Rep. Todd Akin, the Republican nominee for Senate in Missouri who is running against Sen. Claire McCaskill, justified his opposition to abortion rights even in case of rape with a claim that victims of “legitimate rape” have unnamed biological defenses that prevent pregnancy.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in an interview posted Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

Akin said that even in the worst-case scenario — when the supposed natural protections against unwanted pregnancy fail — abortion should still not be a legal option for the rape victim.

Why are people surprised by this. The GOP congress in 2011 introduced a bill that would ban Abortion in all cases except for "forcible rape".

Its like a bad parody movie. These guys are just... comically ridiculous.

American People elected them.

it's the handshake afterwards. if the female body doesn't receive the all-important handshake after sexual intercourse she will reject the baby.

Todd Akin hasn't been elected for anything but a chance to run against McCaskill for Senate. She intentionally ran a series of Ads aimed at him that made him seem very attractive to conservative voters in the state and even though he was by far the underdog he won.

McCaskill was hoping for Akin, because of shit like this.

Republicans in the House in 2011 introduced a bill that banned abortions unless it was forcible rape. That has nothing to do with Todd Akin, and Todd Akin isn't saying anything new that other elected Republicans haven't said already.

Republicans in the House are offensively crazy yes.

So what's the numbers on his response to this becoming a controversy?

A. Says he was taken out of context.

B. Says McCaskill is trying to take the focus away from the true issues, the Economy.

C. Doubles down on the CRAZY!
