ABC today will announce plans to move Jimmy Kimmel Live to 11:35 p.m. ET/PT, bumping Nightline an hour later to 12:35 a.m., starting Jan. 8.

As a consolation prize, Nightline will resume a prime-time edition Fridays at 9 staring March 1, and will expand to 30 minutes nightly. (Kimmel has aired at midnight since February 2011, shortening Nightline by about five minutes and prompting the news magazine's first prime-time run last summer.)

Kimmel's show is celebrating its 10th anniversary next year, and the comedian's profile has expanded of late: He hosted this year's White House Correspondents Dinner to generally favorable reaction, and will host his first Emmy Awards telecast on ABC Sept. 23.

Even in the later time slot, his show has slowly climbed in the ratings, up 3% last season to its highest level in five years, while The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and The Late Show With David Letterman both lost viewers.

"Given the passionate fan base Jimmy Kimmel Live has built over the past decade, and the show's ratings and creative momentum this season, the time is right to make this move," said Anne Sweeney, president of Disney ABC Television Group, in a statement.

But she conceded the slot switch has as much to do with making money as making Kimmel happy, as The Tonight Show and Late Show are said to earn as much as $90 million a year each in ad revenue. "There is the potential for far greater upside over the long term with this shift, given increased advertiser demand for competitive entertainment programming in the time slot."

The move is being delayed until January to allow Nightline to capitalize on the presidential election; cable sibling ESPN's college football championship, culminating Jan. 7, will be used to promote the switch. But Nightline, which began in 1980 as a series of specials during the Iranian hostage crisis, has morphed from a hard-news single-topic broadcast, with Ted Koppel as its host until 2005, to a softer, multi-segment show that more closely resembles prime-time newsmagazines. It had faced cancellation at least once before, when ABC attempted to hire Letterman in 2002, winning a reprieve when he opted to stay at CBS.

But rumors of the slot switch or of Nightline's demise have cropped up for years, each time Kimmel's contract talks heated up. This time it worked, and his pact, due to expire in February, has been renegotiated and extended for two years. The show's title, however, is something of a misnomer: Kimmel has not aired live since its first season.

Never been a fan of the talk show format in general, but Kimmel has a lot of entertaining clips I've seen.

He just seems like a laid back and funny guy who doesn't take his job too seriously.

I always think it's super weird that we've somehow accepted New York as our gold standard when talking about late night. It's not 11:35 it's 10:35 dangit. And it's not just that for some rare one-off city it's that for half the country...

Most shows air at the same time on the East and West Coast unless they are live.

I think it's only the Central time zone that gets the one hour off schedules.. I always assumed it was because there aren't enough people there to justify their own broadcast, so you just get the Eastern broadcasts at the "same time" as them.

So "half of the country" won't get Kimmel at 10:35. Only the Central Time Zone,

So is Leno really doing so badly? I mean, I don't watch him since the Coco fiasco, but still. Jay used to be their "golden child". Guess NBC realized people are tiring of him...
or all the old people who watch him are slowly dying off.

He's getting a lot of tough competition now. Conan on TBS, Letterman on CBS and now Kimmel on ABC. He's always had the worst humor of all of them though. So generic and blah. Terrible interviews. Wait, this thread was about Kimmel.

I'll be honest, I've only seen Kimmel in snippets on YouTube whenever he does a funny thing like Unnecessary Censorship or those videos where parents eat all their kids halloween candy or pull some other prank on them.

He will more than likely kill Leno in the target demo.

Leno will keep getting all the old 50+ people though.
Really?

They currently half overlap. How does Kimmel do against him in that time slot? I honestly don't know. I had thought that Letterman and Leno had a wide lead over Kimmel with Leno in the top spot.

So is Leno really doing so badly?

He's getting a lot of viewers but him (& Letterman) are losing the 18-49 year olds. Each year the demographic has been decreasing for both. Most of Leno's ratings comes from 50+ year olds.

Letterman should be retiring soon (2014 is my guess). I don't know what's going to happen to Leno but Kimmel is definitely going to eat up the 18-49 year old viewers that Leno's getting now.

Kimmel gets about half of Leno's viewers.

Kimmel moving to the same time though is going to definitely have an effect, especially on the younger viewers. Time slots & lead-ins means a lot when it comes to late night ratings.

Kimmel is moving to an earlier time, and his lead-in will be the local news. It's a given that his ratings will boost.

NBC needs to learn from this. Kimmel was given the time to develope his audience and it's worked out nicely for him and the network.

Kimmel's got some great skits - Celebrity Tweets comes to mind - so this is fine with me. I tend to leave the tv on after watching the news sometimes so it'll be nice to watch something other than back-to-back news.

Are you implying the cental time zone is half the country? The eastern time zone dwarfs it in size of its media market.

Anyone knows which shows (Jay Leno 2012 08 20 Maya Rudolph?) contain the particular announcements?
(was it even announced on air?)

I want to see Leno's shitty face when he announces it :D

/nvm, didn't read :(

Joke post right? EST is half the country population wise, Boswash corridor, Atlanta, Florida, Ohio and most of Michigan.

I've always liked Jimmy Kimmel but after hearing his story on Marc Maron's podcast about how when he was a child his mother would pretend she was dead to make him cry gave me a new appreciation for the pranks that he pulls.

Kimmel's show is the best out of all the late night talk shows. Fallon is second.

Conan just tries to hard. His schtick is old and annoying.

I mean, seriously; you can't beat "I'm F***ing Matt Damon"

Kimmel can be kind of an asshole, but he's definitely really funny, and I think he usually means well. His mouth just gets ahead of him, sometimes.

Yeah, I'll miss Letterman. And I hope it doesn't affect Ferguson. Ferguson is perfect as he is and where he is. So I hope he keeps his spot. Because he could never do half the shit he does in an earlier slot. I guess the same thing happened when Conan originally moved to 11:35 too. People said he was watered down because of the earlier slot. Thankfully moving to TBS helped him get back to where he was now that he's on Cable.

But Ferguson.. God I love Ferguson. Who is going to replace Letterman I wonder?

And if Leno gets ousted, in the off chance that is, would NBC end the show or just find a replacement? Way too early for Fallon to take the throne.

Man, it feels like The Late Shift all over again. Wait, no, the Conan thing felt like TLS. This feels more like a sequel or spin-off.

I would love to think Ferguson would, but would his show remain the same at that time slot in terms of the gags and stuff? That man is amazing.

The time has come. Soon, Kimmel will be the true king of late night.

And I can't believe he has been on the air for ten years already. TEN YEARS.

well fergusson flat out said "hell no" a couple of times to hosting dave's show.
He also said he is guaranteed a job/show as long as Letterman has a show. Which makes me feel scared for when Letterman leaves. Will he still have a show? Does CBS hold enough faith in Ferguson that he can keep his show? I hope so. It really is something completely different.

Not really a Kimmel fan, but I'm cool with anything that hurts Leno's ratings.

Has CBS announced when Arsenio Hall's show is going to be on yet? After Ferguson?

I can't help but feel Kimmel is a total asshole for saying that. She comes on your show, and then you just shit on her like that.

I guess, but she was the one that called him out first. He was just trying to make a light-hearted joke referencing the only thing she is known for and she pulls out the "that reference is so old" card. She kinda opened herself up for his comeback.

Also, I'm guessing this was an interview that was forced on Kimmel by the network to help cross-promote Dancing with the Stars. So it's not like he was shitting on a guest that they invited on the show.
