Stupid Questions |OT| of questions that don't deserve their own threads

I actually think this this a great question that does warrant a thread, but I can't make those so.
How would one go about keeping the novelty in the things they love? Like for example a song. First time you hear it you're amazed if you're really into it. But a lot of the time even if you really like it, only occasionally can you feel the magic, lol.

I watch singing auditions; not only they have a unique voice singing those classics, but they often change it a little and it's perfect.

i.e., This timeless classic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VURNUtn2KC0&list=FLcNpACm0h2f1uHT-yOAso6A&index=22&feature=plpp_video

I also watch Glee for that sole reason.

Does anyone know of a definitive book on insects?

There are too many insects around to write a book on them all. Also, the field of insects is separated into a multitude of topics because it would otherwise be impossible to get a book done, or even carry the resulting book around.

What I do when I want to know about an insect is I pull out a reference like this (German, obviously):
xEWip.jpg

Then, if I want to delve deeper into it, or if the book doesn't contain a section about the specific insect, I go to the library and dig through everything they have. Uni libraries are best. Biology section, shovel out, good-bye afternoon.

An author I want to recommend if you enjoy reading about insects in general is this dead dude: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Henri_Fabre
That guy is the shit.

Maybe better suited for the Olympic thread but can I view the old 1992 Dreamteam basketball matches somewhere online? Or at least the highlights or something? I'm kinda starting to enjoy the sport (never thought I'd say that in my life!).

Does anybody know where or if it's possible to rent the Batmobile? I need it for a day.

I found a company called characters for hire that supposedly does it out of New Jersey but they haven't gotten back to me, despite multiple contact attempts (maybe because I'm in Ohio?).

Specifically the '89 Batmobile.

How is it decided which topics get sent to community and which can stay in gaming? There seems to be no consistency whatsoever when it comes to that.

The yo dawg Xzibit meme pictures, does anyone know what they originate from?

Also, since I now know why the M. Night Shyamalan pictures are posted, where did that specific picture originate from?

Thank you.

From the show Pimp My Ride? Or are you talking specifically from the internet?

Is it random or are DayZ, DotA, and a few others immune for any particular reason? Is it because they are popular? Wouldn't they deserve to be sent to community for that very reason? I just don't understand is all.

I've seen several TV shows lately that have the lead actor credited as a producer. Someone explain to me what that means. What does a producer on a TV show do exactly that makes the lead actor a good chocie for the job?

I think threads dedicated specifically to talk about a game (usually already released games) or a specific IP/franchise automatically get sent to community after 30 days. Not 100% sure though.

Was the Prong song "Rude Awakening" part of the soundtrack of some movie or documentary in the late nineties or early 00s? Listening to it I get crazy deja vu sensations. It's far from their most popular song either according to Spotify, so I don't think I would have heard it regularily on the radio growing up or anything.

Something that's been happening recently on my home computer...When I'm browsing the internet, there super short (but noticeable) moments of "hiccup" going on. Like a super short delay between actions - clicking links, tab switching, scrolling, etc. Any idea what causes that?

What about movies and television? That's my real problem. Especially movies.

That's just labor; you need to manually search. Go to Rottentomatoes, iMDB, random youtube trailer search, etc. Then find a cool source to watch it it for example, Netflix is a must for ANYONE with a TV. Netflix even says 30% of all users are not only streamers, but doing so via PS3.
I have Amazon Prime. With that I get part of their video service for free. Youtube has FINALLY opened a movie/TV streaming channel. You can Tivo/DVR to not miss a thing. You'd be surprised what's playing when. I once say an Alien/Aliens marathon on an obscure channel at 7 in a weeday morning! lol. Luckily, at the time, I had a DVR so I was smiling while having my coffee and reading the paper knowing that after work that day, I'll kickback to an alien marathon!

I found that some of the best movies I liked had an average score of mid 80s on popular sites. Some of the shows almost getting full scores were mostly better than average, but you still needed to appreciate the angle and stuff. I don't personally care; if I like a show, I like it. Some shows only have a season and a half (couldn't even finish their second season) but it would be some of the best TV I've seen. and sometime, I am surprised that a show is on it's 9th season and I really haven't been interested more than watching only one- maybe two- episodes of it.
Hmmm....It's a matter of taste, I suppose.

Why do some shows/films state who a specific person plays?

For example, at the start of Seinfeld, you'll get three of their names on with no character name, then 'Jason Alexander as George', and lots of shows do that.

Right to the point.

Need a wireless adapter for my gaming pc. When I built it I had access to direct plug in to the internet. Not anymore.

Because of this, I know NOTHING about wireless adapters. What should I get?

Could you write down your hardware specs? Also what is your memory and cpu usage (if running win then windows task manager)? Have you tried a different browser?

Usually some part of a contract thing where the actor can't get top billing but negotiate to be specially called out in some other special manner in the credits.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billing_(filmmaking)

An actor may receive "last billing", which usually designates a smaller role played by a famous name.[citation needed] They are usually credited after the rest of the lead cast, prefixed with "and" (or also "with" if there is more than one, as Samuel L. Jackson was in the latter two Star Wars prequels). In some cases, the name is followed by "as" and then the name of the character. This is not the case if that character is unseen for most of the movie (see Ernst Stavro Blofeld).

Are the hiccups ever long? What browser? Everything's up to date? Flash, Java, the browser

So if a game is a beta it gets to stay on the front page of gaming for however many months it takes to release the game? Even if that time period is a year+?

What about DayZ? Are mods immune to being moved?

How about playstation allstars, that's essentially the same thread as the smash thread except it's more about speculation, that gets to stay on the front page until the game is released?

Well something about imap not responding, it is only happening to select accounts. And instead of being transparent about the issue, google just leaves users to troubleshoot on their own for a problem that literally can't be fixed by said consumer.

Their only response has been that a fix is "rolling out" over the next week. Some vague bs. Their tech support in google groups just keeps regurgitating the same " In the meantime you can use the gmail app to retrieve your emails, and we appreciate your patience.". Even though the gmail app is essentially garbage.

Prob user error.
Probably not,

I don't really know for sure about betas and mods, you'd be better off sending a mod a PM to ask about those. As for PS allstars, I'd imagine the reason it stays in gaming rather than going off to the community sub-forum is because the game isn't out yet, so it'll stay in gaming until the game is released and there's an actual community playing it.

I'm going to make sure everything is up to date and check on my specs and such. I typically run the latest version of Firefox with no add-ons. And no, the hiccups last no more than a second (typically 0.5s).

What is the most well reviewed way to learn a language online?

I studied German for 2 years in high school, and did not learn much more than vocabulary, which is not all that useful. I would like to be fluent in it.

You should see if the same thing happens with another browser like Chrome so you can at least narrow it down to Firefox.

There's no good answer to this because if it's only online, there's no having conversations. And that's important if you want more than, for example, your high school's method of rote memorisation. Some people might say Rosetta Stone (it's well-reviewed) and on the outside, it seems good, but it really has problems once you get into it. On the other hand, there are a lot of good resources out there, both independent little websites and sites like:

http://www.deutsch-lernen.com/

I live in a basement suite and get free wireless internet. Sometimes the speed will be fine, but other times I can't even load a website. It will go so slow, that I won't even be able to download a 2mb file. Other times, I can surf the web fine. It's never incredibly fast, but at least it's bearable. Does anyone know why it slows down the way it does? I think my reception is fine, since I'm usually at at least 4 bars (out of 5). It seems to slow down if I try to connect to the wireless with another device, like my phone. Do you think it has something to do with the amount of people connected to the wireless? I talked to the landlord and they say that their internet is fine, but it slows down on every device I have, including my girlfriend's laptop.

I am in debt forever to anyone who can help me fix this. It took me like a half hour to load neogaf to post this and googling has done nothing for me.

With betas, the thread stays in gaming because its assumed there'll be a lot of news or information warranting discussion, so instead of having a thread for each major patch or bit of news, you have a Mega thread. Its better than 30 threads on cs go!

Also it could happen because of continuous updates of firefox. If you have installed ff a long time ago, try reinstalling it.

I saw that Netflix was coming to my country later this year, and since everybody talks about it I'm wondering how it works.

Do they have a load of movies that you can stream all the time or is it a selectable library? Do they have a lot of old movies or mostly new blockbusters? Will the supply suck compared to the American version of Netflix? (I've heard it does in the UK)

If someone could describe Netflix and how it works with a few words that would be helpful!

Why the fuck can't I browse the entire Netflix library on PS3. I hate finishing a movie and see recommendations that I didn't even know were there in the first place. So fucking stupid.

Last fm won't sccrobble tracks which are mpeg-4. it says that the ID3 tag is missing but it is now. I was confused for quite some time but recently I have notices that it only applies to MPEG ones.

Does anyone know how to solve this issue?

But Guild Wars 2 has been in community for ages now. There's no consistency.

It murdered the potential community for this game.

Turns out my browser hangup issue is related to Firefox. It works like butter in IE and Chrome. :\ Any idea what gives?
Looking online some people get results from turning off sync, but it doesn't always work. I use to exclusively use firefox, but decided to switch to Chrome. It took a while to get use to it but I don't regret it. I suggest you do the same. Right now the only problem I have with Chrome is that after watching too many videos (consecutively) the video driver or codec thing crashes. All I have to do is restart the browser. Other then that I have zero problems.
