GOP set to adopt official abortion platform without exceptions for rape and incest

What the hell happened to the republican party...

Guess what... I would rather pay more in taxes than have an inbred mouth breathing bible thumper try and tell me how to live my life. Your financial platform goes out the window when you try and use the bible to justify your social ideals.

So the Dems add a gay marriage plank the GOP has a no abortion even in cases of rape & incest plank.

The gap between the parties is getting pretty big.

As comical/pathetic/politically tone deaf as this may be, I sincerely implore everyone who will be voting for Obama in November to not get cocky and to focus on campaigning and getting out the vote. As batshit insane as the modern GOP is rapidly becoming (or became decades ago), do not underestimate the stupidity/malaise of the average voter or the lengths to which the GOP will go to win.

I kinda agree with this. Republicans that are disgusted by what their party is doing really should consider another, more legitimate, party. Its like actively registering and supporting the Mafia, but saying you frown upon being tossed in the ocean with cinderblocks affixed to your feet. Yet, you still support it as a whole.

Right?

They seriously should be forced to legally rename themselves to the Fundamentalist Party, because they're not even following the 'Republic' part of the Republican name anymore.

moderates win presidential elections. At this rate, the GOP will never win the presidency again

the chilean right-wing parties have been doing pretty much the same for ages. Hell, abortion is illegal here: there's no exception. Not rape, not even if it endangers the mother's life (we HAD therapeutic abortion, it was kind of a grey area but it was allowed... then the right didn't want that and even tried to pass laws that punished abortion even harder).

This issue alone is why despite being slightly conservative in some economic issues I will never vote GOP until this nonsense is done with.

So their official platform will run counter to what Romney just said he'll do as president?

lol

lol, Mitt can't catch a break. He's probably thinking what's the best day before the convention to announce his flip flop so that it'll get the least coverage.

The party is already fragmented. You have the Tea Party, Conservatives and Moderate Conservatives. Then again the Dems have the Blue Dogs.

Honest question: how does this differ from their previous election party platforms? The OP's link states:

The GOP's abortion plank faces scrutiny every four years, and this year's document contains language similar to the platforms that were adopted by the party at their conventions in 2000, 2004 and 2008.

What's changed (if any)?

Seriously.

Go look up Anencephaly. Not safe for work, or life, and don't look at it if you're feeling sad.

The Republican Party would now force every woman with a fetus with that condition to carry the baby to term. It would die within a few hours of being born anyway, if it somehow isn't stillborn. The end result is the same, all they care about is that the woman is forced to pass a dead human out of their vagina.

And since they would require a penetrative ultrasound, the woman would be FORCED to know that they'll be giving birth to a dead person in a few months.

Great timing, will hopefully push a few fence-sitters away from them.

And this is why, sad though the situation is, the independent vote in a presidential election is both useless and a terrible choice. If you don't vote for the one chance against this, you're basically voting for it. A system that is essentially "Do You Choose X or Y?" has no recognition for your feelings or your principles.

I'm not saying it's not news. But given the reaction and the tone of the story, it sounds like something seismic has changed - I'm just asking what that change is.

Now we actually have Republican state legislatures who want to pursue such an amendment at their levels.

We now have a VP pick who believes the same.

We now have a Republican House that in 2011 said abortion should only be allowed for forcible rape

There are no more Republican moderates in congress.

There's no way this is true. I would say "unfortunately," but contrary to what public opinion polls suggest, most people aren't really against abortion. They say they are, but when one slips past the goalie in their own life... yup.

But I guess it serves to get GAF's blood boiling.

You know, moderate Republicans were once a band of people that I would (and on occasion, did) vote for; it's really too bad they're extinct. Go to help, GOP.

Republicans never win debates on abortion. They tried it earlier this year and lost big time, and now this Akin situation PLUS the platform is just icing on the cake. To make matters worse for them, Paul Ryan has co-sponsored bills that redefine rape in lieu of abortion. Amazing stuff.

This should be an easy election to win, but they're pissing it away by assuming the bad economy will make people put up with all their crazy shit.

They don't give a shit. I mean whats his name is on the board of science whizzes and he mentioned some shit about a doctor saying something like a womans body can get rid of a rape child on her own. None of this matters, yes, all they care about is what they want a woman to do. Lets not get into any of this science/health mumbo jumbo please. Its clearly not where this decision is coming from.

This is some fucking bullshit.

Any man that doesn't allow women to make choices with their own body is pretty pitiful.

Just playing devil's advocate here...

Who protects the choice of the unborn child? Doesn't that child have the right to live a full and happy life if he poses no danger to the mother?

So, contrary to data, people are against abortion being legal?

And, are you not familiar with the GOPs stance on abortion? They've always pushed to overturn RvW.

Sure, if it can live outside the womb on it own. Otherwise, it's strapped inside a full grown, fully developed, adult human being that has to take care of herself and already has a life full of responsibilities that can do whatever she wants to her body.

If society wants to make abortion illegal, society has to do it's part to 100% take care of the child until adulthood. Ya know, for the safety of the child.

As an non US citizen I don't know whether to laugh at the absurdity of the proposal and apparent lack of science behind it or feel bad for women most of whom don't see eye to eye with this kind of political sentiment.

What happens when the republicans win during the next term? Worse yet, what if Obama administration that only bares fangs for the sake of winning majority during the election and at other times more often than not espouses republican ideologies anyway allow this bill to be passed under a different name?

I'd have much more respect for the pro-lifers if they at all were willing to help pay the costs for the unwanted children they try to force into the world.

Also, that unborn child is not a person and has no rights.

I think calling it a "child" is a bit disingenuous and appeals more to emotion than logic.

This is also bad for men. If a woman gets pregnant and wants to abort, she no longer has the option. Who gets saddled with paying for the child? Well the father will be, with no recourse.

More financial shackles being imposed by the party that's supposed to be against them.

Start developing robo uteri if you want embryos to live.

Cuz children are just like parasites. Or cancer.

I was referring to "data" that says more Americans consider themselves pro-life than pro-choice.

And saying you want RvW overturned is much different than saying you want a constitutional amendment stating when life begins. WAY different.

The blame for this shit lands squarely on the shoulders of EVERY-FUCKING-BODY that voted republican in the last elections. How can anyone that claims to be a rational person AND still support this shit filled party?
