You guys are just too negative. Ok, the game looks absolutely generic, but it may be fun, especially with friends around. And if it is, I plan on buying two copies of it once it bombs to 10-15 to play coop with a friend.

Hm. Local co-op, and you've redeemed yourself Insomniac.
No, Insomniac happened. This is an EA partners game. Can't blame EA this time.
I see a lot of people jumping to conclusions, ignoring everything EXCEPT the screens. To me, that's not disappointment. That's simply hating on a product.

What have we learned today? That you shouldn't release a trailer until you're ready to show the finalized design.

We also learned that no matter how positive and glowing the previews are, or how exciting the game mechanics are, GAF will overwhelmingly shit on it if it's not from their favorite developer (aka Valve, etc).

Sadly, that's what I'm seeing. Well, some will enjoy it others wont. End of story. We also learned that no matter how positive and glowing the previews are, or how exciting the game mechanics are, GAF will overwhelmingly shit on it if it's not from their favorite developer (aka Valve, etc).

Get outta here, man. That's not the issue at all and you know it. Stop digging for something that simply isn't the issue.

Really? So you're telling me people have been responding to gameplay impressions here the whole time? Or have they simply been saying "oh art style changed lol bomba"?
Find me these posts where people are making clear constructive criticism that doesn't revolve around being fascinated with the art style.

People were equally excited and disappointed. Now they're all just "disappointed" and completely ignoring any gameplay impressions in favor of "generic meh bomba".
A game's aesthetic has a lot to do with people's enjoyment of a game. I don't see how you're apparently some sort of games journalist and don't understand that. Even the developers themselves say the switch to the more realistic style was due - at least in part - to the gameplay, drawing a direct correlation between the gameplay/fun factor and the visuals. :/
The "bomba" comments come mostly from the announced release window, as Insomniac is releasing a generic looking coop game in the same release window as other coop focused games. And from the same publisher nonetheless.

Yet even still, very few are even remotely interested in discussion the game itself, despite all these impressionsI may as well have posted screens and left it at that, this thread would be no different.

Not necessarily serious, this is still a crazy story that goes to crazy locations. That said, we did want to ground it so everything has more punch. There is still a lot of humor, charactrer and story in the game

Dude did you play R2 Co Op mode? Best FPS Co Op mode ever.

If you had done it, nobody would even know what game those screenshots were from.
Do you really think attacking people like this will help your argument?
Aesthetics have always been an important part of gaming. For a year, we only had one piece of media for Overstrike. The most memorable/refreshing element was the art style, and now they've changed it.

With all the Q1 2013 releases, I'm guessing a decent number of otherwise good games will end up bombing simply because its going to be so crowded.March 2013 is a terrible time to release this. it doesn't have a chance imo.
Right.
Just like if I would have posted screens of:
Call of Duty
Battlefield 3
Medal of Honor
Killzone
Gears of War
Spec Ops: The Line
Half-Life 2 episode ???
Crysis
...and tons of other games. I can make this same empty argument for any of your favorite titles. Being a new IP obviously makes it harder to identify, but to those who have seen the original trailer, this is immediately identifiable, as the characters are still strikingly similar.
I'm no games journalist. I was just there as a fan to play the game. Insomniac invited roughly 15 of us.
Aesthetic can only take you so far. Mechanics are much more important, otherwise titles like Tetris, Mario, Bejeweled, Pac-Man, etc, wouldn't be as successful to this day. Mechanics and fun matter most, to me.
Ted Price from Polygon Article said:"When we went in a darker direction, a less comic direction, we were able to do a lot more over-the-top experimentation with the weapons," he says. "We were able to make them look more brutal and do things to enemies that we simply couldn't do with our previous incarnation of the game. It wasn't until we started trying these things that we realized that's where the core fun, in terms of the minute-to-minute combat, lay."

Many people do level the same complaints at all of those series (with the exception of Half Life). Constantly. Have you seriously never noticed this?
That is why Overstrike looked like a breath of fresh air in this regard.
I genuinely feel like enthusiasts here have largely lost their passion for gaming. It has instead been replaced with cynicism, sales obsessions, and an appreciation for the art in games. I'd feel differently if more than 10 people were remotely interested in discussing how the game actually played. Unfortunately, there has been almost none of that, so I'm left to believe that no one really cares about playing the games, just seeing how pretty they are and how well / poorly they sell.
Most of those people are on my ignore list, to be frank. I just feel it is an absurd complaint, particularly when literally dozens of indie games are released weekly with fresh and creative art styles. Folks act like this is ALL we get, when that's seriously not the case. It's just unnecessary disappointment / hate from people who are too cynical. I may as well read Ebert's opinion on video games for goodness sake.

Looks like Insomniac hired a new community manager.
I'm starting to see why they invited you now.
