19 people shot in overnight shootings across Chicago

Again, there is no segregation. People are free to move anywhere they want. I know many different people of different races in all areas of Chicago.

There is no de jure segregation, but there is de facto segregation. Your statement reeks of "colorblindness"

his answer was perfectly valid. some join for protection, some join for companionship. you cant answer a question like that in such a matter of factly way. there's no single answer.

Well, sure like any anything in life that people do, people do them for different reasons but in this case if parents actually did their job a lot fewer kids would be in gangs.

Still not fully understanding this. If it's 75% at 17, what is the other 25%?

Some other weapon or device to kill someone. A knife, a candlestick, a rope, a wrench, etc.

75% of 17 year olds killed are killed by a revolver. The other 25% are by non-gun objects. According to that chart.

Really? Look at this topic? Look at how many people think we're a bunch of fucking cowboys just because of a shitty area in Chicago, and it's the same in every topic where there is a shooting.
That's just people. It has nothing to do with GAF.

Why because you have one opinion and i have another that happens to be the truth, therefore you like many others fall back on a stupid tag that isn't even true?
Because you attacked me for holding an opinion I didn't express, or even mention.

The segregation of the city is the main reason this crime thrives. I'm not talking about the racial segregation as much as the socioeconomic segregation.

This. Plenty of middle-class people of all ethnicities all around where I live. But not a lot of cheap places to live for poorer folks.

Hey guys, are the cities north of the city considered bad nowadays? Like North Chicago or Waukegan?

I used to like in those 2 plus Great Lakes in the late 80's. I remember taking trains into the city. Don't remember it being that bad, but I was young and not going to the south side though.

I do remember the gangs though, people use to talk of the vice lords and Latin kings when I went to school in north chicago.

Okay this is completely wrong. If you compare Chicago to a city like San Francisco, I think the segregation in the city would be apparent. How many black people do you see walking about Wicker Park? How many Mexican people do you see in Lincoln Park or around Depaul? Chicago is a city with areas that are well known to be areas with a lot of Koreans, Mexicans, Jewish people, etc. I mean Chicago has a China town....

EDIT: I obviously don't want to generalize because most of the segregation is based on community needs like family and churches as well as economic reasons. There's no strict Jewish part of town but in the area near my aunt's house you see a lot of "we support israel flags" and temples. I only assume there's a high concentration of Jewish people in that area. If you go to a Dirty Projectors show downtown would it be surprising if you were among the .05% of asian people there? probably not.

When I say this is an everyday thing in certain areas of Chicago, I mean it literally.

It's mostly gang-related.

This. For some reason it doesn't get much air time on the news nationally which it should, but these shootings in Chicago have been going on forever. I'm only 2 1/2 hours north, you couldn't pay me all the money in the world to live in Chicago. The poverty and gang related issues just continue to spread. And bringing the hood to the nice parts of the city will only make those parts of the city worse not better.

Isn't that what we should be striving for? Blind to a persons skin color? Again, you cannot call it as segregation. If a family wants out of a shitty situation, they will find a way.

Gun control means using both hands in my land.

Oh and I was listening to something on NPR a while back about the recent rise in gang violence in Chicago and IIRC it was closely linked to the amount of funding cut from the city's anti-gang unit or something.

Im a brit here that's travelling to Chicago tomorrow morning for an Internship. Not going to lie i'm shit scared after reading this...

It is not apparent, there is nothing stopping a hispanic or african american from visiting or living in lincoln park, etcc...now is that reality, for the most part no, i know this but nothing stops them from moving wherever they want to.

Your parents can't save you while you're at school or they're at work (if they can find it). I understand why gangs exist, but it's horrible that they do. I don't know if the worst parts of Chicago can ever be "saved" really in the way that Rio and its slums can't be fixed.

You are ignorant. I'm not trying to be mean but it's clear.

You clearly don't understand how things work. You grow up in the ghetto with shit schools violence all around you and no money. What the hell are you supposed to do? You see everyone else in a gang. People join gangs to survive. If the city wasn't so socioeconomically segregated things wouldn't be this way. It's sad but true.

Its less about race and more about socioeconomic status.
i'd say older teens join for money and to survive. lots of younger kids simply join because their friends join and the people they look up to are also gangsters. kids grow up admiring the older kids around them and if they are gangsters then its no surprise if they end up getting into that life.

Don't be, it is a wonderful city. Just make sure to ask people where specifically not to go in the city until you become more familiar with things.

Mean while Chicago mayor Rahm Emmanuel is focused on keeping companies like Chick Fil A out of Chicago.

The murder rate has sky rocketed in Chicago since Rahm was elected.

To be fair about the gang thing, alot of little kids are 3rd or even 4th generation Vice Lords.

So there are kids who are in the gangs due to their family being in there. Not sure there were driven there for protection or companionship, it is how they were raised.

However, the point mentioned on gang membership are the dominant way people enter gang life.

True. The gang members become revered or someone in their family is in a gang or was killed by a gang.

Where is your internship at? In all likelihood it's relatively central and you'll find essentially no crime at all in downtown Chicago. You probably won't even use the same trains (other than maybe quickly traveling around the Loop or taking the Red Line to the Loop) as the people who live in the areas most affected by crime. It's a sad reality.

I worked in the West Loop for 3+ years (just off the Clinton stop.. first outside of it) so I took either the Green or the Pink daily and the ridership was obviously quite different than that of the others I'd sometimes ride.

Dude, you're not going anywhere that's violent.

The hood has no internships.

That's about as dense as me going to some random place in London and assuming I'm going to find bad teeth and crumpets overflowing ont he sidewalks.

How am i ignorant, how about you explain that to me. I grew up without parents, i probably know this shit better then you could ever understand.
You can't just move. Where the hell do you get the money? You went to a shit school, with no guidance on how to be successful in life and you can barely get into college. No one is telling you what you should really be doing. How are you affording this move?

They've moved the "hood" out of some of the now nicer parts of the city. That's a silly statement really. If you live in the North Shore or Wisconsin as it sounds like in your case, you'd probably never encounter a gang member if you lived in Chicago proper because you'd be in a different part of town as them.

Feel free to ask for traveling advice here. I'm sure the Chicagoans would love to help you out. Don't be scared, be smart.

I'm not even sure how you "bring the hood" to a nice part of the city. Forced relocation? Government instituted low income housing in nice areas? Honest question, I wonder what plans people have for these sorts of things.

North Chicago is generally fine. It's still "big city" living, so not as safe as a small town, but I never felt like walking around at night there was a problem.

Its sad to hear this. I visited last year. One of if not the best cities ive ever been to.
Its not the easiest thing in the world to police a city of that size and population. 19 in one night is mental tho outright gang warfare.
Stay safe Chicagogaf.

So according to you, if you have a shit life nothing can be accomplished? GOTCHA. Boy, am i glad that i worked my ass off and have acquired a decent life, thank god you weren't my counselor.

That line made me laugh cause it reminds me of the line "PS3 has no games". =p
But its true, the hoods dont really have that.

Chicago is a wonderful city. You dont really have to be afraid here. Its not like there are 19 shootings a day

You clearly don't understand. You would be bullshitting yourself to believe that everyone could make it out of the ghetto. The system is broken. Some make it some dont.

My point of view is someone who grew up in PG county maryland and lived and have been active in Baltimore for a while now.

Just stay out of these areas. I lived in Lincoln Park for like 2 years, no problem at all, sister lives in River North and same thing. It's these South and West areas that are bad.

You clearly don't understand.

Again, i had no parents to support me. I was homeless for a short stretch of time, i was a ward of the state...yet here i am, doing good enough to live comfortably. How do i not understand?

MT, i understand some people won't make it...it has been that way for all of mankind, not just Chicago. Everyone won't/can't save themselves. However, there are plenty of others that have survived and thrived.

I live in Chicago and a big part of the problem are the projects and south side. There is not very much for these teens to do and they keep them in big buildings where gangs eventually take over.

Chicago spends little money on trying to actually help these families and getting them out of the projects and back into real neighborhoods with real jobs and hope. Sure they will give them free rent and food stamps but these places are hopeless and the kids are just a product of there environment.

Because everyone wont be you. Thats my whole point. I know a lot of people that make it. Look at Baltimore Polytechnic in Bmore. A lot of students go there and become great engineers. For everyone that goes there, there are kids that go to school to get 3 meals a day more than an education.

You guys talking about moving the hood to be good parts, are you talking a bout section 8 housing? Is that a thing in Illinois?

Here in California they do that in some places. There will stick the section 8 pods in a middle class part of a town.

I think they most take over old apartment complexes or buy random ones out.

I know by some military bases that has little pod housing areas off base, when they close them down, section 8 will take them over. Some people have huge issues with this in these places.

Why are you still going back and forth with this guy?

They have started to do that here over the last few years. As they have torn down the old project buildings they have implemented mixed income housing.

He obviously doesn't get the fact that we don't mean segregated in the literal sense. Obviously Derrick Rose lives at the top of Trump's new tower because he just pulled himself up by his bootstraps and decided "hey I wanna live downtown. There's nothing stopping me, I can live anywhere!!!!!!!"

I thought that's what they did with Cabrini Greens after they tore it down.

I don't know. I'll stop. I should have read the tag earlier. Some people will never get it.

Yep, my tag...such a weak excuse. I get it more then you could ever even comprehend MT. You just think that if you we're born poor you cannot change things, which is sad.

You guys are literally using segregation as a racial thing, which is pathetic as hell.

It's so sad that due to there being a retarded show of a presidential race going on, nobody can fucking mention a gun debate. We got kids dying in cities and huge mass shootings every month now and nobody wants to do a fucking thing about it because it's not politically wise. That's the reason this country never makes any fucking progress.
