Yeah, from 2009, not from April 2012. It was most likely put on hold while they found another publisher, or still worked on and waiting for someone to foot the bill, which no one did but Nintendo. So, either way, we are still at square 1, Nintendo helped them finish it when no one else did.

Yeah, this is what must have been happened. The first Bayonetta was released on the 360 and PS3. PG most likely went to these two first and none of them were interested and now Nintendo picked the game up. And people are shitting on PG and Nintendo lol. Maybe they should be mad at Sony and MS.

Super interesting. Sounds more like Bayonetta is about to become a full fledged Nintendo franchise instead of them just taking on publishing duties for the sequel.

That crossed my mind too, but I think it might be a stretch. Pretty fucking impressive if true though.

The meltdown culture about this game makes me really hate where games have gone this generation. Suddenly PS3+360 fans are ANGRY that a new console has a game they like. So many of these port-beggers are saying they wouldn't buy a console for one game when the SAME developer has another incredible-looking action game already announced, let alone a broad range of action games on a new console. Quite sad, really.

Again, I don't see any evidence to suggest that that's true. And it seems highly unlikely to me that Sega would decide to cancel the game after two+ years of development (or even put it on hold).

I highly doubt that the franchise will stay exclusive to Nintendo, but Bayonetta 2 definitely seems as though it will. Im sure Platinum will branch it out to other consoles in the future for sequels and things like that if B2 takes off. They are probably legally bound by contract to keep this particular game nintendo exclusive though. Its a very smart move. Nintendo seems to have their shit together with this system despite the poor E3 showing.

Hopefully the dialogue and cutscenes will be better in the sequel.

The first Bayonetta had god-tier gameplay, but probably the worst story and dialogue I've seen in a game. I cringed every time the reporter guy and the little girl were on screen.

Bayonetta 2 is irrelevant to Wii U from the standpoint of sales. It is not a title that appeals to everyone, especially Nintendo's target audience (kids, family), they will not buy that. But it is a big title for hardcore audience, myself included.

And exclusive my balls, Platinum / Sega will release the game on other platforms under another name 'Bayonetta 2 - Director's Cut "or something. If Nintendo will publish the game, there is no reason for Sega to be involved in the game. Sega "advisor" lol...

I assume it's because they own the IP.

Sega owns the IP. There's a reason why EA can't release the first ME on the PS3, because it was published by Microsoft.

Bigger games have been cancelled before you know.
If the money is not there, its not there. Publishers are NOT obligated to gamers to put out certain titles. they will put out what they believe will sell. If Nintendo wants to put money down on a risky endeavor in order to solidify third party relations, then it is a good thing, not a bad thing. If no one else rescued the publishing rights, then the game would sit in development hell for many years until it was either scrapped, adapted to another system, or worse changed to another game entirely. The only truth we know is that Nintendo bought the publishing rights, and now we can enjoy Bayonetta 2 fully funded and coming out a lot sooner.

Why? Sega don't have the money, and games have been cancelled way longer after that. STALKER 2, Insane, MegaMan ( :( ), This is Vegas (which lost Midway 40 million dollars if I remember rightly), Killing Day, True Fantasy Live Online (which was about the same time length of two years).

It happens all the time, and Sega are fucked at the moment, so it would make sense to cancel a game that wouldn't give them money. Look at what their statement was. They want big sales, so they leave that to Sonic, Football Manager and Aliens.

I wonder just how likely this is. Nintendo has been really good to Sega, so I'm not sure if they would want to do that. Or is that the other way around? I know, I know, Capcom 5, but that was a different situation. They weren't directly involved with those titles like this one.

Guess that answers it. Also answers why we wont have a ME trilogy set on Wii U.

Nah, I appreciated the bizarre cutscenes and dialogue.

I hope they continue in that vein. There's always the ability to skip cutscenes!

For all those who missed the statement:

Tatsuya Minami
President & CEO, PlatinumGames Inc.

On September 13, 2012 Bayonetta 2 was announced as an exclusive title under development for the Wii U during the Nintendo Direction presentation held on the same day.
As game developers, we are incredibly excited to be able to announce a new title to all of our fans; however, we are aware that the announcement may have come as a shock to many of you.
As with Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2 is under development and production here at PlatinumGames, and is a true sequel to the acclaimed first game in the series. Bayonetta is one of our most beloved titles, and it played a large part in establishing PlatinumGames as an emerging game studio in the minds of users worldwide. Bayonetta has fans the world over, and we would never dream of alienating them from participating in the future of PlatinumGames.
That being said, the console games market is in a state of upheaval, so establishing a new game franchise requires a considerable amount of will, determination, and love. Bayonetta is a brand that we want to see become stronger, reaching the hands of more and more gamers, so we have continued to consult with SEGA, the previous game’s publisher, on how we can make sure this takes place. Our answer was a new partnership with Nintendo.

Along with their new hardware, Nintendo, as a company, is dedicated to establishing a new future for the games industry, as you can tell by their record of passionate support for gaming. Alongside Nintendo, we hope to grow the Bayonetta brand beyond where it stands today, allowing even more gamers around the world to experience the action of our beloved witch. As developers, we are working hard to make this a reality.
We hope that you will look forward to what we have in store.

Yusuke Hashimoto
Director, Bayonetta 2

I’m Yusuke Hashimoto, director of Bayonetta 2. It has been three years since Bayonetta, a title I was also a part of… I’m incredibly happy to be able to announce that we are working on a sequel. Alongside Bayonetta’s creator, Hideki Kamiya, I’m working on everything from creating a compelling world to character designs (I will be designing the enemies again), and everyone on our talented team is united around the core of Bayonetta, Climax Action, in an effort push the series forward.
For empowering our heroine with incredible new action to introducing new characters (which you may have noticed in the teaser trailer), Bayonetta will further expand on the mythology of the Trinity of Realities – Inferno, Paradiso, and our human world. I can’t wait to take the journey with you.

Hideki Kamiya
Supervisor, Bayonetta 2
Director, Bayonetta
After Bayonetta was released, I was coming back on the bullet train with Yusuke Hashimoto, pondering various ideas for sequels or spin-offs to Bayonetta over a beer. I never thought we’d actually get to announce a sequel to her story, so I am absolutely over the moon.
Even though there has been a bit of a gap since the release of the last game, but I still got lots of request for a sequel from gamers. We were secretly making one the entire time. While I am not the director of this game, I am still supervising the world, story, characters, etc. in close coordination with Hashimoto, and I have been from the very beginning. You have nothing to work about on that end. And of course, plenty of members from the first Bayonetta are on-board and working hard under the direction of Hashimoto, so I look forward to work every day, coming in and seeing all the progress they have made on the game. With new hardware, we look forward to expanding on the Climax Action of Bayonetta, so sit tight and get ready!

The only way Bayonetta is moving to other platforms is if it takes off on Wii U and forces Sega to reevaluate their new strategic vision. Which seems highly unlikely.

Personally I think there is as much chance of a new Fatal Frame appearing on a non-Nintendo platform.

ShockingAlberto is the person I've been mentioning as the only source we need.

GAF verified. Shocked the game was announced. Sega had cancelled it.

From there it looks like no other publisher had interest, and Nintendo did.

I've always liked ShockingAlberto, his unreasonable reasonableness is well... shocking. Sure it's conjecture, but it's not like he's a lying ass.

And I sure don't support you calling him one.

I think Nintendo will treat this well enough to develop a good rapport with Platinum.
They would be smart to do that. Hopefully it wont get the Monado treatment, although that isnt likely since the main fanbase for Bayonetta is in the West. It will certainly be interesting to see where Platinum takers it from here. Certainly what Nintendo has done has gained them a lot of power over Platinum and they might request a Bayonetta 3 exclusive, but thats all speculation for at least several years down the road. The other console makers then come into play and the future becomes extremely hazy.

This is all subjective. P100 looks like a cool, quirky game that I would probably enjoy playing but would not be worth buying a system for and I have no interest in MH, whilst Nintendo's own efforts, in my opinion, are rather pathetic for a console launch. That goes with the near-obsolete amount of RAM for a console (if the PS4/720 don't have at least 4GB then I'll be going PC only) and the unattractive facebook style of the online interface and Nintendo's historic attitude towards this element and their whole gimmicks over graphics direction. As a result, I just cannot see myself paying more than £200 for this console. Perhaps Nintendo will show something amazing in the near future that will compel me to purchase it, but for now, I am simply not interested.

WAT.
Art is subjective but the style fit the theme exceedingly well.

Im well aware im in the minority but the art style and effects really put me off, and was never a fan of witch time. The game look liked someone puked on the screen. I just want it to look cleaner is all so I can appreicate and spend time getting to know the gameplay.

And you have that option! Isnt free choice amazing?

Another thing that is funny is how many claim they 'don't want to spend x amount for one game'. As a lot are stating or implying that they love Platinum, surely they would purchase Wonderful 101 (P-100) as well, making at least 2 WiiU exclusive games they desire?

Well seeing as it is Nintendo that is funding and publishing, we really don't have anything to say. It's either Wii U or nothing, right?

I love all these sad and histerical fanboys :)
Get over it an if you like the franchise just consider getting a Wii U it is that simple.

Maybe they don't find 101 appealing, I certainly don't.

I really don't think Sega would turn down a game that would sell in the millions considering how poorly their other games have sold/are selling. There's nothing more to it. I think it'd be just to drop the matter.

Hey, I'm not calling him anything. But I think there's enough reason for me to doubt that it was cancelled.

I hope nobody's taking this as me being negative towards Nintendo or Platinum (I do plan on buying the game and a WiiU).

I think the case is probably that the developers never stopped working on it, but internally at Sega it was listed as cancelled because nobody was willing to publish it.
Until Nintendo stepped in and kept it funded.

People really need to get this idea out of their mind that Sega's gonna release the would have been dead game on PS3/360. Nintendo is publishing the thing. Just like Mass Effect (the original) won't ever be on anything but 360, this won't be on anything but Wii U. Sequels could be another story but honestly if my IP was in the grave and Nintendo pulled me out, I wouldn't exactly be running to the competition that didn't offer any help.

Like it (like me and most people here), hate it or whatever, but really stop with the "I bet it's gonna be ported" not so stealthy port begging.

Millions? The first one only sold over a million, so it is easy why Sega would pull the plug.

Sure, we can drop that topic, but I don't understand why you can't see Sega's important restructure.

"It's a focus on those four core IP, and in addition that we'll have digital. And digital still means 50 - 75 releases every year, so that's still a big number."

They have no money, so they need sure fire hits to make profit. Bayonetta 2 isn't a sure fire hit to make good money. Football Manager, Sonic and Total War bring them profits every year.

But Mass Effect got a PC version...
