Rumor: Apple to announce new iPhone and iPad mini on September 12th

Mini is basically a step backward from ipad 3. No retina screen, less powerful.

This is for people who basically can't afford ipad.

It's going to be a smaller iPad 2...which is basically the same speed as the iPad 3. Not sure where you get the "less powerful" idea as such a step behind. The performance is going to be just fine.

Resolution is certainly going to be the differentiator. Also, some might find the size and weight to be much more ideal on the smaller iPad than the current 9.7in version.

I can afford an iPad...and the 7.85in version is very appealing. I'm definitely going to get one as long as there is a 32GB version (and then hope for a retina upgrade in a year or two, of course!).

I think it's insulting people see a mini as something for people who can't afford an iPad.

It's only £399 you stuck up tramps. Act all superior when you can afford to buy a decent mac instead of your fucking cheap ass shitty Acer Laptop!

No, it's not. It's for people who want a tablet and don't need a camera, retina screen, crazy processor, etc. It is for people that just want to consume content mostly via the Internet.

They have a viable option in that with the nexus 7.

Wtf is the point of an iPad mini and an iPod at the same time?
Well...it'll sell millions just because it doesnt make sense so nvm.

lugging around an iPad everywhere can sometimes be a pain and the iPod's screen is a bit to small for intense reading/web browsing so something in between the two would be ideal.

Rene Ritchie is pretty damn reliable on this stuff

never heard of this person before. the only site I trust when it comes to all things Apple www.macrumors.com their track record is second to none.

Something still seems very strange to me. If the iPad mini will be around 199-250, shouldn't the touches be getting a nice price drop to coincide? Seems weird buying a much smaller device for the same price.

Would make more sense to be in the new ratio. a 4x3 7.8" ipad would still be too big. If it was in the 16:9 ratio, it'll be holdable with one hand and more useable.

It makes zero sense for new ratio. All apps would have to be re-written. A 4x3 one can reuse the iPad 2 resolution on a tinier screen and have it look better since its on a smaller screen. Cheaper, easier, looks better, and apps don't have to be re-written. It is literally the only choice.

Only magsafe lock device I own is some like 40 year old rice cooker. If this is a buying point for you, you prob should stay away from electronics if your destroying items.

I wonder what's going to happen with the Touch and the Nano

They will update them according to rumors.

How would a smaller iPad with a totally different aspect ratio to the current iPad make sense considering none of the current iPad apps would run correctly on 16:9? It will be 4:3 just like the current iPad and will basically be a smaller, thinner, lighter iPad 2.

I'll be willing to bet that the iPod Touch will be removed in favour of the iPad Mini, because they're going to charge £100 more due to the "iPad" label.

Thank you for that. The article really helped me understand how awesome this will be over my iPhone 4. Just imagining how thin by removing the non-metal width is cray. Hoping for better use of the new screen real estate sometime soon, though.

I really wanted a white 4S, but held out. I can't tell from the pics if the white will still look as good or better...hoping official pics will help me decide.

I'm REALLY hoping AT&T doesn't be a dick and force me to leave my unlimited plan.

My MagSafe has bite marks in it from one of my cats lol.

Me three. That's pretty funny.

No, that would make less sense. 16x9 would mean that developers would use the same UI from their iPhone apps, which means shitty giant touch targets(like you see in some Android tablet apps).

4x3 means that developers would use their existing iPad app UI's. That means you get proper tablet UI's, and no extra work is required on the developer's part.

It's a really easy decision for Apple.

I'm honestly thinking about breaking my contract early and getting the next iPhone since my 4S is about to be full.

I'm really hoping that AT&T won't be harsh if I choose to do so. I doubt I'll be able to keep my unlimited data plan but I don't even really need it. I only use about 250 MB a month (in part thanks to the Onavo app). I would like to keep my messaging plan since I don't need unlimited messaging. Doubt I will be able to do so though.

I doubt it, they still have very different target markets and iPod Touch is still a much more established brand.

US pre-order: Sep 12
US release: Sep 21
International: First week October

A couple of weeks ago iMore reported that Apple would be holding their iPhone 5 event on September 12, 2012. We've since learned that iPhone 5 pre-orders are currently planned to begin that same day, at least in the U.S. Release is still planned for 9 days later, on September 21, 2012. We've also learned that the second wave of iPhone launches, the ones in international markets, will begin in the first week of October, likely October 5.

The information on Apple pre-orders comes from sources that have provided iMore with accurate iPhone related launch dates in the past. The information on the international launches comes from sources that have provided our network, Mobile Nations, with accurate information in the past.

Looks like everything's just about locked up (besides a few software/hardware features revealed at the event). One month.

Man, I'd love to see a late September launch of the iPad mini, too. But I have a feeling at the most we'll get an announcement on during the iPhone/iPod event on Sept 12th and then it will launch sometime in late October.

I lost a Vaio TZ because the cord got wrapped around my foot and sent the laptop flying when I stood up. I refuse to buy a laptop that doesn't have a magsafe adapter now. Shame the build quality on them sucks, though. I have to replace mine every 9 or so months.

Do you take your laptop hiking to Mt. Everest or something? I have never had to replace my
MBP MagSafe adapter, including my first MBP from 2007. If I just clean them, they'd probably look like they were a couple of years old.

So I'm selling my iphone 4s and some fool wants me to send it to Nigeria and told me he paid 520 via paypal. I check my paypal account but I havent received the funds. I then get an email saying funds were sent and that it will credit to my account as soon as I send a tracking number to an email address (trackingnumber@in.com). I smell scam or is that standard procedure?

SCAM. I would only sell locally.

yeah, scam.

No, they want you to send a tracking number (which means you've shipped already) and then they will "release" the funds.

Bail out. I get requests when I sell things on Craigslist, and they are always to send to Nigeria. There is just so little chance that this could be legit.

Got a little too excited there lol. Any news on whether if the new iPhone will definitely have 4g LTE? I played with my friend's iPad 3 with LTE on and gotdamn it was pretty fast

ah, OK.

Actually, even if the funds had been accepted into paypal, I still wouldn't ship to Nigeria. I don't like my odds

They could pull a scam of not receiving the product (let's say the shipping option one chose did not force a scanned, digital signature) by saying they never got it and then get the money back via paypal dispute.

Really hoping for a smaller bezel on the iPad mini. It's fine on the normal iPad, but the Mini should be much smaller.

Day 1 on the phone. Day 0 on the tablet. No need to make it smaller. The current ipad size is perfect

The current size for the iPad is great. Definitely. However, for certain tasks and for some people, their needs would be suited for something just a bit smaller. Remember, this thing isn't going to be as small as the Kindle Fire, Nook tablet, or Nexus 7. It will have a larger screen and wider aspect ratio but still get near those devices' size range. It will look a bit sharper than an iPad 2 since the PPI will be higher while weighing less and being as thin as an iPod touch. That sort of device is still great for reading, gaming, email, browsing, photo and video viewing. Now, for someone who wants a tablet and still is aiming to be more productive with their device such as writing a paper on Pages or editing a video on iMovie then yes, the traditional iPad's size is much more suitable for that. This gives the customers a choice and is going after the segment of the population that would normally be attracted to a smaller tablet.

Do you know why the bezel is there and why it is that size?

Of course. You need something to hold on to. It's literally the perfect size for your thumbs to rest on. I'm just hoping that Apple can get away with a slightly thinner bezel on the sides of the device since you might hold it differently due to the size and weight.

What are we expecting spec-wise from iPhone 5? A5x or something more? NFC, LTE? Or is this mainly a design change?

If this shape is genuine then the bezel must be narrower at the sides assuming a 4:3 screen.

There's leaked or not diagrams which show a narrower side bezel too.

9to5Mac who has been dead on as of late say their sources say it will have a smaller bezel so despite having a larger screen it will be about the same size as the 7 inch tablets on the market.
