Here's the thing I don't get with the Brony fandom...

Adventure Time has all of the qualities that Bronies praise MLP for, yet it doesn't have the sick/almost sick, obsessive fandom that festers around MLP. Mature Adventure Time fans seem pretty much well adjusted, and don't define themselves through their enjoyment of that show.

What is the missing ingredient that causes the unsettling creepiness?

Fucking love Adventure Time. I talk to my friends about it way more than MLP. Fun fact: did you know that the name of the land they live in is 000, not Ooo? Considering how Adventure Time is set in a post apocalyptic world, there are some ridiculous theories on the implications of this.

At the same time, the online community is lacking horribly compared to ponies. The fan art, stories, comics, games, etc. etc. are way beyond anything AT fans have pumped out. It's not that I'm not a huge AT fan, it's just that there's a lot fewer people out there to discuss it with.

The unsettling creepiness is probably you being judgmental about what other people enjoy. I did that all the time in grade school.

From what he's said he seems to greatly prefer bronies, and based on earlier comments he does not come across as somebody who'll pander to a crowd.

Should watch his talk at this convention. He dodged every question about his character and the show. After 30 years of Trek Conventions, the guy knows how to pander to a crowd perfectly.

You are way too defensive.

AT doesn't need fan material to be awesome

a lot of the stuff posted for MLP is wish fullfilment type stuff which is definitely filling a void of sorts

If we limit ourselves to just the creepier side of the MLP fanbase I'm going to say that Adventure Time doesn't have a large cast of female characters for fans to frequently render as attractive young human women. Or, slightly less specifically, people don't wish that they could be friends with the Adventure Time cast in real life.

uh.. about that

Fascinating. Appears the US has managed to create a bona fide homegrown cult movement analogous to the Japanese moe phenomenon.

Eh, all fandoms are the same.
The only difference is the size and exposition.

I watch the show with my little cousins, it's not bad. In fact it's better than everything else they force me to watch.

Personally I find the Brony stuff to be laughable, and the last thing I want is to hear a mouth breather defending the virtues of a cartoon that teaches life lessons grown people should know already. But meh, whatever floats your boat

This on the bolded, except the show is rather dreadful.

how is that creepy

Japan does it better again

More than half the Adventure Time fan art I've seen involves sexualizing Princess Bubblegum and Marceline in some way.

Preteens or ponies. Preteens or ponies. PRE-teens or PO-nies.

I'm just glad the world will be less populated by this. We should export MLP everywhere.

Save advice I guess. My argument that video game/anime fans weren't the same as bronies is probably due in part of my own insecurities about like both anime and video games.

Theyre pretty much the same sort of fanbases.
Not really much difference. But that really means they should also get along with each other.
I see no reason why they cant.

Which fan bases are the same? Anime and video game fans, or oth of those and bronies?

Adventure time isn't Y7, and has elements that are honestly surprising to see in a kids cartoon. I think its that, and it doesn't have an all girl main cast (which im assuming is a large part of why there is so much perverse shit out there).

Adventure Time is way too self-aware, and has too many nods for an assumed audience of older geeks to pick up on. Basically, it's not a blank slate onto which fans can really project themselves. And as Tech said, you uh, don't really want to hang out personally with most people in Adventure Time. They're goddamn crazy.

MLP is a much more typical cartoon, with a more generic setting. Very easy for people to take it and adapt it to their own desires. I said it before but, MLP really is westerners getting their very own Moe for the first time. The characters are designed for the viewer to relate to them personally and sort of be imaginary friends; for the sake of the children who are supposed to grok the live lessons being played out.

It's grating to hear constant insults about people you're in a relationship with. Not sure if you've even been in the situation, but yes, I am going to go out of my way to say when I disagree with people when that occurs. Sorry if you feel that's inappropriate.

I was there. It was hilarious. That is one man who does not give a crap about ponies but the fanbase loves him anyways.

*edit*

Oh, thought it was a different video. I'll check it out a bit later.

What?

Rule 34: If it exists, there is porn of it.

Why would there be a pony-specific rule or sub-rule?

edit:
Like Rule 34-4A Section C: If ponies exist, clump to them?

Yeah I shouldn't have said equivalent to rule 34.

I just meant if there was a name to the fact that there is a pony fanart of almost anything.

All of them.
However that does not necessarily mean a fan of one is a fan of the other. The fanbases are definitely shared by many people though.
People need to just relax and have fun.
Life is stressful enough without infighting between groups that are very similar.

It's okay to like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. It's better than a lot of anime after all, even if I don't care for it.
Sorry, I can't help but poke fun sometimes that's all.

Cajun, you're too lax. We need to get you mad about something. Like, legit mad.

Work used to do that, but it has gotten better.
Hmm. I get mad when my Saints lose a football game. There's that.

AT lacks an ensemble cast and a distinctive visual style. You can ponify just about anything and have it be moderately amusing, while applying the AT style to something else is occasionally decent but is less generally amusing.

In other words, ponies lends itself to fanworks more than AT does.

Agreed. There is nothing wrong with watching and enjoying the show. However, letting the show take over your whole life is incredibly unhealthy.

I'd consider spending a day there if it were in my city, because a convention for fans of cartoon ponies is charmingly weird. But I wouldn't shake anybody's hand.

Im sorry but thats just a load of bullshit
Adventure Time has an instantly recognizable style, and its ensemble cast is Finn and Jake

The main ponies of My Little Pony all have identical models, and maybe its because its made in flash and its efficient to share assets (or more likely because its easier to manufacture toys). But they're basically colour swaps using the same model, and thats why you see so many fan made ponies.

I disagree.

You seem to think you're arguing against his point when you're only strengthening it.
I disagree.

Adventure Time is awesome but half the drawings are unrecognizable as their Zelda counterparts.

The point was that the only thing distinctive about MLP is the base model that both the creators and fans recycle over and over.

Right. It's easy to make fan art of it due to the simplicity, hence why there is so much of it. Though, I see you were more basing your post on his first sentence.

Edit:

Wow it's late.

Forget about MLP and AT, Gravity Falls is currently the cartoon which fan following is growing exponentially.

Do I need to explain how laughable it is to call two characters an ensemble cast?

Do I need to explain why it's easy to modify characters that are similar to have distinct characteristics?

C'mon Uchip. I know you're smart enough to understand these concepts. Please don't make me talk down to you like you're dumb, we both know you're not.

uh, this dude is advocating actually killing people over MLP.
It's because we're so sick in the head, you see.
