Fighting Games Weekly | August 13-19

No it's not. How the fuck can you define "fun" for someone else? You can only tell others what you think is "fun" you can't tell me what game would be "fun" for me. It's fucking ignorant and it's fucking stupid. People have the right to play whatever the fuck they want. If you want to be butt hurt because your community is niche don't blame them for not liking your game. It's their mother fucking choice. Not everyone has the same ass opinion as your small minded brain.

Stupid mother fucker is stupid.

I just want to say that someone in fg-gaf exist that actually makes more vulgar post than me still surprises me.

They're a real thing! In my local scene there were a few people who would always trash talk SF4, talking about how none of that shit would fly in ST, but these dudes were barely around during the brief HDR days let alone being actual ST players at any point. VF seems to be the new hipster game to pretend to care about because its basically impervious to criticism. Just mentioning that you've played VF will get you the bitches.

Ignoring all the people who rip on the series for the cheesy VA and sound design, the control scheme, the simplification that's been cropping up since 4 and for not being more like Tekken, you're absolutely right. It's a shame that said people tend to make up 50% of the paltry number of viewers who watch VF streams nowadays. Hell, I'll take fighting game hipsters over empty chairs - chairs don't mash back.

We're not really going to have a 'hipster hunt' again, are we? Can't we just acknowledge that there are people who run their mouths about stuff they know nothing about, and leave it at that?

It was not the image itself that was the drama, you fools!

It was the replies and rants that soon followed! MWAHAHAHAHA

/rides off to the sunset

Son of a gosh-darned sassaffras root! Swerved again!

Any chance of GG coming back (to EVO) was dashed by P4A.

I don't know man, GG is a strange case. Jump from X to XX was big but too many updates afterwards(also Isuka) left a sour taste in many of us(and in our pockets). It arguably made the game relevant for more time. I, for one, didn't even get into accent core altho I must say that it was also for some real life stuff but I felt burned out on so many updates and playing keep up with the changes. On topic: this GG is not a re-release, it's an update, so that spices things up(not by much tho). I was counting on BB guys to go back/start with GG but with Persona already here that makes it harder. I wish people enjoy both and play both instead of just choosing one but heh, FGC hipsters. Anyway, it'll be a very interesting year!
/end pointless paragraph

no its not. people are going to play what they think is fun. just because somebody claims to be a fighting game fan doesn't mean they have to play every fighting game under the sun. i like boxing and mma but i'm not gonna watch every event just because i like those sports.

I think it's both.

<boring story time>
Back in 2002 I was a HUGE marvel head, like I was SO into the crack it wasn't funny, I almost completely quit all other games, including 3S. Then KOF2002 came. Our community here(lima, peru) got smaller and most people was playing 2002. The last KOF I played was 99(and I didn't liked it) so the thing that attracted me at first wasn't that it was a good or bad game(altho it looked more like 98), it was that there was LOTS more competition there and that you could get a challenge ANYTIME, instead of a (rare)random guy waiting for you to kill Abyss in MvC2 to try to learn the game if it wasn't friday/saturday night. It was only after I started playing KOF2K2 that I liked the game and the mahvel addiction came down a few notches(and I kept playing other games). Of course, nowadays online has changed this quite a bit(and it's great for some people), but IMHO still the offline heart and feeling > online. Gotta be thankful for streams now that I can't play a thing!
</boring story time>

TL;DR version: You can play the games you like, but without competition and a community your interest will fade after beating the AI for the Nth time.

O yea, I think CVS2 is boring as hell and alpha 3 shits all over it. Get at me people! ;)

I'm ok with your post, I like both games. I don't really know why people that play diffferent games can't get along. It's one thing to dislike one game, it's another to shit on a game to make a point about how better "your game" is.

PS: sorry for the rants but it's been a while since I posted more than a sentence :p

Well I'm new to GAF eventually this nice shit going to turn me weak sauce. Plus it's not like I'm attacking anyone directly. The old me totally would have (trust me I really wanted to!).

I'm just sick of this community crying over stupid shit. If people want their scene to grow they can take the positive route to promote it (which a lot of people do). For example the Super Arcade P4A tournament last night.

However there is always that one idiot that cries "BLAH BLAH BLAH no one plays the game I want, everyone else is an idiot because they don't play the game that I like." And this shit works both ways. Capcom players making fun of other games for being stupid, anime etc.. and other games making fun of capcom players saying shit like Johnny Rage or whatever the hell his name was.

Give me a break...

:O

Thing is, FGC hipsters don't play the games they "adore". They just talk about them. And it's not about a "hipster hunt", it's about doing a proactive thing, i.e. play.

Biggest issue is all the people who love VS, MotW, or VF yet if you go to GGPO, the rooms are always filled with the same 10 people. Those 3 games are the SRK favorites but no one will play them.

Doesn't matter cause RB2 is still the best fighting game SNK has put out prior to the new gen games released!

Best games of this gen:

1) Final Showdown
2) AH3
3) KoFXIII

I love watching and talking about marvel, but I don't enjoy playing it all that much. I don't live anywhere near a city with a tournament scene.

There are lots of games like that.

I don't think I am a hipster or a bad person.

I've been retired for a while so I would be on the same boat, but for context, please read my original post HERE for my definition of FGC hipster.

Also don't forget to vote for LordKnight ＼（ ＾ヮ゜）＞
Vote for what exactly? What games will he be playing if he gets voted in?

I thought I'd want to use it like that when playing on stick, but it turned out that because I learned it on Dreamcast, I had just been using a "claw" on the pad (and ignoring one assist button) and so it was way easier to transition to the other layout.

I don't know what others MVC2 layout is, but mine is:

L-H-A1
M-S-A2

I tried the default, but it just felt to uncomfortable for me. My hands were so used to having the assists at the ends. Didn't feel like putting in the time to adjust to the new layout. God bless consoles and button configs!

Enzo:

How is one handicapping themselves if they use the MVC2 layout? What would I be missing out on?

On a lighter night, I got Tekken Hybrid for $10. Playing dat TTT2 baby!

For a new player getting into MvC3, the default layout is so more intuitive IMO than adjusting to an adapted layout for a previous game with a completely different control scheme.

Here's my issue with the term: if it's anything like how the word "hipster" itself is used, people are going to start throwing it around at anyone that gets on their nerves, which will just stifle discussion across the board. (And please, please don't use this as a launching point for the hipster debate, guys; we can't afford to make the thread jackknife all the way through.)

Yeah, it's a little annoying that people idolize some games but never actually pick them up. I play a bunch of dead games, and after fighting the same 4-6 people month in and month out I get a little irked when people praise the game but then say "thanks but no thanks, I'll just watch". But the truth of the matter is that some people do prefer watching over playing, just as you mentioned in your original post - and it's too hard to separate them from the trolls to make it worth calling out the latter. And even if you could, it's not like they're going to stop talking trash about the popular stuff, or start playing the games they gush over, out of shame.

I just don't want the "FGC hipster" to be a catch-all boogyman when it comes to making criticisms of a game, talking about niche stuff, discussing hype and the aftermath of hype, etc. I don't know how to put it any better than that.

That being said, I don't really want to keep talking much about it. I already fell for Chavelo's trap, and sardonicisms are a part of Chavelo's game.

People play what they want to play. Not because "pro's" are playing it. I love watching high level Marvel and SFIV but I'm terrible at both games.

I don't really care if the FGC rejects P4A because of it's mash AAAAAA combo strings and unblockables. I'll still play it because it's fun.

I love how wizard is crying about stuff that exists in the same games he promotes. Sounds like he's getting hammered online.

SRK tech talk is one of the greatest places on the internet. And the buy/sell/trade forum is great for deals every now and then.

I just want to make sure people still go there for the important things, and should ignore about 90% of it.

Don't you find that ironic with all of your "09'er" stuff?

I almost feel like you could get the tag:
WesternHeretic
Putting the SRK in GAF
Well, to be fair all his stuff on 09ers and stuff has been describing what's been going on on SRK and the history behind the term more than telling us we're '09ers and our opinions should not be considered. Which is pretty equivalent to calling someone a junior here (which is incredibly stupid, too).

Why does NYC hold on to strictly to capcom games?

Only KDZ,NYC FAB and Fighting GM come to mind in the 3D department?

Pro-tip: When looking to find out about and find people to play games you like with or events with said games go to sites for said games. SRK is a very heavy favored capcom fighter site. Following mvc3 players and sf4 players and wondering why they don't play something you like is silly.

^^ Pretty much. If I want to discuss something Tekken related, I wouldn't go to SRK even though technically it's supposed to cover all FGs... I will go to Tekken Zaibatsu.

Maybe most people play Capcom games since those are the ones they find most fun. It doesn't hurt that they hit the jackpot with character design in their fighters. Being familiar with a fighter and it's characters is a big selling point and is why MK and Tekken sell very well even if their NA tournament community is smaller. As much as I love the genre, I'll often gravitate towards the games that both rl and online friends want to play. It's a lot easier to sell friends on games with characters they recognize.

Yeah Racial Stereotypes is jackpot character design for sure :lol

Funny, I think the SF characters lost their luster 10 years ago. *shrug*
