Halo 4: A Hero Awakens (10 Minute Singleplayer ViDoc)

god I not only remember that podcast, but i remember reading him having that meltdown in the review thread. haha

Whenever a person starts layering on the hyperbole, I immediately think of that dude and "the last significant game of all time."

Impressive. The improved facial tech makes a dramatic difference, and all the characters models seem much more solid and tangible than the characters in any of the previous games did.

The music gives me hope that even with the tracks previewed earlier that really didn't work for me, the soundtrack will be a great fit for a Halo game. For once I really liked everything I heard.

Cortana and the Chief's interaction was always one of my favorite aspects of Halo. I'm pleased to see Halo 4 is putting that front and center, picking up on the rampancy plot that Bungie teased and annoyingly dropped in Halo 3. There's potential for some great storytelling here. Maybe 343 will actually pull off a worthwhile narrative.

The multiplayer previews had me thinking this game was straying too far from the series' fundamentals. I still think the Spartan IVs are hideous, but I can overlook that if the campaign is as good as this vidoc implies. I was toying with the idea of holding off on a purchase for a few months after Halo 4's release, but now I'm glad I didn't cancel my preorder for the LE. Hype restored.

Video games are art confirmed. ::rolls eyes at the over dramatization::

Game looks great though. :)
You're right, all the characters should have been leaning back in big leather armchairs, absently clutching half an inch of smoldering cigarette.

"I...*yawn* won't let you leave this...planet."

Bungie's approach to Master Chief was contrary to the character he became, I think. He wasn't really meant to be stoic so much as the silent protagonist/player avatar, but what few lines he did have and the backstory provided by the Halo books ended up giving him much more personality than the silent protagonist usually has. They never really did that justice.

I think 343 is backing away from that fill-in-the-blank approach and giving him more room for character development. That's honestly what excites me most about this game. Really looking forward to more dialogue and some genuine internal struggle.

So, how long until people screen shot the 2-3 images we had in that video for the script and try to decipher what was written on those pages?

Yeah fuckin shit. Turned It off. Looks too awesome.

Since we are talking gifs, is there a way to delete every 2nd frame and stuff if you didn't select it in the import window and feel like doing it afterwards, but don't want to go through and individually select each second frame?

Didn't see it mentioned but I thought the mention of
If we could just get back to Earth, find Halsey. She can fix this.

I thought that was pretty big considering.

I don't understand how 343 basically achieved an almost generational type leap in the visuals within a generation.

Those cutscenes look fucking amazing.

Same here, I'm awed by the fact that this is indeed 720p. I mean, I know Uncharted is 720p as well, but the whole space/future landscape is a lot more pleasing to the eyes than the jungle/organic look.

They must be squeezing every last drop the 360 hardware has to get:

- 720p native
- What looks like some sort of basic AA (Would that be FSAA? MSAA?)
- Dat lighting
- Full mo-cap

All while keeping Halo's core feature set

- Open landscapes
- 4 player co-op
- 4 player split-screen (?)
- Forge
- Theatre
- Decent enemy AI (?)

It just shouldn't be possible.

Seeing all this shit is making drool at the thought of Halo 5 on the new Xbox.

The team over at 343 and what they're doing with Halo 4 is literally the only reason I keep my 360 plugged in now. Just so it's ready for that day.

I cannot fucking wait. At all. This looks like everything I ever wanted from Halo: An expanded narrative, a HUGE graphical jump, and the animations to sell the package.

Someone hold me.

This looks fantastic, an amazing send off for the Xbox 360. Halo 5 will look utterly astonishing if this is the baseline to work from.

343 *bow*

Microsoft was not kidding when they said they formed the best team in the industry for Halo 4. Bungie was not able to achieve visuals like this with the series, but 343i did it with their first attempt.

They should make a next-gen Perfect Dark. That would be amazing. It doesn't even have to be a FPS. A stealth game would be great. Microsoft needs to give this team freedom. I don't mind them making Halo games, but to use them for Halo alone would be such a waste.

Have them make....

ALL THE GAMEZ

After seeing all this amazing. You have to wonder what Ryan Payton's 'vision' for Halo was.

Awesome stuff, although i did find the over-dramatic nature of the whole thing hilarious. "Lets explore the irony in cortanas humanity in this vid doc, ooh ahhhh". Fun to watch though.

I'll never get the complaint against people taking to their craft with an utmost seriousness, and not hiding that fact. You think grand to do grand.

Another very fascinating thing here is how well the 360 is able to render the motion capture technology that is being used for this game. A good example is the end of the video where Cortana gives her "don't make a promise" speech. You can really see an actual actress within the model there. I mean it looks alive, from the eyes to the small nuances in movement and expression.

I don't know how they're pulling this shit off on hardware this ancient. It rivals anything out there.

I was in line to play Spartan Ops at PAX today - ran out of time, ultimately - and was talking with the guy in front of me. He said he thought Halo 4 looked a lot like Reach, in terms of graphics. Granted, we were looking at an E3 build (so it was from the March/April time frame in terms of development).

Well, aside from the lighting, I pointed out. That's gotten a pretty big upgrade. Yeah, he agreed. It has.

And the image quality, I said. FXAA, no funky motion blurring effects, really sharp stuff.

And the detailing at medium and long ranges are better; the imposter system in Reach sapped a lot of detail out of things quickly.

So, yeah. Aside from the lighting, detailing and image quality, it looks a lot like Reach.

Great video, very interested to contextualize a lot of the scenes. The dude yelling at the Chief in particular - I want to see what the Chief is doing to drive that tension and how he responds to it.
