Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

Pahhh, they would wait until us interns were done for the year. Well, maybe that'll be our intern gift next summer.

(Though I can't complain too much, considering we got a pretty sick ultrabook already.)

Yeah you guys got a Samsung Series 9 worth ~$1500. Quit yer bitchin' :-)

Raaaaar totally forgot this thing.. want a Pro so bad. Just give me a price and date so I can throw money at it.

The actual quote:
Q: The iPad has the largest share of the tablet market, but its soft spot, it seems to me, is the price. With the Surface, are you planning to compete with the iPad on price or on features?

A: We haven't announced pricing. I think we have a very competitive product from the features perspective. ...

I think most people would tell you that the iPad is not a superexpensive device. ... (When) people offer cheaper, they do less. They look less good, they're chintzier, they're cheaper.
If you say to somebody, would you use one of the 7-inch tablets, would somebody ever use a Kindle (Kindle Fire, $199) to do their homework? The answer is no; you never would. It's just not a good enough product. It doesn't mean you might not read a book on it....

If you look at the bulk of the PC market, it would run between, say, probably $300 to about $700 or $800. That's the sweet spot.

I want a Pro, but a free RT is not a bad way to wait it out. I have no clue when I'm getting it, outside of somewhere after the 26th of oct, but I have a vacation soon after that and would love to have it by then. The simple fact that I can stick movies and media on an. SD card is going to be crazy useful to me and more importantly my four year old.

God fucking damn Microsoft, give me some info.

I really cannot be fucked to wait till January for Surface Pro, and so I'll be looking at the third party options and seeing which of those will be as close to pro as possible.

Is anyone else here doing the same? If so, what are you going for?

I thought about that, but I'll just wait anyway. Also gives a lot of time to see reviews for everything, what works/doesn't work, etc..

No, I'll wait and get a Surface Pro sometime next year.

I'm waiting for the iPad 4 in March and Surface v2 at the end of next year.

I’m just not seeing Microsoft releasing an all-new version of Surface next year. Their Windows update cycle is quite different from the iOS update cycle. Even Windows Phone seems unlikely to reach number 9 next year, 8.5 is looking more likely from my perspective.

Who knows, maybe Nokia will fill the gap for Surface in 2013?

I don't see how the OS cycle is bound to the hardware release cycle. A year from now, the Surface and Surface Pro is going to be old hardware, it's that simple.

Also, never buy the first revision of a product.

I think a yearly refresh is pretty much a given, assuming they intend to stay in the hardware business.

Do you expect them to be selling a Tegra 3 device when Tegra 5 is out? Hell, the Surface RT is already a bit late in the hardware cycle as it is

Microsoft is going to update Windows on a yearly basis going forward. (or even sooner)

I hate the yearly refresh idea. It always makes me feel like my tech is going to be old and shit in a matter of months, so what's the point? Eh, just me being selfish I guess.

That's how the industry works and it's exactly the reason I didn't buy another iPad 3 after I lost it a month after launch. I have the money to buy a new one, but it's old tech at this point. I'm eagerly awaiting the rumors about the 4.

And of course they're working on the next Surface.

Are you passionate about building cool devices and technologies? The Surface Team focuses on lighting up Microsoft experiences with touch first computing. A fundamental part of our strategy is having desirable and powerful devices that enable the experiences people want, and elicit their excitement. Creating these devices involves a close partnership between hardware and software engineers, designers, and manufacturing. We are currently building the next generation and Surface needs you!

Role & Opportunity:

We are looking for a Sr. Engineer to focus on next generation surface which will require deep understanding of power modeling/supply distribution/startup sequencing and alternative power sources. A strong mix of technical breadth and depth will allow you to work cross-functionally with different disciplines (Industrial Design, Mechanical, Electrical, Thermal, Software and Firmware) to develop compelling innovative products. You will design and develop circuits, select key strategic components; and develop power models that encompasses the entire product. Key responsibilities:

And that job post is from August, well after the reveal.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, or bad for the industry, I'm just saying it sucks from the point of someone who likes the newest tech I guess. Eh, I don't know, like I said probably just me being selfish.

Sell the old version a week or two before the new one comes out, buy the new one at launch.

I'm on a 2 year cycle and it works well enough for me.

technology has always been fast moving

Whats wrong with selling and buying new gear every year. Alot of apple and android fans do that.

Want new toy? Just pay for it.

technology has always been fast moving

Not like this though. Smartphones/Tablets are roughly doubling in power every year. I can't think of any other area of technology that has grown that fast.

Though I expect it to slow down a lot in the next few years

You must not have been around in the early 90s then.

Dude, seriously there's a freakin law for this.

Has mobile accelerated a bit faster? Maybe due to power optimization. Haswell is going to make very fast, long battery life mobile computing widely available next year.

But to the 90s specifically:
1. Early 90s
2. Late 90s: PSX, N64, DVDs, internet

Yeah, things were changing fast

I'm trying to decide if I want a W8 laptop or the Surface. I'll mainly be using it for school and note-taking.

Personally, I'd go with Surface. I think it makes standalone laptops and tablets obsolete.

But regardless wait for Intel's new processor. It's way more power efficient than Ivy without sacrificing performance.

The Seattle Times Microsoft reporter that did the Ballmer interview posted some cut out questions and one of them was about the pop up stores and Ballmer did confirm that the 32 pop up Microsoft Stores will be selling Surface.

So I guess there will be at least 63 stores selling the Surface in the US/Canada if no other retailers pick it up.

If they are selling those things for $600, they might as well not bother.

surface RT will be $400 at the minimum. I expect it to be $500+ though.

I swapped my MacBook for an iPad+Linode (2011)

iPad + Linode, 1 Year Later (2012)

You see, a surprising alternative has appeared: the Microsoft Surface.

Surface + Linode 512

For a while now I’ve been telling people that Microsoft will become the new cool, the inventive underdog, and I still believe that. Windows 8 may be a huge gamble for Microsoft, but Windows 8 RT is a clear win for me.

Microsoft understands the keyboard. I can start, switch and control apps without leaving the keyboard. The device even comes with one.

Sometimes it’s really nice to have two windows open, especially when using video output to a larger monitor. I think the Windows 8 side-dock idea will suit me very well.

Love or hate Internet Explorer 10, I have every expectation that we’ll see the real rendering engine on Windows RT. I don’t care what they call it, if I can run LightTable and Google Docs without gouging my eyes out, I’ll be happy.

Last but not least, the Metro vibe feels fresh and new and I’m intrigued by Microsoft’s choice to make Javascript + HTML5 a first-class way to develop for the system. I’m already looking forward to hacking my own tiles together to smooth my workflow and simplify my day.

Perhaps in a year’s time I’ll be switching to another client. It doesn’t matter, and that’s the beauty of this setup - its flexibility. For me, though, this coming year will be the year of the Surface...

That hype o_0

This thread is abusive. Everytime it's bumped I think "price was announced!" :(
the price probably wont be announced till the oct 25th event where Microsoft will probably say its so and so price and available at midnight. It might leak before that but i dont expect a official price till that event. Well for the arm based surface that is. I doubt we get the intel surface price any time soon.

So will MS not advertise this product? If they will, they'll do it without mentioning the price....? What a strange product release this is, no price announcement, no full specs reveal, we don't even know if it'll even be sold at retail stores or online only.

of course they will advertise it (they already are with those street ads btw). I don't see a reason for them to begin their major ad campaign till it releases though and they have said already that it will be sold in Microsoft Retail stores and online.
