Final Fantasy 13 - A Storm Gathers

FFXII's Cid Bunansa wasn't good? He was probably my favorite Cid; certainly my favorite evil one.

Wedge was put in so subtly that I kept feeling like I had just missed Biggs somehow.

Yeah, I know. That was clever. But until localization or fan translation continues, we can't say if Biggs is in this game.

I think the important part is that so many people feel like she has been shoehorned into everything, regardless of whether she actually has been or not.

It shows just how sick of her a decent segment of the fanbase is. And it makes SE's decision to keep returning to the XIII well for a short term revenue source slightly more questionable in terms of the long term health of the brand.
I suppose I just don't understand how that is being logically extrapolated to a fear that she'll be in Versus XIII, since so far she's really only appeared in properties that all FF leads have showed up in. /shrug

Voice actor joke.
And the purple. So much purple.

Liam 'O Brien is a great voice actor but it was a little weird having him do Caius less than one year after he did Kain given the physical and personality similarities between the two and the antagonistic tension they both shared with Lightning.

I have my . . . dislike of most of XII's villains. I think XII would have been an infinitely better game WITHOUT the Occuria. I mean, if the idea was to show that Venat and Vayne were both lying about their benevolent goals, then yeah, it was stellar, but it annoyed me how Venat was all "I'm gonna free human beings by deciding their fate and setting up my own Dynast King!" and Vayne was all "I'm gonna free humanity by teaming up with one of the ones whose enslaved it and doing the exact thing that got them enslaved anyway!"

But yes, Doctor Cid and Judge Magister Gabraanth were great.

Lightning x Kain was a let-down, man. She spends all that time with him, then the game spins around and pairs her up with Firion. Oh well, at least it isn't like that out-of-nowhere scene with Agrias and Mustadio in War of the Lions.

Lightning x [insert FF dude here] seems to constantly be a let down for a lot of fans of hers, heh.

There were... Cid, Caius, Kain... Hope, according to some people...

What's Lightning's drink of choice? Heineken? Smirnoff's? Alexander Keith's? Stella Artois? Grey Goose? Sapporo?

This is an important question.

She drinks straight Ever Clear

In seriousness, I always thought presenting Lightning as a bit of an alcoholic would have made her a better character.

Take the infamous Birthday scene if you will. Instead of immediately flipping out on Serah when she tells her she's engaged, she would just blankly stare at Snow and Serah for a while, then get up, walk into the kitchen, grab the bottle of whiskey out of the shelf and then start pouting a glass. After she's done pouring she would suddenly forgo the glass entirely and instead opt to take the whole bottle, she sits back down and just chugs the whole bottle right in front of them as Serah and Snow look on too scared and confused to say anything.

After finishing the whisky and draw her gaze to them again and say

"Would you mind repeating that."

And it would be goddamn hilarious, and Lightning would be one of my favorite FF characters ever.

But naw, not while Toriyama's writing.

Even if he did tackle alchoholism, I doubt he'd do it with anything resembling nuance. It would just end with one of the other characters giving a lame speech about determination, and then Light would immediately go cold turkey on the booze.

Somehow I don't think Lightning would mess around with beers and other light drinks, she'd just head straight for the hard liquor.
Depends on how tall she is and how well she could handle her liquor.

Tequila (Patrón) or something. Whiskey, gin... Absinthe, maybe.

She drinks straight Ever Clear
Hahahaha. Seems like her kind of drink!

I feel the need to rewrite Lightning's story and character now. I think we're on a roll here. They could actually make Lightning likeable in a Cid sort of way if they went in that sorta direction. Man, why can't they make more characters like FF7 Cid?

T-rated games have alcohol so I don't see why not.

It would be his terrible version of an AA meeting, I expect. :|

Basically he gave a bunch of long winded non-answers to questions and it felt like he was more or less casually approving everything Toriyama did without genuinely caring about the consequences.

I'm willing to be that SE has a frustrating political landscape.

I just don't get the appeal. FFXIII had several awful characters, a few mediocre ones and maybe one decent one. Lightning belongs in the mediocre category.

Toriyama doesn't need to write it into canon for you to make it your headcanon! ;-) But yeah, I'm one of the folks that likes Lightning as it and even I agree that she'd be waaaaay more interesting if she'd been a (confirmed) alcoholic. She's got so many anger/controls issues, it would have made sense and given her more depth. Missed opportunity.

After you finish your SNES IV run over in the 25th anniversary thread, start a XIII one that treats alcoholic Lightning as canon? Ofc, that would require re-playing XIII again...but it would be a great read, I'm sure!

Why is people talking about making mah girl Lightning an alcoholic!? D:

Well...that actually would be dope. If Lightning was anything like Syrenne from The Last Story I would like her even more! Only videogames can make drunk women look cool. :D

Lol...I like the alcoholic Lightning suggestion. Her job essentially made her some sort of local police and I think the alcoholic cop with issues work. They should also make her and Serah older. The alcoholism would also give the sisters' relationship more meat and conflicts.

Lightning and Firion was just fine, I thought. Though sometimes I like the crack of Lightning and that one guy from the Blitz Squad.

AAAAANYWAY, Ten bucks says I could find a story about an alcoholic Lightning on Fanfiction.net. There's one where Kain is a stripper and also her husband, so SURELY it cannot be without the realms of possibility.

I know these things because reasons.

No reason to make Serah older, I hope she remains where she is :\ no more sister sister crap please...

they better redesign all the returning characters too, just making some awful new outfit and copy/paste everything else isn't going to work for me :|

We should rewrite Lightning's character and ship our story to Toriyama. He could incorporate it for us!

I'd probably have to invest in a capture device for it, though. Unless we're talking about taking pics of the screen every few seconds. And I'd have to play through FFXIII for a third time. Hahaha.

I think a text/screenshot LP + recording cutscenes/battles would be lovely for that sort of game, though.

how do you know this? why does it exist? D:

The only thing I know is from the FF13-2 LP where they said that there's 550ish fanfics for Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

A game that's not even out yet.

A game where we've only seen, like, 8 minutes of gameplay.

A game where we barely know about the characterizations and motivations of all characters involved.

A game where we barely know everyone's names.

Well if anything, this thread's inspired me to try giving XIII another shake from where I last quit. Ended up just beating
pope dude with the multiple faces

Kind of enjoying myself slightly more now that I think I've gotten the hang of the battle system.

There's a pretty hilarious tumblr devoted to text messages from the XIII cast. It's raunchy, but makes XIII so much better. And turns out Lightning favors vodka and Fang likes boobs. Who knew?!

Also, drunk Lightning is best Lightning.

Everyone except Vanille, I bet. And Hope. Hope seems like the kinda kid who wouldn't know what a Lesbian was.

1) I know because of shameful reasons which would incriminate me. Suffice it to say I did not write it.
2) Why is because fangirls. If it isn't slash on the Dissidia fanfiction page, it's Mpreg or High School. Or 14th/11th Cycle. My favorite is the one at GameFAQs entitled: "A FNCFFXIIIRPG, Interregnum Capitulum Unus Part 2". YEESH. The worst part is that there are multiple fanfics with similar titles.
3) I shamefully confess to having written a Dissidia fanfic before Dissidia came out(this is the incriminating reason behind my knowledge of the aforementioned fanfic). I even guessed some aspects of the story correctly. But yes, Versus XIII has an astounding amount of fanfic for something about which there is less knowledge than Area 51.

For your pleasure, Dark Schala, I present: My Husband the Stripper. Iceberg, tip, you know.

I think this is simultaneously the most wonderful and the most horrifying thing about fandom. Intense fandom.

That's crazy talk. Vanille would know firsthand.

(I applaud your bravery! Post link to your Dissidia fic, plz thx)

And now my bravery is entirely dried up. I'll PM it to you, but I haven't the stones to put something I started writing when I was like, 19, out for all of GAF to see.

Don't be ashamed. No one will make fun of you....I think. I wouldn't at least. Dabbled in some FFVII fanfics myself in elementary. What if
Tifa died instead of Aerith? :D

I recall the time I tried to write a fanfic.
Then I realized no one would read it (Myself included), and I am pretty bad with correct grammar.

Still I have a little fun reading some of them from time to time.

Every fandom has its WTF parts. Really WTF parts. I think I need bleach.

Well. Um. I hope people are finding that Latin's a legitimately cool language which could open the door to learning Romance Languages and not something that you could use to flower up a title or waffle your way through finding a title.

I wanna go back to the part of the thread where we made Lightning a drunk, and thus a better character, now.

Truly, I want this to happen.

I'm betting if I do an LP of FF13, most of the time I'll complain about it some way or another. :P The only thing I'm good at is discussing tactical approaches.

How do you even come up with a story out of everything we know about Versus? What'll happen to the fanfics when the game comes out and everything they've written about is null and void? @___@

An active imagination most likely.

The fanfics would be mocked and laughed at in time for being so....incorrect. Like the pre-KHII KHII fanfics people made off of the Deep Dive secret ending in KH1.

Kitase tweeted that Lightning Saga is the name of the entire series starting from FFXIII. It is not the name of the game they are announcing this weekend. To find out what the title of the new game is, you have to wait for the event to reveal it! Twitter is so exciting! OMG!

So this could be Versus.......if they keep the ties to FF13 in that game.

LIGHTNING ROOM @ LRFF13
In the mnemonic representing the entire story of Lightning (that) began (with) FFXIII, "Lightning Saga" is the designation that was used to convey to you the contents of the event. "Lightning Saga", so is not a title. Please look forward to the title of the new developments since the announcement at the event! (Kitase)

Oh, within the Fabula Nova Crystallis pentalogy, lies the Lightning Saga trilogy, high level. It's like an Assassin's Creed thing it seems.

Amazing. Will read!

I wanna go back to the part of the thread where we made Lightning a drunk, and thus a better character, now.
Her violent overreactions to Snow's puffery become almost tragic if you imagine that she made it through the first few chapters while hung over after an extreme bender post-birthday/Serah is a l'Cie revelation. OTOH, not sure if that makes her reckless rescue attempt seem more heroic or just pathetically foolish. Probably a little bit of column a and a little bit of column b.

I'm betting if I do an LP of FF13, most of the time I'll complain about it some way or another. :P The only thing I'm good at is discussing tactical approaches.
Dang, those would've been useful if I'd been on NeoGAF back when I got my Platinum. XD A drunken re-write of Lightning's portrayal in XIII would be really interesting though. A GAF production.

How do you even come up with a story out of everything we know about Versus? What'll happen to the fanfics when the game comes out and everything they've written about is null and void? @___@
Idk, that's sort of what I find almost charming about fanfic writers - their obsessive fandom breeds something creative at least. It's fascinating to me and I confess that I do have some respect for whatever drives folks to create more art, however juvenile/weird/crappy, in response to something that they loved/inspired them. Ultimately, fanfic is pretty harmless, so when I see something like "Kain is Lightning's stripper husband and oh yeah, Vaan and Serah are their kids or wards or whatever," I tend to be more impressed than horrified that someone, somewhere out there both thought this up in response to playing Dissidia and then wanted to share it with the word. I think the fact that their Versus XIII fics will bear no resemblance to the actual game probably doesn't matter at all - canon tends to just be grist for the mill.

Am I the only one who disliked Lightnings change into a godess like role?
Much prefer soldier lightning.
(no ff7 pun intended)

I do, but at least she isn't a carbon copy of Mr. Strife anymore. He never got to lame demigod status.

I dunno how they are going to balance those abnormal stat values though in the next installment.

If I recall Valhalla Lightning had high stats.

Course the Samus Aran effect could be called into play.

I bet anything it'll be something like that.
Shes in a whole new world and loses the max strength of her powers or something.

I too love the idea of turning Lightning into the female Max Payne. :) I like the character myself, I think it's kinda a shame she's come to represent the decline of FF.
