Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

What about quick controls for the background music player: pause, rewind, skip track etc?
Where are those hidden or does that require switching to the app/using multiple panels?

The quick controls show up when you use the volume buttons on your tablet, notebook or keyboard. If you have a keyboard without them, it looks like you're out of luck. It pisses me off, because my current keyboard got them, but I plan to get a new Filco and they don't have media keys.

Yeah, I meant the pro.

Thanks, I cba with a powerhouse desktop as I need something like the Surface to suit my university needs. It's great to see that I can play TF2 and Civ V.

TF2 ? Yes .... CIV 5 is another story , it actually gets very demanding late in the game.

This is an i5-3427U dual core 1.8-2.8ghz 3MB L3 17w with a hd 4000 at 350/1150mhz with 4 gigs of ddr 3 1600 and 1600x900 res.

Its possible we get a faster cpu in surface But right now the top of the line is i7 3667U 2 core 2ghz /3.2ghz 4MB of cache same gpu.

So i don't see it making a huge diffrence in gaming mabye a few frames per second more.

This is why i'm hoping we see haswell a few months early with the surface. IT should double gpu performance at the same power evenlopes.

MS' GFW/Xbox windows division seems to be pathetic, but it would be cool as hell if they got their act together and started getting their own first party titles and support from publishers like EA on WinRT.

I want to know what happens here.

Dude randomly posing with a borrowed/bought/stolen car?
Dude randomly driving by a surface ad and recognising it?
Random dude wants to make a photo of the ad, car is bonus?
Random dude wants to make a photo of the car, ad is bonus?

None of the above.

The Zappas have good taste in tablets :P

Screw Microsoft.
Screw the Surface.

SONY AND PLAYSTATIONVAIO FOR LIFE.

Sadly the details from our source are scarce when it comes to the full specs of the device or when it’ll be released. Judging by the images though, the device seems to run more than just Windows RT due to the Microsoft Office interface that we see in one of the photos. It’ll have a unique design that allows it to convert into a slate tablet and then into a keyboard laptop when needed. It’ll have a stylus interface that’ll allow for handwriting over the tablet just as well as you’ll be able to handle the Windows 8 UI with your finger.

We’ll keep you up to speed with more details as they emerge. So far, I know many of us are already excited.

Update: Judging from some additional images, we have noticed that the keyboard is backlit, so this device is definitely geared at a more professional level. The design does resemble the Microsoft’s surface retractable stand, but the keyboard is not an optional accessory you can just detach, which may be good for some and not for others. I personally find an attached keyboard to be more convenient as trying to type on a detachable keyboard while in your lap is kind of cumbersome.

Both this and the Samsung prototype are 11 inches. I am safely assume they are i5 laptops.

Interesting so far no one has made anything that have the same spec as the Surface Pro.

there is office on Windows RT so that image doesn't confirm that it runs Windows 8.

I would assume with the Vaio name it's very likely running Windows 8.

Ew it has a nipple and no trackpad.
The trackpoint actually works really well with windows 8 compared to the usual tiny craptastic touchpads a chassis like this would support. Don't really care much about the lack of gestures when you'll have a keyboard with shortcuts.

Seems like its a full size keyboard too. Wonder what the screen is angled at with that design.

Does office on RT look like that though? Doesn't seem very touch friendly and I thought MS would have a special Office version for RT, probably touch friendly but maybe missing some advanced functionality like excel scripts, monte carlo simulations, etc. It's a Sony though, which means Apple pricing without Apple quality and I think MS will probably do better with their own.

office 2013 has a mode where you can make the buttons etc... more spread out, but other than that there is no dedicated touch application. It should be the same thing that is released for Windows 8. OneNote has a dedicated metro application though, but honestly if you are going to use Office you are going to use it with a mouse and keyboard, you might use it to view documents on a tablet but I highly doubt you would get real work done with a touch screen.

The new Samsung Ativ looks great, has 2gb ram, Snapdragon S4 and a massive 8200mah battery. Might get this instead of Surface If priced similar.

And does anyone know by when MS will announce the price for Surface and other devices? I want to get the Note 10.1 from BB, as they have a 30 day return policy....but wondering if they'll announce the price by end of Sep or not.

There is a Surface and Windows 8 Launch event in New York on the 25th of October, so if not before that then on that date most likely.

i still say we get more info on the 14th of sept. The cake said 9:14 and I doubt they choose that out of thin air.

It would make sense for the tablet pricing and info to be known before they start selling them after all.

It makes sense also. The 5th you get the nokia news out and dominate the news cycle for a few days , then apple releases the iphone on the 12th as the rumors go and they dominate for a bit and then you get MS back in the news with the surface info.

I don't think it's that hard to spoof the benchmark app, especially with all the custom roms on the net, but the thought is exciting.

Microsoft Surface Phone device found in benchmark app?

The upcoming launch of Microsoft's Surface tablet will mark the company's first ever venture into making its own PC (although Microsoft has certainly made other PC-related hardware such as mice and keyboards). Now it seems that Microsoft might just be working on its own phone handset too.

WParea.de claims that the Windows Phone benchmark app WP Bench has detected the use of a device identified as "Microsoft Surface Phone". The software version number is 8.0.9754.0, which is consistent with previous sightings of Windows Phone 8.

Assuming that this isn't some kind of spoof, one might speculate that Microsoft is in the early stages of working on its own smartphone device with the same Surface name as its upcoming Windows 8/RT tablet. But before everyone gets over-excited, bear in mind that it is technically possible to spoof a handset's device ID (although altering the OS version is much more troublesome).

Does this mean that Microsoft is entering into the smartphone hardware business on its own, bypassing other OEMs like Nokia, Samsung and HTC? While at first glance that seems unlikely, most people would not believe Microsoft would have entered the PC hardware market until they announced the Surface tablet.

Back in June, Microsoft explicitly denied that it was working on its own smartphone. But Microsoft also denied that it was getting a new corporate logo... less than three weeks before unveiling its new corporate logo. Never say never.

I don't think Microsoft would be stupid enough to test their prototype devices with the full retail name, but as someone who's unimpressed with the Nokia and Samsung models so far, something like this fan render would excite me.

I don't think that render is exciting in any way (it's basically an edgier iPhone 4, isn't it), but I'd love to see what MS can do.

Poor Nokia :-(
I don't get why Nokia can't make something exciting. All the elements are there, and they just can't seem to put it all in a package that blows me away. Although I hope they'll prove me wrong tomorrow.

Surface Phone? That will not sit well with Nokia and other phone manufacturers.

Unless its nokia and one of the other phone manufacturers making it ?

I can see nokia making a surface phone and having it branded under MS . Would make sense also . MS can have their flagship like the nexus but then nokia can continue to innovate in diffrent ways. The nokia leaks of upcoming phones aren't exactly my cup of tea and i don't know many in the work place that will want such bright colored phones

Hard to imagine what a Surface phone would bring to the table that the supposed 920 doesn't already cover (even though the specs for that are uninspiring).

maybe it won't look like a teenage girls room threw up on it ? That be great for me

Judging by that render it would instead look like one that's been on the market for over two years

You're not seriously saying that it looks like an iPhone 4/S, do you?

If that's the case, then I guess the Galaxy Nexus looks like an iPhone too, because the front is black and the rest got some silver/gray color. And it's a rectangle.

Clearly, it must be an iPhone clone.
