Is GAF too strict?

I think I said it in post your pic or some other thread in which looks were already being discussed. That being said it was pretty gross how every random article that happened to involve a woman got spammed with "would."

I wasn't trying to call you out or anything by bringing up your post. I just needed an example of "would" in reverse and you're the only one on GAF who I know is a female. (I'm sure there are others, I just don't know who they are.)

Come to think of it, I have seen a lot of threads where almost the entire first and second page of responses were nothing but "would" or some variation of would, and I guess I can see that being a problem. It does give off a boys club or frat type of vibe. I guess I should just look at GAF as a place for serious discussion and not a place for fun.

I think it is somewhat similar to the issue of port begging. In isolation, one person saying that they would be interested in having a game come out on System X is not problematic, or at least relatively innocuous. In practice, before the mods made the decision to become more strict about port begging, conversations about games would end up being not about the games but instead devolve into consolewars arguments about the relative merits of the consoles and which one would make the best home for it and how realistic a proposition this was and so forth and not about the game itself.

Similarly, many posts in the "would" category might not be all that bad taken in isolation, but collectively become problematic. I am not saying that these things are strictly equivalent to one another - and I personally think that "would" has its own inherent problems that port begging does not necessarily have - but simply that the approach that moderation takes these issues has that parallel.

Nah that's fine, it's grizzkev's throwing around "hypocrite" at me that's bothering me. If I said "would" to anyone in post your pic it was probably someone I talk to outside of the forum. And if I said it in another thread is probably some hot men thread in regards to Javier Bardem.

Very well said..

Furthermore, in a lot of threads it has no bearing on the topic at hand..

I'm always curious if people said "would" to GAFfers, would they be creeped out or flattered? It's a thought in the back of mind.

Um, it basically gets an eyeroll from me. In terms of posting a pic, depending on the pic I decide to post, it's just not a big deal. I find it more disturbing on an article that has nothing to do with modeling (for example), that a woman's looks or whether she's fuckable becomes a point of discussion.

Would posts just seem so redundant. Like it's somehow noteworthy or surprising that the average gaffer would have sex with an attractive woman.

It's largely people who want to express their opinion loudly.

Sort of like when a new screenshot is posted and fifty people go "ZOMG DAY ONE!"

Do women "would" men?

This has never, ever been a problem, even once, on this forum the way the reverse situation is.

I think a crude expression of sexual attraction is fine.

It isn't here and isn't going to become so.

Is it because of the crudeness? If I said, "I feel that this woman is extremely attractive and would likely enjoy sexual relations with her," is that similarly subject to a warning/ban?

We have banned people for an exceptionally large range of different ways of saying "I wanna fuck her" and this would be no exception.

I really, honestly don't believe there's serious confusion here. It is not, in fact, acceptable in the "culture and morality we're all familiar with" to butt into conversations about women and randomly begin to talk about how you want to have sex with them.

I think I'd be creeped out. I don't see why you can't just call somebody attractive without immediately escalating to a sexual level.

Not saying I would (hahaha), but I am just curious. Wondering if it ever has happened.

Well... okay then.

I'll say three things. First, two of my three bans came from posting my opinions, so saying "your opinions are protected" isn't some sweeping statement you can make.

You were just the physical manifestation of "pc gaf", because your post was the one i happened to reply to - none of what i said was directed at you personally, i don't really know who you are or what you stand for as a poster. If you feel the glove does not fit you, then it probably doesn't.

Second, I've seen plenty of times when people disagree with the "popular" opinion on GAF - it all comes down to how you state that opinion and how you treat others when doing so.

And that's the argument in essence. It does not come down to that when you state your opinion from the other side and you get much more leeway doing it.

Finally, unless people are being rude or ignorant in the stating of their opinion, I try not to dismiss those opinions. So it's also kind of annoying that you're just throwing out statements about how dismissive or rude people like me are.

I'm sorry, i did not mean you personally. It's a good thing that you don't.

So is the policy against this specific GIF, or all so-called "seizure gifs," because I've seen worse posted and they were left unbanned.

See: the last few pages of answers from mods. They aren't in every thread, they don't see everything. If you see a random seizure gif lying around, PM a mod or something.

He was just banned, so I am wrong. I guess they didn't see it. I apologize for any trouble. I just think it's still harsh to get banned for an unspoken policy, but I guess common sense should take precedent above all else, and I've learned that.

I really don't like the fact that anybody who posts a humorous topic these days is pretty much guaranteed a ban or Junior Member status. In GAF's heyday, there was a great mix of serious threads and joke threads, and it made the forum pretty fun. Now everything must be super-serious at all times.

Also, the Outrage Olympics need to stop.

I have been here for about 14 years and been a mod about 13

I would say GAF isnt much different besides having better guidelines for what will get you banned

Suppose this thread had been created today. You don't think that user would get juniored for it?

Depends if they made bunch shitty threads like that then sure they would

When we had more admins he would have been tagged and given a cat avatar

Even if nobody was offended by it, do you feel those posts contribute in any way to said thread?
I find joke responses to joke threads occasionally amusing, yeah. And the end result of that thread in particular suggested that those types of threads aren't welcome at all anymore, which is slightly disappointing since that kind of atmosphere was one of the things that made GAF my go-to forum in the first place, but it's not the end of the world or anything. I just kinda wish OT wasn't so serious all of a sudden.

The reason I like Off-Topic on GAF is because there's plenty of serious discussion. Mind you, I rarely contribute or post, but I like reading some of such threads. The fact that such discussions take place is a good sign for the forum.

As for the "would" comments, I don't really see any humour value in them. They're pretty much a waste of forum posts, even if they aren't offensive.

Holy Hell, GAF's been around for that long?

I believe, sir, you are wrong.

Also, on GirlGAF we were banned from posting hot dudes just to say they were hot.

Equality, yo. We are through the looking glass, people.

OT nowadays makes me a bit more depressed than when I first joined. I would wish there were more joke threads, as they are infinitely more enjoyable then a thread like "Mother decapitates her three year old." Sure, some joke threads only end up with a lot of people saying "would" or something equally brainless, but super-depressing and sober threads like that spark about as much discussion as the joke threads, just in the completely opposite direction.

I find joke threads get annoying and just take up space.

I relish the day Dr Eggman got juniored.

The occasional thread here and there can be fun, sure...but some users just spam them every second day. It gets old.

The other day, someone was banned for saying to someone else that they were "dense". With this sort of strictness, one might wonder what sort of other innocuous words could get him banned on Gaf.

I dunno.

I made a nightmare thread this morning.

I understand it could have caused psychological trauma.

"Outrage olympics"

Haha, this is really not a thing dude.
Plenty of chill threads, like my Pizza-thread!

Blame space was always banned. Those posts never existed. War is peace.

I guess that's what happens when you get triple juniored?

Well no more threads involving urological surgery from me then.

Was going through the GOG thread and I saw this post. It made me immediately think of this thread, because he said nothing I haven't thought before about that particular situation, and it doesn't look like a personal attack to me. This is assuming it was the reason for the ban, of course.

No. If anything, it should be even more strict.

Things have gotten much better since I joined here. Less tolerance to sexism and fanboyism, among other things.

I imagine the ban was because of the c-word. Its use is prohibited.
