Is GAF too strict?

Calling trans people "faggots" like you do in the fighting game gaf IRC isn't illegal either, and most people would agree that it shouldn't be illegal, but it'll get you banned.
Don't mind Saty, he just hates it when certain groups don't know their place.

Saying nigger isn't illegal per se, but saying nigger directed at someone is (here in Brazil). It is covered by the penal code as qualified slander.
^ Same for the above and wow...
But just saying ni@@er ni@@er ni@@er ni@@er ni@@er

Not at anyone is all good?

Depends, where would the person be mantra'ing nigger? If in a public space, and in the event that someone decides to call the cops on you, you might get from a slap on the back of the head and told to stop being dumb, to actually being prosecuted and probably paying a fine or community service.
I believe it would be a stretch to racial slander judicially, but I think it could happen?

Dennis, lush and Psychological Intellect...

They aren't perma'd though right?

I can't imagine Dennis would get perm:ed for what he wrote in that thread alone, unless he's been stirring up shit in many other threads lately.

How was Dennis' post out of line, just curious? There must have been more.

EDIT: Oh, I didn't see he edited the post, there might have been something there beforehand that warranted it.

This tired shit again? How many times you gonna bring up the same lame incident that didn't even happen on GAF?

You can always bring up when Timedog started spewing bile over Juicebox during some tournament here on gaf. That did get him banned iirc.

Meh, I don't give a shit what Timedog said about someone who will never know and he doesn't hate. Same as I really don't care what most people say in general. TD doesn't seem to be a hateful person, so I don't think he was trying to demean or show his hate for others. Saty isn't either. It's usually easy to tell when someone means something actually hateful and when words are just words.

Granted this is more difficult in only text form like we are dealing with here, but after knowing people for a longer period of time you can tell when they aren't saying what they said to put down entire groups of people.

jesus, people actually ask to get banned.... is it because they have exams or some irl shit to take care of? you can still view gaf when you're banned, right?
You can, but for some people if they can't contribute they don't bother browsing the site.

Jesus, I knew I didn't like him, but that is fucked up.

Unless he gets banned for off GAF behaviour I don't see the problem. Guy deserves to be mocked for being a bigot.

Oh, and remember that Squiddy was just linking to posts as confirmation that they were banned; that is not necessarily the post that got him banned or necessarily one that contributed to the ban.

I say that October 2nd shall hereby be known as 'The Make Fun of Saty for Being a Bigot Day'.

We can all wear special hats and go around making fun of bigots.

People surprised Sentry didn't get banned? Why the hell would he have?

No, that post isn't too edited from the original, though he had others that were worse. Sexist comments be sexist, mang.

I never understood this either. People are so addicted to GAF that they have to ask to be banned? You can't just stop coming here for a while? :lol

You still don't have them for the duration of the ban, though, so it makes browsing and keeping up with topics less convenient, particularly without Search.

True story, I only started using Subscriptions 3 weeks ago.

Needless to say, it was a revelation.

I also think the reason why someone is banned and for what post should be shown. Look at Something Awful, it says in big text under a post USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST and you click on it for an explanation of why. People don't derail threads discussing it and it gives everyone a clearer picture of what the rules are.

This is a terrific idea. Any reason why GAF doesn't do it?

Not that you should necessarily be expected to have read every single post of this massive thread, but this is a non-starter that has been answered many times over. The moderation here doesn't feel that this encapsulates their reason for banning, as stating that "user was banned because they broke Rule X with Post Y" doesn't shed the proper light on the situation. The feeling is that often, pulling the ban trigger is a cumulative process. Pointing to one specific post or one specific violation of the ToS doesn't tell the whole story.

Probably because a single post isn't always the smoking gun as to why a user gets banned. Sometimes it's just the last straw, or an accumulation of past posts, sometimes even in multiple threads.

I liked that idea too, but if it can't be applied to all bans it sort of becomes pointless tbh. Still, it would be nice if we get a distinction between prem'd bans and mere suspensions in the next GAF redesign.

[edit] beaten by a millisecond. ;p

Why not state " user was banned for this and many other cumulative offences up to this post" then?

Well, the other part of the equation is that, clearly, there just isn't any desire to be completely transparent in regards to moderation. And that sentence is not meant to be read as criticism or praise; it is what it is.

Why not state " user was banned for this and many other cumulative offences up to this post" then?

Because it's more work that the mods don't need and would add to the whining that already goes on about bans.

"He was banned for that? COME ON BISH! HAVE A HEART!"

No thanks.
