We picked up a couple new sets yesterday.

Been wanting Luke's speeder as we don't really have many Star Wars minifigs and this is a nice starter set.

We also picked up the Spider Man set. Set is so so, though my son enjoys it as a playset. Spiderman figure is good, but the real star of the set is the Doc Ock minifig. He can even use his legs to 'stand', suspending him up in the air. pretty sweet.

My son wants the Spidey set too...he loves Doc Ock for some reason

This will be a bit of a strange request, but are there any Canadian members here? Im looking to order a few things from Sears.ca (Stargate Best Lock sets), but they only ship within the Canada. Hoping to order all of the sets and have them shipped to someone in Canada, who can then ship it to me in the States. Would pay for shipping, obviously, and a bit extra for the trouble.

Progress on the book store so far. I ran out of dark tan tiles for the sides, so trying a few options for them. And I need to steal more window pieces from the Friends sets. The front steps are not done, but I plan to make an awning coming out over the door and connecting to the studs on the sidewalk. It is late, and I need to get to bed, but I got so jazzed about getting the bookcases looking so good.

Is that a blue base I see? Are you building this shop on an Island? The foundation will not be sturdy.

The book cases look great. Did you get the idea from the vampire castle, or is this a common way of doing books?

Have not done the Vampyre Castle, but got the idea from the lettering in the modulars. It is so simple yet terribly effective.

Yeah. It was all I could find at the time. Besides, it makes it look like it flooded or something and the water is about to come out of the drain. Or perhaps a blue floor. :)

So I wonder...If I were to buy the Death Star or Diagon Alley, how much could I potentially get back for the minifigs alone? I'm considering it for some MOC fun.

Not sure. Both come with tons of figs, but the expensive nature and age of the Death Star might make the figs more valuable. I have toyed with getting Diagon Alley as well just for moc pieces. So many windows.

The windows in Diagon Alley are some of my favorites. Pretty much nothing going on in this set for play, which surprised me, but for MOC and display it's great. The build was a lot of fun, too.

Just got a second Battle of Alamut for FOURTEEN, that's right FOURTEEN UNITED STATES DOLLARS. That's with shipping. Yay for white and tan pieces. Dat MOCin'. And now I have, like, 9238091283 Dastan minifigures. Superlative.

I finished the Vampyre Castle with my daughter this weekend. I've mentioned a few times that she really likes the Friends theme, but I never realized how much that was just because of the "girly" nature of it....her attention span with a set she truly loves was stunning.

Every step of the way she was grabbing the pieces to play with them. She sat for hours actually playing with the thing after it was built, and as anybody with a six-year old will tell you: that's a feat.

I really am stunned at both the playability of the set. The BBQ in Olivia's house ain't got nothing on this castle. The trap door, elevating shackles, secret entrance, spikes, secret stairs etc. make for an awesome set. I absolutely recommend this for anybody even remotely interested in the theme.

The trap door is amazing!

I have the worst luck with CMF's.

Spotted a box with 14 remaining bags and decided to blind-buy them all, expecting maybe 2 or 3 dupes at most.

Nope - out of the 14 bags, I got 8 unique minifigs.

I now have:

1 x Santa
1 x Pirate
1 x Skier
1 x Bavarian Guy
2 x DJ
2 x Fairy
2 x Evil Robot
4 x Football Player

...sigh.

A team of football players can be cool for some things though.

Trade you a conquistador for an evil robot!!

Just for fun, out of that huge lot that I got the BSB from, there was this awesome poster. It's a complete nostalgia trip, as I remember being a kid and just staring at catalogs like this with all my awesome old toys and just fantasizing about what I may get for my birthday or Christmas.

This one is great because of the Castle art. I've uploaded two high res images for you guys to check out if you like. You can just click on 'em to get to the super big ones. I'd scan it but my scanner is too small to handle this. Enjoy!

Wow, total nostalgia trip seeing that. But it also reminds me that that was the beginning of the dark days for the space system sets. Coming off the highs of Space Police, Blacktron 2, and M-Tron, the follow ups left much to be desired. Smaller piece counts, too many custom pieces. That was about the time I abandoned Lego as a kid.

I totally agree, but the Castle and Pirate sets are so beautiful

First modular? If so, you've taken your first step into a larger world.

Speaking of which, now that I am home from work, it is time for some Octoberfest Sam Adams and more modular MOCing!

Yep yep. I have lots of sets on the way. The knockoff LEGO Stargate sets (Best Lock, which I know isn't as great as real LEGO, but Stargate!), Fire Brigade, Helms Deep, another Urak Hai army, and the Series 1 Naboo Starfighter planet thing. Should keep me busy...for a week or so hah.

Castle started to go downhill as well, but not as rapidly as Space did. Pirates was still in its infancy, and was still kicking serious butt at that point.

Please post impressions of Fire Brigade. Let us see if it's charms work on another member. I sound like a broken record, but "Dat second floor!"

I loved those pirates sets - that big ship is still my favourite set that isn't the Whirl and Wheel Super Truck. All my castle stuff was slightly before those, though I do own the little Merlin hut thing pictured midway down the poster.

I blasphemed today.

A combination of curiousity and heavy discounting got me to purchase both a Kre-o and Mega Bloks set (Transformers and Halo, respectively). I never had any knockoff lego growing up, and the only stuff I've really had experience with to date is the Duplo sized Mega Bloks that someone bought my daughter (and I, guiltily, bought a bit of too on clearance). The plastic feels weird, the studs are too big and it doesn't fit together the way Duplo does. There's no satisfying click, it just goes together in an indifferent way.

These sets were interesting as it was my first experience with the Lego-sized knockoffs. I'll say immediately that the Mega Bloks is the worst, the plastic feels off, and the pieces take way too much force to clip together or clip apart. But I do kind of like the Halo minifigs and the metallic looking plastic looks sort of neat.

The Kre-o feels much more like Lego in terms of plastic and fit, even if the studs look wonky. Both sets had stickers and the Kreo ones were absolute garbage in terms of how they look applied and how the colours do not match the blocks in any way. Also, the wheels included in the Transformers set are hilariously bad. The car itself doesn't look terrible when assembled (it just looks like a modified ripoff of Lego's Super Speedster) but then you dump on these thin, small, plasticky wagon wheels and the entire thing is ruined.

Wouldn't buy either again (though I wouldn't mind a Halo Warthog if it was cheap enough) but as an experiment it was interesting enough and the Kreo Transformer was surprisingly fun to build in robot form. It just doesn't hold a candle to the real thing, and that doesn't particularly surprise me.

I used to drool over those poster as a kid and imagine playing with the cool sets. Awesome trip down memory lane!

-Kre-O post-

Welcome to the club! Sideswipe is a fun build and looks great, but I'll admit that the wheels on the first few Transformers sets lacked rollability (especially Mirage and Sideswipe). The Kreons (minifigures) were the reason the Kre-O sets became so popular.

If you want a quality yet affordable set, get Ratchet. Great alt mode, superb bot mode, cool Kreons, and tons of awesome tools. (Stretcher, pliers, shovel, drill, wrench, axe, pick, etc.)

Personal recommendations:
Kre-O Transformers
1) Autobot Ratchet. Best set for the best value: affordable and looks/plays great in both modes. The Kreons and tools are excellent as well.
2) Rotor Rage (Vortex). Only found online or at TRU, this set comes with some great Kreons and an amazing (and stable) Vortex. His vehicle mode is neat, but his robot mode is what makes this set shine.
3) Decepticon Ambush and/or Cycle Chase. Hasbro realized Kreons were the best part of Kre-O Transformers, so they released two army building sets: three Vehicons with Cliffjumper and three Autotroopers with Barricade. Because they sell out quickly, check TRU for easy availability.

Kre-O Battleship
1) Combat Chopper. Sturdier pieces and better Kreons than the first sets and the chopper itself has a fun spring-loaded mechanism. (Press a button and the blades rotate!) I may be partial to it because it was on clearance for $5 at Target, but it's still nice.
2) Nothing. Everything else (save for possibly the Mine Stryker set) is either overpriced or cheaper quality.

Summary: Although the earlier sets were cheaper quality and newer sets have the occasional loose pieces, Kre-O is a great LEGO supplement for fans of Transformers and Battleship. You get two quality builds for Transformers (for the most part) and cool aliens and vehicles for Battleship. You also get the starring Kreons, highly articulated minifigures that represent a smaller version of the main set's Transformer or a bunch of Battleship marines/aliens.

The expensive sets can now be found for cheaper with relative ease; Walmart has many sets on clearance (like Ratchet for $13 and the occasional super cheap Battleship set), while Amazon has the older huge Transformers sets like Optimus Prime for 50% to 70% off. Watch a few reviews on YouTube to see what you're getting into. It's a nice incentive to try something new for a change.

You can ignore Mega Bloks entirely.

===========================================

Pardon the mini Kre-O gushing. Kre-O needs some more love around here! (Feeling inspired to take a few pictures soon!)

On topic: Target has printable $5 off coupons for a couple of noteworthy sets:

  • $24.99 $19.99 - LEGO Ninjago Lasha's Bite Cycle (9447)
  • $29.99 $24.99 - LEGO Star Wars Saesee Tiin's Jedi Starfighter (9498)
  • $34.99 $29.99 - LEGO City Mining Truck (4202)
  • $79.99 $74.99 - LEGO Creator Highway Pickup (7347)

They seem to expire mid-September. I'd recommend picking up Lasha's Bite Cycle - for 250 pieces you get an awesome Fangpyre motorcycle with two minifigure-sized purple translucent flames, a small blacksmith forge, Lasha, Cole ZX, a bunch of weapons (most notably a stick of dynamite and a golden chainsaw used as a spear handle), and a black spider.

Very unique pieces and tons of fun. $20 is a steal, which is why they are out of stock at almost every Target in SoCal. Sure you can order online, but the instant gratification on the Bite Cycle is amazing.

I spy, with my little eye, the Wheel of the Whirl and Wheel Super Truck set.

Still my favourite Lego set. I'm going to have to Bricklink a couple of pieces as I was unable to find three or four parts when I rebuilt it the other week, and I'd have to completely sort through my half-dozen bins of Lego to even have a chance at finding them again (assuming they weren't lost). Weirdly, two of the missing parts are white rims, no idea where the grey ones went. Can't really tell when it's assembled, though, I put those two white ones on the inside on the trailer.

I might be tempted. Superstore up here had Sideswipe for $12 and I think Ratchet was ten (they also had another one, transforms into a cop car, forget his name).

The oddest thing about the Kreo is how one stud on each of the plain plate pieces is hollowed. Weird way to do the injection for each piece.

I have gray wheel rims coming out of my ears. You mean the tire hubs right?

850486 (Rock Band Minifigure Accessory Set) and 850487 (Halloween Accessory Set) are now available from LEGO S@H (and probably the LEGO store as well). $15.99USD each.

Sound like nice additions to lump into the Haunted House order.

I am still debating between getting it ASAP, or waiting for potential double VIP in October. Must be strong. I can just redo Death Star in September to satisfy the itch.

Yeah. I know I have ten others to rob from if I want (from my other Model Team truck) and the dozens of white hubs are from various Technic sets, but I have no idea how I'd lose or misplace some.

I'm guessing it was the period of time when I left the set in its alternate build, and as a kid having organized Lego was not top on the list of my priorities.

Also, a couple of months back I first learned about the Mach 2 Red Bird Rig, which is basically a reskinned Whirl and Wheel with a different truck, different colours, and a jet on the back. I'd be all over that to pair with the Whirl and Wheel.

Double VIP - you'll be punching yourself of you buy it now and one pops up. It's brand new and thus won't be an issue obtaining!

I know. I am trying to tell myself to get Haunted House now, and then go broke and get the B-Wing in October. But I should use that money for dental bills. :) I know the smart thing is to do double VIP. Just need the set before Halloween. That is the most important thing.

Anyways, small but important progress on the book store MOC.

Awnings completed. Again, ignore the tiles on the SNOT pieces on the side. That is just placeholder since I dont have enough of that color to actually use. But I got the door cover on and awnings to line up well enough. The covered walkway is stable enough, but not super duper solid. Of course, it never will be due to the small amount of connection it has with the ground. But I am digging how it looks.
