Star Wars fan anime

Phenomenal. It reminds me of the direct to video DC animated movies (most notably the colors), which is fantastic for one guy.

The problem is that this is still an incomplete project; in fact, Paul 'OtaKing' Johnson (or 'Otay King') has taken down himself the latest version uploaded (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPkVruTiStY) while still asking for feedback, like he did on previous months and you can read in here:

As it was explained, this came as a project to experiment with "rotoscoping over 3D" (http://archive.foolz.us/m/thread/7492895/#7494141). I quite appreciate the overlay for those special effects he added lately as a tribute, though.

Yeah, I think Lucas deserves the flack he gets (honestly he deserves even more, film revisionism is disgusting) but the way it pops up in any Star Wars thread is kinda weird. Like, what does he have to do with this?

I don't know why it has to happen, but it has become extremely obnoxious.

I can't really enjoy SW threads anymore. Not because of Lucas, but the people who must constantly bring up his deficiencies - unprompted - and ruin everybody's time with bad memories.

I'll have to give credit where it is due: he's pretty fucking good at making 3D models look like 2D animation, far better than most people who try doing that. He could probably do some pretty good work on a cel-shaded video game. I'd go as far as to say that he does a better job than certain professional studios (though admittedly he had more free time to get all the lighting and whatnot right). I also like his colors, and some of his compositions look cool. However, it's pretty obvious that his 2D animation has a lot of issues (though significantly less noticeable in this video, since it's full of 3DCG), especially given that he's in his mid-30s and has been drawing and animating for a pretty long time.

Normally, I wouldn't be dissecting someone who's just making free cartoons for the Internet to such an extent. But Otaking is a special case. For years on end, he's been shamelessly trolling everyone with his 'superior animation taste' in order to become a controversial online figure and draw attention to his work. I think it's blatantly obvious that he doesn't truly believe a lot of his nonsensical ~ANIME EXPERT~ statements (especially given that he's contradicted himself in the past), but he does believe SOME of it, and it's getting in the way of his improvement as an animator. He wants to bring back the feeling of 80s OVAs and movies like Gunbuster and Wings of Honneamise, but he'll never do that because he doesn't understand the subtleties of good movement.

Yeah, I noticed the CGI, and as you guys say, it blends better than usual because of the non-realistic lighting applied to it. The rotoscoping thing also makes sense, it's a smart way to give the look of hand-drawn mechanical animation while avoiding the painful work of drawing it from scratch.

I don't think it's amazing or anything, but I'd honestly rather have Otaking colors than a lot of the crappy washed-out anime that gets made these days.

http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/4/45151/1971021-persona4a_37.jpg I mean, stuff like this is just sad to look at.

To be fair, the Persona 4 anime is a cheap cash-in at best.

Actually, now that I think about it, the amount of time spent on a 3D model can make a HUGE difference if you want to integrate it into 2D animation. Symbionic Titan is a good example; some of the "monsters of the week" looked pretty out-of-place, because they simply didn't have that much work put into them as a result of being one-episode throwaways. Meanwhile the main robot's model actually looked pretty freaking great and didn't really feel out-of-place within the cartoon's world, because it had lots of care put into it.

...meanwhile, all the 3DCG in the new Evangelion movies sticks out like a sore thumb. So I dunno.
Well, that's a bad show. It's not like colors are the only thing wrong with it.
There's a lot of modern shows that I just find really bland as far as colors go. The new Hunter x Hunter for one. It even has ugly 'typical teenage Deviantart kid'-quality airbrushed shading sometimes.

I so want a proper Star Wars anime, remaking the original trilogy. Holy shit that would be the best thing ever.

That was a great fan anime short.

An anime remake? Eh, I'd rather have them tell some new stories. They should set the series in between the two trilogies like the planned TV series will. Actually they should just make the TV series an anime.

Well, I'd say the problem is not having a coherent vision of how to integrate 3D and 2D. The CGI in the Rebuild movies seems to focus more on being "cool" than attempting to look like traditional animation.

What do you think of the colors in Yuru Yuri? I think that's one of my favorite shows recently as far as colors go. Nice, warm, pleasing.

Also, speaking of 'typical teenage Deviantart kid'-quality, what did you think of the way lines were rendered in Kids on the Slope? It pretty much ruined the show for me -- those consistently thick dark lines with drop shadows and stuff just looked terrible. Looked like an amateur Photoshop painting for the entire show.

ps you need to post in the animethread more so I don't have to veer off topic in threads you actually pop in to ;_;

It's probably worth noting that getting CG to look good next to 2D (or in an otherwise-2D work) is easier for 'bullet time'-type sequences with little movement, and for mechanical things. Facial animation can look particularly robotic and crappy with 3D CG: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hHuSaWROLM#t=25m55s

It would probably be super-awkward and funny if Otaking tried to animate CG humans.

It looks fine, nothing really bad about it. I never watch shows like that though (not 'shows with lesbians in them' but 'cute girls doing cute things' shows).

It bothered me at first, but I got used to them eventually. Obviously the show didn't look as awesome as Bebop and Champloo, but the 'Deviantart-esque' elements felt more like they were part of a reasonably well-planned out and idiosyncratic style and less like "look mom I just got Photoshop!!!"-syndrome.*

I will once I start watching anime again. Haven't been in the mood for it (or anything at all beyond making rambling internet posts ;_;).

Great stuff. They need to make this a series ASAP.

Yep. I'd prefer a Rogue Squadron-esque story but from the Empire's side. While it could definitely show Tarkin and Vader and other characters from the movies, and should be during the OT timeline, I'd prefer original stories focused on aerial dogfights, relationships between pilots, and bounty hunters. Something mature and not for kids.

I love the guy's vibrant colors, the fast paced action, seeing faces under the helmets etc. This is just total badass. Maybe I'm so enthralled with it because I've never actually watched anime. Still don't care to, but if it was Star Wars I'd be there day one.

Really nice, style reminds me more of 80s anime OVA series like Bubblegum Crisis (particularly the beginning of episode 5, Moon Rambler) or other series/works done by Artmic Studios, such as the 3 Captain Power animated missions.

I can't see a Tie Bomber taking down 3 X-wings and a Y-wing in one salvo. Just can't.

Other than that, pretty cool. And I don't even like anime.

Awesome. I haven't read the rest of the thread, but it looks like he's relying very heavily on rotoscoping and it's not doing him any favors. Still looks visually cool though. The kind of timing and spacing you see in rotoscoped work always really grates on my nerves.I'm not specifically talking about just the ships being animated that way either, if he's not directly rotoscoping his characters he needs to really loosen up and experiment with his spacing. It feels very mechanical and even.

That being said, I really wish anime still looked like this. *sigh*

I don't think he's rotoscoping his characters, but the ships are rotoscoped over CGI.

His character animation is substantially better than on his Dr. Who short, but that's not saying much. It still leaves a lot to be desired, and I wish he would spend more time getting that right than painstakingly overshading everything.

That's why I love 80's anime. 90's is almost up there but it had that annoying sharp chins and weird eyes.
