So I saw a english lyrics video for this.

Maybe it was a bad translation, but turns out the lyrics make it to be just shitty cliched sappy love song #5475646756786789

A lil disappointing. Thought he was singing about being a gangster badass or sumthin.

You need to read The Atlantic article explaining the song.

Meanwhile in the UK (and note that non-English songs simply do not sell at all here):

Maybe it's because it's on the B list for Radio 1. On the overall chart, it was 16th as of Wednesday, and it's going to be interesting how well it does comes the full chart tomorrow (although I doubt that it's going to top The Script x will.i.am). Point is, this is the most popular song that's not in English over here for years.

It's a social critique. Do you really think that the words translate directly like that?

What translation were you reading? It's not a love song at all.

Read this.

One of the guys I work with randomly cracks out OP OP OPPA GANGNAM STYLE every couple of hours and it cracks me up every single time.

I just bought two copies of the PSY6 Disc :D.

For the interested, it's hit No.3 in the UK singles charts behind The Script and Example.

so i was talking to my australian (non-korean) friend who is basically last to everything... last to get a mobile (2005), last to get broadband (2008) and he's into this song now...

even the prime minister did a gangnam style dance

shit has gotten sad...

and i heard it on the radio... does the first asian hit have to be some wacky dude? I thought we were living in 2012.... sad that asia has been producing some great entertainment music/movies/TV in the last 30-50 years and this is the song western audiences have picked up....

regardless i still want it to beat JB on YT - it probably won't, but i hope it does...

People like the dumbest things. This video does nothing for me, and the fact this video is breaking records on youtube shows how sad things are getting. Idiocracy here we come.

Yes, the reason people enjoy the song/video is because the world is getting dumber, not because people think it's a catchy song with an amusing video. Please.

What was the last song to reach the number #3 spot or higher in the UK charts that isn't in English? We're probably talking 5+ years ago easily. Wonga has been made.

Wow, even Ai Se Eu Te Pego earlier this year didn't chart in the UK, while it hit #1 around Europe. Weird.

PS. Whelp, 5 million within Call Me Maybe. It's going down tonight.

Did you watch his other videos and concerts? The guy is a great entertainer. He made a crazy video, with a super catchy beat, and a fun dance that gets so many people to do it. He's part Michael Jackson, part "Without Me" Eminem, of course he's going to be liked. Sure not all his songs are this way, but the thing is many of them actually stand out among any cultures acts. A lot of the other Kpop isn't too far off from stuff elsewhere, thus why it hasn't taken off like this guy.

People in your opinion should be happy though. It's going to get a lot of people to branch out and search for other artists/acts there now. More of them are going to get a chance to break out and get the spotlight.

Nothing wrong with some good, light hearted music regardless.

FINALLY got to do the horsey dance at a party. And it was just as glorious as I imagined it.

This song makes me wish I could still go clubbing in Seoul or Busan. Fuck, those were the days. Even podunk Daegu was amazing on the right nights.

What's wrong with people liking fun things? We have to be serious all the time?
Hey, lots of people think football is dumb.

They had this song playing at the Colts game Sunday. Nobody outside of the cheerleaders knew what the hell was going on or how to dance to it. Kinda sad, really.

weird. like i said a couple pages back, i was at a pro sporting event the other day and it seemed like eeeeeeeverybody knew it. :\

Good, but I think Yellow Magic Orchestra is probably a better example of an asian hit in the US. I was always under the impression they were one of the most successful imports.

Influential among artists perhaps, but I can't find anything that suggests they've had a single as successful as Sukiyaki.
