Seems like most people are bitching about Bayonetta 2 being a WII U exclusive... its like the time when FF13 Xbox360 was announced.

More people getting to play a game != fewer people getting to play a game.

This is more like the Resident Evil Gamecube exclusivity, to be honest.

This is more people getting to play a game (rather, people actually getting to play it at all rather than nobody getting to play it), because before Nintendo stepped in it was cancelled.

It's exciting to see this thread explode. The most encouraging thing about the response to Bayonetta 2 is the sheer magnitude of the feedback. It suggests that a lot of people know and care about Bayonetta. If the announcement had been met with indifference, I'd have been concerned.

I hope this controversy about Bayonetta 2's platform exclusivity builds interest in the game itself so that it's at least as successful as the original. As others have pointed out, this is a fairly low bar to shoot for if Nintendo markets the game well. And as Opiate said, Bayonetta 2's real value to Nintendo might be its strategic potential to lure trend setting developers over to the Wii U. But the main reason I want this game to sell is that Nintendo pulled a bold move here by reviving a niche project. They are aggressively courting gamers whose interests are far removed from the mainstream. Bayonetta 2 is not Wii Music, people. Nintendo is laying the groundwork for a more ambitious, diverse, and innovative next generation. This should be welcomed with enthusiastic support by everyone who was alienated by the Wii's pandering to the casual market.

So true.

Very well said. The fact the game was picked up by Nintendo indicates they are dead serious about getting core gamers attention with Wii U.

Well said. I'm hoping Nintendo revives some other ips too.

really good post.
again, aside from opiate's point on what it brings nintendo, im hopeful for what it brings platinum: they desperately needed a new backer after sega's well for them dried up, and i'm really hoping that this being part of N's effort to reach the core means they'll step outside their usual means and actually advertise for them, which is very much what P+ needs as well.

All that Vanquish talk and people are ignoring the best option: Have Platinum make the next Metroid (based on the Vanqusih template). (apparently that Vanquish talk was pages ago. Thread still moving fast!)

Anyway, started a replay of Bayonetta last night in anticipation. Hype works!

It's not even about reviving IPs/franchises, although that is nice.
It's about creating an environment on their system for these sort of games - both in terms of userbase and developer interest.

This announcement is, I assume, supposed to be a signal that these sort of games will not only be welcome on the platform, but encouraged by the maker.

This is more like people _getting_ a game to play versus there will never be a game.

This is more people getting to play a game (rather, people actually getting to play it at all rather than nobody getting to play it), because before Nintendo stepped in it was cancelled.

Bayo 2's Wii U exclusivity means people get to play the game at all.

Yeah, but the game wouldn't exist without Nintendo though, so its like either some people get to play the game, or no one gets to play it at all.

Well in that case, it's a bit different.

I hadn't been planning to buy a Wii U anytime soon, so naturally I was a little disappointed about this, but you're absolutely right that getting the game on one system > not getting it at all.

Yeah so, I didn't had the time to reply yesterday because I was busy writing news about the Nintendo conferences. Anyway, the backlash of this announcement is hideous. It makes me ashamed to even notion the thought of calling myself a gamer. It is OK to be a bit dissapointed that you won't be playing Bayonetta 2 because you are not planning to buy a Wii U, but some of the outrage is truly sickening. If you want Bayo 2 THAT bad, just buy a Wii U alright? In the end, all systems are worth owning anyway so it won't hurt you that much.

With that out of the way, this is exactly the kind of agressive tactics I want to see from Nintendo. They want to win over their hardcore fanbase again? Fine, show us how its done. They also can't leave it at this, they need to announce a few more partnerships and exclusive hardcore games this and early next year. They have to ensure gamers that yes, you are going to get hardcore games on the Wii U, this is not going to be like the Wii situation.

I was already getting good vibes from the Wii U from a software point of view, but after yesterday, with Bayo 2 and Monster Hunter, I'm getting even better vibes. Wii U feels like a gamers platform, and with two PlatinumGames announced before the console has even launched it actually feels more hardcore than X360 and PS3 right now, fucking lol. This while Nintendo is also trying to keep the casual market satisfied with Wii Fit, Nintendo Land and Sing.

If Nintendo pulls this off, the Wii U can be one of the most all rounded consoles ever. Basically what they wanted the Wii to be. Exciting times!

I can see why people would be annoyed, but I can not interpret the meltdowns to save my life... Jeeze.

Sure we have to buy a new console for it, but it would never had come out on the other consoles anyway.

If you still want to argue after that, then take it up with Sega, Sony and Microsoft :s

Oh, I fully understand that. I'm just hoping they pick up some more things since I recall Iwata saying they plan on partnering up with a few third parties to bring content over to their consoles.

Want Bayonetta 2 to come to PS3 and 360, even though it's being published by Nintendo? Well someone was kind enough to start a petition for you to sign

Maybe your voices will be heard lol

I thought petitions weren't allowed on GAF. (Dark Souls PC seems to be an anomaly there though.)

Yeah, but the game wouldn't exist without Nintendo though, so its like either some people get to play the game, or no one gets to play it at all.

This is pure speculation. What if they simply offered Sega more money than any other publisher to publish a game that was basically finished on PS3/360?

Remember folks

Death threads and millions of F-Bombs but Nintendo fans are supposed to be the most rabid fanbase...

Thanks for proving that theory wrong!

How can you even lose it so much that you resort to death threads? I mean REALLY? This is about a freaking video game. But they act like someone raped their mom.

This is really beyond me.

As a fan of Bayonetta, obviously the fact that Nintendo decided to save it from death is to me, fucking awesome in every way, and so out of left field...I was stunned in my chair, I woke up my roommate because I gasped so loudly when I saw "Bayonetta 2" flash across the screen, and Reggie said "exclusive" my jaw dropped harder than Final Fantasy on 360.

As a strategic move for Nintendo, it's pure brilliance. Obviously Bayonetta 2 is no Halo, but it is in that rare zone of super-niche-hardcore that sells...enough to cover its budget...maybe. But with Nintendo's help, this game can perhaps become the blockbuster franchise that proves once and for all that Platinum is a AAA developer, and that they are in that rare class of studio where everything they touch is golden (...or platinum).

I truly hope this isn't the last we see of Nintendo's 3rd party megaton bombs, I don't think there's ever been one so big, or perhaps it only seems that way because back during the last one, we didn't have (as much) instant communication with everyone all at once like we do now.

But most of all, I hope this is the start of a beautiful partnership between Nintendo and Platinum, and maybe result in Nintendo allowing Platinum to revive a few old IPs...which we all know of course would begin with Starfox if Retro isn't already making one.

That is probably the best/worst part about this entire thing.

Bayonetta isn't remotely this big and it's possible that this one could do even worse then the original.

agrrh i hate it when the action game of the forever being mentioned as a failure, a niche title that only few people cares etc. Even if we put aside how critically adored the game is, there is the fact that it sold close to 2 mil worldwide two platforms combined (and sadly one of the versions is perceived as highly inferior). Yes most of those numbers came from heavily discounted sales but still that's not still far faaaaar away from a total bomba only few people cares.

What if

Until a publisher or Sega comes out and says that, I'm pretty sure it's safe to assume no one wanted to step up and publish it for anything.

hahahah. I just googled the bottom half and saw how he submitted it to Sega.
Bloody hellfire. Embarrassing.

People get up in arms about tropes, representation and stereotypes in games, but this is where the real problem is. Unintelligent, ungrateful and downright insulting members of a certain community. Who the fudge do they think they are?

Don't forget dragon quest. They now have nsmb, monster hunter, cod - all massive sellers. Bayonetta 2 is a niche but important gamers game. Depending on what other third party stuff they get, like zombi u etc, it's clear they aren't mucking around.

Wii U could be to Wii what snes was to nes

It still didn't break even, thus it was technically a failure.

Seriusly.

If Nintendo continues with core game exclusives like this, meltdowns (and absolute hatred) will rise, lol

Shenmue 3 please, Iwata-san make it happen ;)

One would hope that if Nintendo continues this trend, the hatred would subside and people would begin to be excited about the revived IPs... But, you know... NeoGAF.

Kamiya getting back to work instead of tweeting?

whoa

This is the backlash as I understand it, and why I think it's foolish. I welcome correction.

People want PS3/360 versions. Bayonetta was for the PS3 and 360, so fans expect its sequel to be for the same consoles (because they already own one of those) or for their successors (because they actually intend to buy at least one of those) and are upset that it isn’t.
That’s fair, but all indications are that this game was outright cancelled. It wouldn’t exist today if someone didn’t jump in to fund it. In that case, blame Sony or Microsoft or whoever else for not putting up the money before Nintendo did. Non-Wii U versions won’t exist anytime soon, if ever.

Some people will never buy the Wii U, so they’re upset that they can never play Bayonetta 2.
People say “never” a lot. Where does this come from? Why don’t they ever intend to buy the Wii U?

These people would like to play Bayonetta 2, but have no faith in the future support of the Wii U, believe that it’s redundant hardware that will soon be obsolete, and/or have no interest in any other games that have already been announced for it.
To say “never” because of those reasons seems pretty extreme, especially considering the system now has a game that these people want. If they truly want to play Bayonetta 2, then they should just buy the Wii U for this one game, since they likely won’t be able to play it on any other platform.

It’d be foolish for people to buy a console for a single game.
That would be highly dependent upon how much someone would be willing to pay in order to play the desired game, wouldn’t it? That cost of entry is different for everyone.

As an extension of the previous concern, some people are upset with this situation because they don’t have the funds to support more than one system and, as mentioned above, the Wii U is not that one system. Having it on PS3/360 (i.e. they would only need to buy the game) or PS4/720 (i.e. it wouldn’t be the only game they’re interested in on the system) makes more financial sense to these people. Thus, it would not be feasible to purchase the Wii U solely for Bayonetta 2.
What’s stopping these cash-strapped people from waiting until the price drops for both the Wii U and Bayonetta 2? They both will drop eventually. There has to be a point sometime in the future, no matter how far, where the cost of buying both products is worth it for these people to play this single game that they’re passionate about.

Like with all games, though, these people would like to play it as soon as possible.
I personally don’t get the desire to play a game immediately, but if Bayonetta 2 turns out to be sublime upon release, it’s not like it’s going to stop being excellent years down the road. It’s not like <insert favorite game from one or two generations ago> is suddenly worse because of the games and systems we have available now.
Besides, if these people are hoping for a PS3/PS4/360/720 version, considering the current publishing situation, they’ll be waiting a long time for something that might never happen.

TL;DR.
If people want to play Bayonetta 2 as soon as possible, they’d buy the Wii U to do so. If they don’t have the money to support more than one console, or think it’s foolish to buy a console for a single game, they can wait for a price drop to make that cost worthwhile, and then buy the Wii U to do so.
For whatever inexplicable reason, these people instead choose to pout about the lack of other versions and turn their nose up at the one company that was willing to keep a beloved franchise going, foolishly depriving themselves of what could be a wonderful experience.

One would hope that if Nintendo continues this trend, the hatred would subside and people would begin to be excited about the revived IPs... But, you know... NeoGAF.

Bayo 2, highly improved NG3, ZombiU, Black Ops 2, AC3, ME3, Tekken Tag 2, MH3:U. Thats 8 core games from the top of my head for the first 4 month. And i propably forgot some!

Not too bad IMO.

Launch window is covered really well with core games.
