I wish I had some Mr. Beef right about now. I know everyone from outside of Chicago mentions Portillos like it's some sort of essential but it's all about Mr. Beef.

I feel like we should have a dedicated Chicago restaurant thread. I've only been living here for a year, and I'll hopefully only live here for another. During that time, I'd like to know what's worth experiencing here.

Gun violence and youth. It's always been a problem and no one does shit about it.

I know it's a small percentage, but I didn't know babies with guns could be that dangerous.

I would like to know restaurants and hole in the walls in every part of the country just in case. I do know that you need to go to at least one of the Bayless joints in Chicago. I've never been to Alinea but it's near Lincoln Park. Really you can go to any Italian Beef spot. Lou Malnati, Uno...never really been a fan of deep dish. There is one super bomb ass Chinese restaurant near all of the vietnamese places...I'll have to ask my Mom what the name was.

Yea, I meant the actual city, not north side Chicago.

I was kinda bad back in the late 80's. I wouldn't walk around at night. Somebody smashed our windows in one time and wrote "chink" on the other one.

But I am white/Filipino, joke was on them! Haha

Was just wondering how it was now.
Abbott Labs has a huge campus in North Chicago that is essentially its own little city called Abbott Park (has it's own zip code). They were a client of mine and I traveled up there quite a number of times.. really only ever saw the places along the route to their campus and the Metra stop (Great Lakes) plus Naval Academy but it seemed fine. I'm sure it's nothing special but I don't think it's crime ridden or anything like that at this point.

Yeah, I can't read, and feel terrible. Seriously.

Re-read and realized I basically made fun of innocent victims.

That's what I get for perusing, ending up a jackass. Sorry.

There have been a lot more killings here this year compared to past statistics. The chief of police had a press conference where he brought up how "other people" were blaming the heat and high temperatures for the escalation, but he wasn't. Yeah right... Why bring it up at a press conference then buddy?

I do believe the warm winter and early spring had a major affect on those numbers. But the the reason why murder is so high in the first place is gang violence. The problem is they mostly happen in areas the people who run city care very little about. As long as the functioning parts of the city remain untouched by it, that is. But that is the history of this city. They built towers for people to live in, gave them just enough money to exists and went on with their lives.

Hell in general Chicago is extremely segregated and most of the time it's self imposed. But except for certain areas it's safe to go most places(you would want to go to), during the day that is.

this is why I sit my ass up on the north side of town and never ever venture to the south side. anyone who lives here knows that

Same here. Im all good here in Andersonville and never venture south or west when evening comes. Fuck that. I stay in the northside or downtown.

That police chief needs to go imo, dude basically said as long as we keep the crime away from down town, like thats his top priority. I'd keep Rahm for now. Daley, his predecessor was good about chicago projects, but imo he never did anything to bridge the segregation gap, in fact didnt he do all the cutting off buses to the "upper class" neighborhoods at night.

Well, it porbably doesn't happen in the neighborhood you would choose to live in.

Chicago is porbably the most segregated city in the US.

Its like Paris.

I know this is an old post but... What?

Is this some kind of joke I'm not getting? In what way is Chicago like Paris, or vice-versa?

What in the hell are you talking about? You can get anywhere in the city with buses or trains at any time of the day or night. The only reason buses we're cut back at night was because of the constant budget issues with the CTA and even then you still can get anywhere in the city still.

EDIT: I live right next to 4 bus routes that run 24 hours a day and that is just in my part of the woods and 2 of those bus routes run all the way south and all the way north.

I don't think that guy knows what he's talking about. Minorities in Paris are segregrated to the outside suburbs and the whites get to have the city to themselves. Chicago is split up into North, West, and South... each with their own distinct flavor.. but none can be generalized. The north side is the definitely the safest of the 3 though, I'll say that.

paris is also incredibly segregrated

So is Los Angeles. So are a lot of other cities in the US, I'm not sure why Chicago is being singled out. I live in a neighborhood with a healthy mix of white, latino, black, & indian and I live on the oh-so-privileged north side.

He does. There are a large number of ethnic pockets in Chicago. In those areas immigrants can live without ever having to learn English of interact with anyone other than their own group. Even the people who are more integrated tend to branch off into certain ethnic neighborhoods.

I live in a pretty rough neighborhood that is slowly getting better. (W. Oakland, CA.) For whatever reason, I always see spikes in violence right around the beginning of school.

My theory, Kids are trying to make a name for themselves real quick. and since the majority of them are under 18 years old, they have the "I don't give a fuck" attitude and do whatever they want without fear of being tried as an adult.

fyi, We just had a huge manhunt with 20+ OPD in my neighborhood going door to door for a manhunt which was happening on my walk home. It was a kid that they were chasing down with their german shepherds and shotguns drawn.

Mind you, when I am walking home and see a group of teenagers or even two of them that might be no older than 15, I cross the street. Guys that are hanging out that are closer to my age (30's), I feel much more safe.

p.s. a group of 15 year olds tried to rob me last year, good thing my neighbors are strapped.

Pizanno's is even better. Pequods is the best.
Ive had Pizano's once and it was pretty damn good so I cant argue. Im ashamed to admit I had to google Pequods.

p.s. normally I would feel bad about such a shameless derail but talking about food>>>>talking about murder.

I don't even like chicago style pizza. Sue me. I eat like one piece at Lou Malnati's and I'm full. Too much bread. Give me an simple hand tossed thin crust with just tomato, basil, and mozzarella and I'll eat the whole thing.

Giordano's is pretty good, Lou Malnati's is better.
I was walking by Lou Malnati's the other day and thought it looked pretty good. I'll give it a shot.

So you'd rather have less pizza? I agree some places have too much crust. That's why I like Edwardo's.

I've told people on here my views on Chicago, and I live here. This is a violent, corrupt city with a horrendous educational system and a terrible gang situation. It mainly only infects the south and west sides, as this city is terribly segregated. The people on the north side and suburbs don't see it, so they don't care. The crime and life here is fucked up.

EDIT: I see this has already become a Chicago restaurant thread, in many respects.

Just less dough. I like a simple pizzle so I can taste everything in it. Lou Malnati's is by no means bad at all...they are using a ton of very good ingredients like most decent pizza places. But it's like a sledgehammer how much shit is on that pizza. It's like a half pound of cheese and sausage on each piece.

I know what exactly I'm talking about.

Paris has a well off center, both economically and economically. And over time, it has pushed minorities, the less educated and people of lower economic status further and further away from the cetner of the city.

The North, West and South sides don't matter. The closer you get to the center of Chicago, the median income rises, and the center gets creamier/richer.

Sure, the South side has great history and Beverly has some of the nicest houses I've seen in the city proper. But the pattern is the same.

Hugues Lagrange and Lincoln Quillian just presented a study on it.

No, what they are doing is they are only replacing officers who retire, they are not hiring more cops in general, which is what we need right now. They also did get rid of special units which was dumb, to save money of course.

Hmm, well maybe if they put that money into a special free hugs program then that'll solve the problem at it's root, because that's what gang members are really after. It's a shame they cut down on their spending to just replace what they have, and not pursue additional personnel to crack down on these things. I'm also surprised at their rates that the state/fed entities didn't get involved in a large way there.

The special units are a joke.

I have a friend who couldn't get a job in an entry teams because he didn't have the right connections. He did however spend 5 years in the Rangers.

That's the problem with this field. It's everywhere. In bigger depts, and especially in your smaller "townships/boroughs/etc". I know I lost out before to someone the board knew by first name, talking about their dad and his crazy hi-jinks at last months golf tourney.

His Ranger experience certainly at least helped with civil service tests I'm sure. But it's a shame about him trying to pursue further with no luck.
