think of how beastly your claymore will be when you get it to +5!!! or even worse if you went to +15 normal path and threw on Darkmoon blade miracle!!!! Or if you wish to kill gwyndolin instead you can go sunlight miracle (as long as you upgrade faith a bit) decisions decisions....I smell a couple new characters for you man...you seem hooked like the rest of us now!!!!

drop your white stone at the bonfire in the AL hall before the O&S boss and collect about 40-50k per run depending on level etc. Plus the extra humanity of course. make sure to learn the bow gesture if nothing else...it feels good to bow for some reason.

I still can't beat the gargoyles. Fuck man. And I finished Demon's Souls too :/

really isn't any reason to suffer for any boss that puts two enemies out there....that's open invitation to hire help...you can use up to 2 NPC's for that boss, one of whom is more help than the other, or hire up to 2 phantoms who will simply roll these guys for you.....that said you can beat them solo if you attack hard and kill the first before the second has a chance to gank you. If you go solo use pyro and the pine resin found in the burg. Cutting the tail off helps you as you can then go behind them and spank their ass like the bad boys they are without getting hit by the tail.

What did I tell you about solo'ing Oreo and S'mores with a Claymore? Good job. Though I would have preferred +10.

Ha. CHEERS, BROS. Making progress in this game feels so good; especially after hitting a wall of sorts. It's funny how each player struggles differently, too. I'm pretty sure I beat Crapra and the B-tower 'Goyles on my second attempt. And yeah, totally loving my Claymore. I think I'll take it to +5. I've also got a +4 Fire Murakumo and a +10 Uchigatana. Swish steel, yo.

So, Seath is a big wanker. I lost about 60k of souls there.

I really have to envy you guys using heavy and hard-hitting weapons. My dagger and shield combo means I'm basically dodging/rolling/backstabbing at all times like a bastard. It's fun, but sometimes I wonder what a pure melee/magic build might play like.

Zweihander and Dragon Bone Smasher fo' life yo.

Fuck this game tonight. With every fibre of my being. I've zero love for it. Zero.

EDIT: I think I need to start looking at this game more in a light of raw progress - i.e. simply getting through the fucker - as opposed to how-many-humanity-and-souls-can-I-stockpile progress, as once again, I'm left in the same spot I was 2 hours ago, but with ZERO resources; all because I fell off some fucking ledge. So. Painful.

So beat Ornstein and Smough and I'm not sure what I have to head afterwards.

What is the easiest way to get the item to level up in Blade of the Darkmoon covenant?

Yeah that initial death is annoying if you are carrying souls and humanity buthtese are built back up quickly by just helping others on O&S. You can farm those blue octopus things for humanity. If you hate losing your shit....just buy rings of sacrifice...only 5k a pop from the guy in the bell tower....never lose a soul again in tight spots (unless you use too many and run out :P) Yeah Dukes is easily the most frustrating level in the game for me....with New Londo a close second but at least it is short.

farm reprisals in the painted world by killing the bird-like creatures...always move forward and attack...never retreat...they will eat your face. you can wear the ring for invasions as well and double your reprisal opportunity.

Once you start hitting your stride and getting acclimated better to the game you'll acquire souls and humanity like nuts. Co Op and invading in particular grant you humanities and souls very quickly. While it does suck, it isn't as unforgiving as it seems.

I own a copy of Demon's Souls that I never played for more than 30 minutes (too busy when it came out, never got around to it) and I plan on playing Dark Souls when it comes out for PC in a few weeks.

Is it worth it to go back and play Demon's Souls right now in preparation? Basically, did I miss the boat, yet?

It's never too late. And from my own personal experience, even though there is no real connection between both games it really helped having a go at Demon's just before Dark came out. Just for the sake of getting the mechanics down alone, and and coming to grips with how the online system works.

Well I just popped Demon's Souls into my PS3 and was greeted with a message saying that they were planning on shutting down the online servers back in May but granted a short extension due to popularity.

Looks like time is limited on the game, afterall.

I popped in demons yesterday and I was greeted by how in heck did I beat this game multiple times.

Finally got my DS Platium today!

I got many chars on diferent lvls, and tons of soul, so i always have a way to reach your soul level range. If anyone need help i can CO-OP add me:

I booted this game up too (thanks to this thread) having put 30 or so hours into it last October. I quit at Sen's Fortress and went through there in the last day. At the Knight boss guy now.

I bought the onion knight armor and am having a good laugh. It's pretty decent though.

I forgot how much fun this game is although I know why I stopped originally. Too many new games (this will happen again this week with Dust, Sleeping dogs coming out) and the fact that there is so little progress at times. Oh, and like the other posters above me said this game has some great atmosphere but at the same time it can also be a weakness becoming draining, almost depressing. For me, anyways.

It requires a good deal of mental dedication and also, I think not thinking of the end game is necessary. Try to really play and enjoy it piece by piece. Also, it's very unique fantasy and appeals to a very dark, primal part of the mind. Try to appreciate how well realized that is. Elder scrolls is so please all in its art. Nords and werewolves? C'mon. DS is one of the most alien, fucking terrifying worlds I've ever seen. It's western in an alternate dimension sort of sense. It's familiar and totally unrelatable. You feel false in your armor; a sheep in wolves clothing.

I didn't beat Dark Souls, but I put in 50+ hrs ad got pretty far. It's one of the absolute best games I've played in years. It's worth stumbling for dozens of hrs just to soak in the atmosphere.

I don't really play any modern RPGs for the exact reasons you listed. I hate playing a game that isn't particularly good at anything. The level layout is so fucking good that it makes those victories worthwhile, to see how one piece is connected to the rest. The descent from rooftops to streets to catacombs to below is staggering in its shit-I-don't-want-to-be-here-ness.

I totally think its far up on the list of modern games to play. It has that greatness that only comes from the unbound realization of a single idea.

Right on. I'm gonna keep coming back to this thread purely for such description. How come you didn't finish it by the way?

Just started Dragon's Dogma recently - loving it for its charmingly janky, yet fluid combat/controls, and overall "campness" of the world and characters. It's typical high fantasy fare, but (for reasons still largely unclear) grabs me much more than Elder Scrolls or other "modern RPGs". Maybe it's that arcadey Capcom touch - I'm reminded of Monster Hunter, which is another series of theirs I love.

On the other hand, I love the Souls series for exactly the opposite reasons. The setting is still high fantasy, but in no way standard fare. You get plunged into this grim, unforgiving world, and crawling your way through is its own epitome. I think Dogma is my yang to Souls yin - ironic really in that the "dark" and "terrible" night in Dogma is (while a very well-realised dynamic) more of a frolic-y "oo-err!" sort of terror, rather than a deep-seated, mind-numbing, sanity-questioning one.

God, games are great.

Finally beat Ornstein and Smough. I got to say they were a pain and it took me a while to get a good pattern down for them and beat Smough first. Then I proceeded into the Catacombs and beat the boss there and down into the Tomb of the Giants. I really enjoying both area.

A few reasons. Well, two. First, Anor Londo has a small part that it so frustrating that I more or less rage quit. It just came at a time where I had played a lot in a short period of time, so it was kind of a breaking point.

Also, I had the game a few days or more early, so I ended up putting in most of my playtime before Arkham City released. I was excited for that and it ended up pulling me away from DS, and I couldn't just jump back in full force. DS is a genuinely intimidating game.

I want to get back to it at some point. Maybe when the DLC comes out. Is there a timeframe on that?

So I've started really getting into the game after not being sold initially. Learning how the online-systems work made the game much more fun. Summoning people is awesome, I wish I could play through the entire game in co-op. Also I picked up the claymore and the range it has made things easier.

Difficulty hasn't been too bad for the most part. I've had some deaths where I got lazy and just mashed the attack button instead of taking my time, but long stretches I've breezed through even without help from demons. Had a heartbreaking moment though, had gone through the depths and killed the Gaping Dragon or whats its name, collecting 35k souls and maybe 6 humanity. But I relaxed too much, thought 'Blighttown' sounded like it should be a safe place but instead was greeted by a douchebag on a bridge who knocked me off the edge. I cried a little. Especially because those souls would have enabled me to level Str and Dex enough to use the Black Knight Sword I've been carrying around for hours.

Controls still can feel a little clunky and the camera doesn't work well in close quarters, but still the game has me in it's clutch.
