When you consider how much they saved in not doing it and then how much more they made from the hype revolved around a community member's fix they totally made the right business decision... lol. Dark Souls gets more speak on the interwebs thanks to Durante's great efforts.

The dev wont really be "rewarded". If anything everyone will see how great a game it is, and how simple with just a little effort, you can make sure that all parties involved are somewhat satisfied.

Expected, all the animations are probably key framed to the 30fps, oh well, all I really wanted was custom resolutions.
