Rene Ritchie:

iMore has heard that Apple is planning to debut the new iPhone at a special event on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, with the release date to follow 9 days later on Friday, September 21. This information comes from sources who have proven accurate in the past.

The iPad mini will be announced at the same September 12 event, as will the new iPod nano.

There’s no question that Ritchie has great sources. So it looks like Christmas may be coming a little early this year — even earlier than last year.
Rene Ritchie is pretty damn reliable on this stuff, not to mention he is being backed up by MG Siegler who as well has his sources in Apple. It seems like this rumor could pretty solid.

New iPhone "5", new iPad mini, and new iPod revealed on September 12th for release September 21st? Big fall lineup there.

Wtf is the point of an iPad mini and an iPod at the same time?
Well...it'll sell millions just because it doesnt make sense so nvm.

Can't wait for the new iPhone, introducing a new iPad mini seems a bit odd though. Seems like something that would warrant an event of its own but then again it is just a smaller iPad 2.

Both are launching in the fall, would be overkill to have two events right after each-other.

Are you kidding me? One would have a 7.85" screen and be for web browsing and apps while the other would the be size of your thumb nail and be for music. They're extremely unalike.

When we can expect next Ipad? I'm still rocking the original one and I don't follow much apple news but I really would like to get new one. Mini is out of the question.

From all that we know of the iphone 5, I imagine it won't be met with the same enthusiasm as previous iterations. Won't stop it from selling like crazy of course. But with just about every carrier pushing the S3 as agressively as they are, I imagine buyers will put a little more thought into their next phone purchase.

The Nexus 7 is awesome. I sold my ipad (although we still have my wifes) but we are both fighting over the 7 for reading in bed.

A 7 inch ipad will sell like hotcakes if it is priced right. Although I think 7.7 inches would be a better size, I'm not sure how it would work with an ipad like ratio.

lol. You know how long it takes to develop these products? Everything launching this fall was likely designed well before Jobs stepped down as CEO last august.

Who knows! If Google and Asus can design a 7" tablet in 4 months, so can Apple.

But yeah, that's not really Apple's style.

Let's hope it's not plagued with hardware issues like the N7.

I still don't think 7 inch is a proper size for any tablet though. Too small to use comfortably for long stretches, too big to put in a pocket.

Oh, I get that about Apple's culture and this is where I think it's one of those rare times where Jobs admit if his idea is stamped out and he feels like there's a majority with the consensus on a product he'll let it have a go.

Just because he was involved on a product doesn't mean he had to love the shit out of it. Especially when he was sick...

If you read the biography he was surprise with the implementation of Siri in the 4s, so he probably had less say as his condition deteriorate. He was even said to have disliked the name Siri. The guy just let things go sometimes, eventhough he seems like a tyrant

I feel like this product is one of them.

I disagree. I regretted the purchase of the N7 for the first day but it is awesome. Great size for e-reading and great for games. Definitely gravitate more to it over the ipad and phone. Also a good size to use as a tv remote :)

I honestly am doubting the iPad mini purely on production terms

I mean wasn't the iPhone and iPad relase dates split to ease the production problems they were having? now they are going to release a new iPad the same time as an iPhone?

Hmmm

This mini iPad is supposed to be using very old hardware.

New iPhones and iPads compete for new processors which usually have lower yields initially.

You guys think the new miniPad will have retina display? At 7.7" it'd be 332ppi. Pretty impressive for that size.

So guys if the iPad Mini launches at 199-250 the iPod touch line should experience a pretty nice price cut right? They wouldn't charge the same amount for the iPod touch and stronger iPad would they? I've been looking to get a nice 64GB iPod

iPad mini is likely using iPad 2 tech which won't cause production problems, they been making that hardware since early 2011. It is how they will still keep their strong margins while only charging somewhere in the $250ish range.

Current Apple margins are 43%. It was discussed in the earnings call that the projection for the next quarter is 38.5%.

Kathryn Huberty - Morgan Stanley: Peter, I want to better understand the gross margin guidance for September, given that it's been nearly two years since you've operated at a sub 40% gross margin. I understand mix may go against you a little bit in the near term, but it should be structurally higher than two years ago, you have NAND pricing moving in your favor, and the products that you're selling in the market are relatively mature. So, manufacturing cost should be favorable. Can you just talk about the dynamics that are pushing gross margins down again in September?

Peter Oppenheimer - SVP and CFO: All right. We expect the gross margin as I said to be about 38.5%. We expect most of this decline to be primarily driven by a fall transition.

YAY cheap iPad mini's for everyone!

Curious to see what they do with the iPod touch. Really hope it's A5 equipped with the larger "new iPhone" screen and 512MB ram. I need a 64GB device as I've filled up my 32GB iPad 3 pretty quickly. Might just have to make the transition back to the smaller screen!

iPad Mini (old touch)
iPad (7-8 incher)
iPad Pro (current model)

You do realize that will never happen primarily due to the fact that the iPod touch does not run iPad apps.

That is impossible. iPad and iPhone/iPod touch run different verisions of iOS. The 3.5 inch/4 inch screens are incapabale of running iPad apps. They can't call it an iPad if it can't run iPad apps. And it won't, that screen as a completely different layout.

iPod touch is the iPhone without a phone plan, not a tablet.

There may just be lower margins due to the new iPhone using an entirely new manufacturing process compared to the past 2 years, maybe they'll use a processor newer than the A5X.

I suspect it will use A5X not a new A6. Apple tends to introduce the new chipset with the new iPad in the spring and then use it for the iPhone. I suspect they will follow pattern with A5X being introduced for iPad 3 and then used for the new iPhone and then A6 being introduced with the iPad 4 next spring.

And their "budget" line products aka the iPad mini and iPod touch will likely used last years A5.

That's my prediction if I was putting money down.

Oh definitely. The "iPad mini" is basically going to be a smaller iPad 2. And the new iPod touch will likely be a iPod with iPhone 4S tech in it. The A5 is still a perfectly capable processor.

iPhone assembled from parts, best look we have of the iPhone yet from the WSJ Thread:

Here's a look at the new iPhone assembled from actual leaked parts. It's likely the most accurate look at the new phone so far.

I can sit on the couch and use my Nexus 7 for hours and hours - far longer than I'd ever be able to use a 10-inch tablet.

Actually, it does indeed fit in most pants pockets.

Maybe you can, but 7 inches of screen is way too cramped for me to enjoy browsing the web. It works, but most webpages are simply not designed for a display that small, making you tap and zoom all over the place.
I guess it's fine for mobile webpages though, mobile GAF is great on anything.
