But he didn't crush Obama. Obama easily beat him in healthcare.

Barely, but got crushed on every other topic, he kept his mouth shut on everything that hurt Romney yet Romney did the exact opposite

This is like Kerry getting destroyed by bush in the debates

The problem is that you can't concisely refute so much garbage. What Obama needs to do more is keep harping on the fact that Romney does not give specifics and has no real plans.
It was already almost entirely a back and forth between "you have no plans" and "shut up yes I do" without him harping.

I haven't really participated within PoliGAF since the last election, and I've forgotten how alarmist people can get. I can't imagine living with such fragile expectations towards everything.

Romney did absolutely nothing to reverse 99% of the criticisms lobbied at him on a daily basis, and until he does, Obama is 95% guaranteed to win this election. And yes, those percentages are as BS as Romney's comments tonight.

I agree, we gotta put this in perspective. If I recall correctly, Kerry did better than Bush in the 04 debates.
Kerry destroyed Bush on both style and substance.

I think Romney "won" this debate, but his pushy, smarmy style will be offputting to many undecided voters.

What I don't understand is why Obama absolutely used NONE of the obvious attacks?

Bain, 47%, hitting back on the 716b, the flip-flopping, etc etc... he kept literally almost every one of the big campaign narrative attacks in his quiver. Why? There were several opportunities where Mitt Romney literally opened himself to these attacks, and... nothing.

Obama has got to be being coached on attacking for the next debate.

Probably waiting until after the vice presidential debate, who knows how the Ryan vs. Biden debate is going to turn out. Use the strong points later in case of a bad screw up by Biden.

Also, being soft in the first debate lets him and his staff see how Romney's going to talk and what his plan of attack is. Now he's seen how Romney will approach the debates and knows how to strike back.

Obama was like this in 2008, too. He's always been really relaxed and almost stoned in these debates. He's more concerned about not looking like an angry black guy than anything else.

Eventually both Clinton and McCain exploded on themselves in some form of rage or looking confused.

Welcome beautful toddler, Madison Elizabeth, to the horde!
This was the same thing in 2008. Obama is professorial and can't be acting like the angry black man on television. That said, I do anticipate him being more on the attack during the next debate. The content from Obama was there, just needs to nail the delivery and presentation. That said, let's wait until the polls from this debate start rolling in.

Schmidt dead on. Romney just dominated the conversation.
Yep.

Makes me wish that these debates weren't so damned constrained into their little 90 minute thunderdomes. Sit both of these guys down on some comfy chairs, give them some water, and at least twice the time to has these things out. Start the ball rolling with a topic and let them go at it only using the moderator to keep people from diverging wildly off topic, not as keeper of the clock.

Who are these fabled people that are going to switch to Romney after watching this debate? He didn't detail any plan for anything. Where was the content?

I know I'm irritated, but I acknowledge that this alone won't change the election. Obama just needs to go back, rethink his debate strategy, and hit Romney where it hurts in the next two debates.

I cant take these channels seriously anymore. This was pretty much the tipping point. Watching them meltdown over one debate. What happened to their professionalism? Some nerdy ass dude on MSNBC talking about illuminati shit. Come on man.

Here's my last comment, Neither Mitten's or Obama has said how they will create jobs when there is no demand in the market place to support new companies new jobs. Where are you going to create demand.

Romney is unlikable and you all know it because you follow politics. There are millions of people who got their first full dose of Romney tonight, and it was a Heisenberg level hit of full-on smarmy bullshit and rudeness.
Obama went on yet another of his explain-a-thons and looked like the adult in the room again. This is what he does. He's the same guy no matter whatever else is going on, and it drives his opponents (and supporters!) nuts.
Uninformed America didn't see what GAF saw. Uninformed America just got sold a '93 Grand Am and was told it was really a Lexus. In a few hours they're going to realize what they drove home and get pissed about it.

you have to start laying the groundwork, though. There was so many missed opportunities, and there didn't have to be.

I agree with you, I just think that Obama was saving his ammo and he will definitely use it all in the next two debates. It'll be bad if he stays in this position in the future, though.

It was already almost entirely a back and forth between "you have no plans" and "shut up yes I do" without him harping.

Obama only mentioned that Romney had given no plans somewhere in the second half of the debate, and he was a bit long winded about it. Something like a concise, "once again, you have not given any specifics," and then proceeding with his respinse would be nice.

LOL @ everyone melting down. I'm standing by my prediction that these debates won't change the game much. People are more polarized than ever and have decided on who they'll vote for regardless of the debates.

Romney's content is in the same universe where you can find the genuine Wall Street regulation that Obama claims he's now put in place.

Well, I have never seen Obama look so flustered and unprepared. That was a slaughter. Guaranteed this debate is going to be positioned as a win for Romney.

And the sad thing is it didn't have to be. Romney was being vague and flat out lying through most of that debate, but he got away with it because he spoke aggressively, passionately, confidently and, most importantly (and take notes for next time, Obama), Romney spoke CONCISELY. Obama's got my vote and I believe that based on what was presented he's got the better approach to the topics discussed, but damn not even I can deny that he came off as a blubbering idiot next to Romney tonight. Even his good moments were hampered by uhhs and excessive pauses.

I mean, damn, I was screaming at my screen when Romney mentioned grading schools as a primary incentive to improve performance. Completely ridiculous idea that completely disregards the reality that many Americans (particularly inner-city Americans) who don't have the option to easily switch their children's schools face. "Oh, the high school in our neighborhood got an F? Guess you're going to Fucking Failure High since I can't afford to ship you off to a better private school or forge an address so you can go to a better school in a better neighborhood. Sorry, Susie."

This entire post is flawless.

For most of the debate, it looked like Romney was about to cry although he did sound confident (I guess, fake it till you make it).

Obama lost this debate as much as I hate to admit. He shouldn't have talked too much about Obamacare and should've made hits to Romney (by the 47%, Bain, etc.)

His performance was his content. That's what he needed to succeed with.

That used car salesman seems awesome until you learn everything he said was a lie. As the fact checking rolls in the conversation is going to be about lies, not aggression and salesmanship. Watch the trend people.

The only thing Obama did well was argue Medicare; he clearly won that segment. Outside of that he looked completely unfocused, rambled, and just seemed out of it. There were multiple stories about the campaign trying to shorten his answers during prep debates, and it's clear Obama did not listen.

Perhaps the strategy was to simply play prevent defense and not make noise. Romney exposed himself to multiple attacks on the 47% video, to asking him to name some deductions he wants to get rid of, etc etc and Obama didn't throw a punch.

So just like every other day.

Lol, this. CNN is always ridiculous. In general, and not just in regard to tonight, this country needs to learn that being "fair and balanced" means being objective, and that it doesn't mean giving each side equal time even when one of the side's arguments are bullshit.
