I'm hoping they have enough stock of Haunted House initially. I'm afraid with how popular it already is, that the first shipment will not last long enough for October.

Do I buy it Day 1, and miss out on the October double points? Or, do I wait until October, and risk not getting HH in time for Halloween?

Decisions, decisions.

you'll know if double points happens in October pretty soon I'd think - either the flyer will leak or someone will let us know. Even if its out of stock come Oct 1st, there is plenty of time for them to get more stock in by Halloween. I want to wait, mainly because they put the price up in Europe so I want to get a little more value back from Lego on this one.

I know. I am trying to tell myself to get Haunted House now, and then go broke and get the B-Wing in October. But I should use that money for dental bills. :) I know the smart thing is to do double VIP. Just need the set before Halloween. That is the most important thing.

Anyways, small but important progress on the book store MOC.

Awnings completed. Again, ignore the tiles on the SNOT pieces on the side. That is just placeholder since I dont have enough of that color to actually use. But I got the door cover on and awnings to line up well enough. The covered walkway is stable enough, but not super duper solid. Of course, it never will be due to the small amount of connection it has with the ground. But I am digging how it looks.

Looks good.

Finally snatched up the Robie House on Amazon Warehouse for $130. $70 off that set? Hell yes.

I had never seen that set before. I have looked at the architecture sets but never been interested. This one has me interested. Damn you....

I've been eying it since it came out, but I couldn't justify the $200 price tag. I checked the Warehouse this morning and saw Tower Bridge for $200 and Robie House for $130. I almost grabbed them both, but I'm going to see how a few things pan out with some stuff I'm selling before I decide my next large purchase. Oh, and birthday in October, ha. I may be turning 26, but my family still loves giving me gifts. :D I will embrace that and buy MORE LEGO.

E: I have a few of the Architecture sets. Falling Water and Farnsworth are my favorite by far. Robie House, though, has SO MUCH beautiful brick work, and it's the only one of his buildings I've had the chance to visit (fiancee took me on a tour of his Chicago buildings for my birthday last year). It holds some significance to me in that regard. But as for the sets themselves, some are amazing, but I would avoid them at list price (except Falling Water because that's actually a pretty solid deal).

My first try at the Iron Throne.

I also think if you order during double VIP, you'd still get credit for it, no?

OK, so two things.

First, how is the LEGO Master Builder stuff? Are the booklets with design "stuff" worth the cost of the sets?

Second...

On Facebook, LEGO posted about doing a sculpture for some kid (of his head). He won a contest or something. Here's the summary of what I read (and what I felt was useful).

LEGO DUDE said:
I’ll start by mocking up a virtual Qynton in a 3D modeling program. There are plenty of them out there like Maya, Poser, Mudbox, ZBrush… my current favorite right now for modeling figures is Daz3D. It’s really quick and a lot of fun to play with. In the program I was able to get a pretty good likeness of Qynton in less than a half hour by using all the face morphing tools. I’m by no means an expert with the program but then again I don’t need to be. It’s really just a tool to help me quickly get my proportions correct.

So after I’ve finished my virtual 3D model of Qynton, I’ll import it into another 3D model software we use here. This is a proprietary program that allows us to block out the shape of our large scale models.

How it works is that wherever the wireframe of my 3D model intersects with a matrix of virtual 1x1 LEGO bricks it will fill that volume with those bricks and exclude everything else creating a shell of the form. As you can see from the bottom left image, it isn’t always 100% precise. So it’s a time saver but I still need to do quite a bit of work to the neck and chest area. The bottom right image shows the model after about 8 hours of cleaning it up and changing colors a bit.

Once the 3D LEGO computer design is finished I can start working with the actual bricks. The tough part is in working in any actual brick prototypes that I come up with for the finer details of Qynton’s face, like his eyes, nose, and mouth with the virtual design. I will often have to work and rework both the real prototype(s) and/or the computer model to make sure they work well together.

Worth reading. Basically, they can take anything, block it out in their software, and fill it with bricks. MOC'ing made easy. O_o

well that sounds very easy from a conceptual perspective, its how you would discretise a continous 2D object on chequered paper...

[edit]
muhaaa,
I would have never thought I can post an image from my final thesis in the LEGO thread on neogaf ^^
so this is how you could discretise a line onto a 2d chequered surface.
would work the same in 3D, easy enough to implement.

This is pretty rad - time to get to work on a proprietary GAF software! ;)

I'm gonna try to incorporate some of the "toys" from the castle...the playability of the set is probably the best I've ever seen but the appearance is lacking next to the haunted house. If I can combine them properly...mmmm <3

I'm thinking of taking the organ from the Vampyre Castle and the clock from the 30201 Ghost polybag and adding those to interior of the HH.

Spoke to my contact at the LEGO store today and they expect a line forming at opening time on Saturday for the Haunted House. Apparently there has been a lot of interest from customers so far.

In regards to the Master Builder series... not sure if its worth the cost. It's geared to a younger audience, but some of the books' contents would be appreciated by an AFOL (Comments and techniques from the personalities at TLG specifically). There is a lot of online content - if the MB site decides it is going to cooperate that day. I have Levels 1 to 3, and I am not sure if I'll be back for Level 4 in November.

The books are the only thing I'm intrigued by - I know there's articles online about various MOC and building techniques, but I'd love to see it from LEGO's mouth. It'd be cool to get their take on things.

I hope you won't mind too much if I borrow some of your library techniques for my wizard's tower (particularly dat shelving). Beautiful work man.

I plan on having a few bookcases in the middle of the second floor. Lots o books!

I've started in on the Royal Joust x2...wow, the pieces you get with this set are so valuable for a castle-minded builder like me! I am thinking about buying a third instead of shelling out a premium for the OOP Kingdoms castle.

Maybe a fourth. >.>

The clock is a great idea! I need to track down that polybag.

Worth checking out minecraft and tools like world edit, does a similar thing - eg creating domes out of 1x1 cubes. I've used my nanoblocks models and transferred them into minecraft 1:1 before

Does anyone else see the seam in the felbeast's neck? Eowyn vs the Witch-King with Head Cutting Action! :D

I'm keeping up hope for a balrog set. It's gonna be interesting to see how they do it in the game. If it's made out of bricks, they might release one, but I wouldn't assume a custom figure like the troll would be worthwhile.

So, has anyone had any experience selling minifigs on Bricklink?

I know that some of the licensed sets have relatively high collector value for minifigs, but I'd assume that there has to be some kind of mint-condition qualifier for that.

I just picked up the Fury-Class Sith Interceptor (http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=9500-1) because I fell in love with its design and it was a daily deal on Amazon, and I realized that I really have no desire to keep its minifigs around (I build my own stuff, mostly), and they're selling for $12-15 new each on Bricklink. But I don't really see a lot of listings for "used" minifigs - is it worth trying to put them out there?

Hey, I don't know if anyone is still interested in replicating the mini LEGO Store set, but if you're looking for that hard-to-find 2x2 tile with the LEGO logo tampographed on them (as opposed to stickers), there are a couple of sets up at LEGO's online store that appear to have them.

Check out the business card holder and the pencil holder for said piece.

I was also just playing around with the figures and blocks that I have on my desk here, and I came up with a serviceable LEGO BioShock.

Now that they've finally made a build-able Rancor, I don't doubt that we will get a build-able Balrog

The balrog has already been shown in a trailer. Hard to make out much, but there it is.

It took me most of the night, but I finished part 1 of the Fire Brigade. Ill take nicer pictures when I am actually done. Quite a few leftover pieces, don't think I missed anything (but who knows, Im sure something is off hah)

Sound like nice additions to lump into the Haunted House order.

I am still debating between getting it ASAP, or waiting for potential double VIP in October. Must be strong. I can just redo Death Star in September to satisfy the itch.

Wait, what's this about double VIP? Is this for sure happening?
