Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

Wait....the RT version comes out on the 26th, and there is still no price? What the fuck?

From The Verge...

Microsoft's Surface tablet, which will launch at midnight on October 25th, is a test bed for a number of different approaches from Microsoft this holiday season. Microsoft has been evaluating ways to sell the tablet alongside subscription services or bundled-in packages at its Microsoft Stores. The approach could mean we'll see a low-priced Surface tablet with a subscription model that mirrors a similar one for the company's $99 Xbox 360.

I'm guessing because of this, they have to wait for the big blow out announcement with details of Xbox Music and everything else. We should probably expect an Apple-like announcement of price/details and near-immediate release.

I came across a MS store in Boston, was kinda OK. Like an Apple Store knock off, but with less style. I don't even really like Apple all that much, but their products are much better suited for being displayed together than the different stuff MS has assembled. Much more visually coherent.

Ugh, Apple is just as dumb with that shit. The only thing to their credit is that they make pretty much the same thing every year, so you know what the price is going to be. Some people need time to prepare to actually put away funds for your product.

Well, we've got a general price range for it based on what they've told us and what the competition is priced at, so that should give people an indication of how much they should be putting away. Just assume the iPad price.

Out of curiosity, has there been any talk about if the Tegra 3 in the Surface RT is the new one in the hTC One X+ (I'd hope so)?

I think its using clover tail. Check the OP.

At what point will we get concrete details about these devices? Does MS have any press conferences on the books before the Windows 8 Launch, or will they divulge everything during that fanfare and release right after?

25th of October there is a Windows 8 and Surface launch event. That is where we will most likely see details like the Price etc...

The soonest it would probably be if it wasn't on that date would probably be next week, but I haven't heard of any rumors of a event.

I'd love to hear this line:

"...and it's available online and at Microsoft Stores right now!"

And then immediately see hundreds of bloggers and "tech journalists" (corporate bloggers) pull out their Apple and Android phones to find out where the fuck the closest Microsoft Store is.

They need to announce the Pro price. I cant wait for pro if I dont know the price. But I feel, once I buy an inferior product, they announce the pro for the same price. gnarl. Decisions suck

I think MS kind of break itself having so many projects coming out around the same time.

* Windows 8 (Oct)
* Metro interface (Oct)
* Windows RT (Oct)
* WP8 (Nov)
* subscription model for Office (I don't when, very soon?)
* MS retail stores (OK this is not new, but the prop up stores are definitely new)

May have miss one or two things

Is it me or everyone of there projects is under promoted? What do you guys thinks?

Metro interface seem to be the most important thing out of all of them, since its the single project that glue all the new projects together. Now they don't even have a name? What's the new name now? Donno, ask Steve.

I'm not sure whether to be happy or sad microsoft announced this so early and then has left me hanging on any further details, it's prevented me from giving in to just buying some other tablet just yet , but dang it if patience isn't wearing thin.

Besides getting a thorough hands on from a reputable site. One of the major things I'd like to see is exactly how much space does WinRT take by default (How much user addressable space is available out of the box). Windows isn't exactly the skinniest operating system. I'd love to see how much fat is trimmed out of the OS when you don't have to have so much backwards compatibility built in.

? What does that mean? I can't install regular applications like steam? Sorry I don't know Windows 8 too well.

You can only install apps from the Marketplace in Windows 8 RT. It's closer to an iPad than a PC. Surface Pro will be the full desktop experience, but that will arrive a few months later.

And you're not the only one who doesn't know this. MS will be in some deep shit with all that confusion in the next few months.

You can't install existing desktop applications that were compiled for the x86 / AMD64 instruction sets (nearly every windows application you are familiar with today).

Wow that's kinda lame. Is there any information on if you can upgrade from RT to Professional when it's out?

No you can't, because they're made for different hardware (ARM processors).

It wouldn't be a problem if MS was more open about all it. Call it something different. Windows Light or whatever.

From the OP. The one you didn't read.

Windows RT = ARM (Windows Store Apps + Limited Desktop Apps (Desktop Apps limited to Windows Utilities (Explorer, Paint etc...), Office Home and Student 2013 (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, OneNote) (Office is included, is a Desktop App) and Internet Explorer 10. (Windows RT will only run Windows Store Apps outside of those few Desktop Apps) (only sold to OEMs)

Windows 8 = x86/x64 (Windows Store Apps + Desktop Apps) (will run all of your existing Desktop Apps plus the new Windows Store Apps) (two versions at Retail, Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro. $40 upgrade price till the end of January)

Windows 8 is not Windows RT and vice versa.

The first Surface has an ARM CPU and is similar to the iPad or other Android tablets.
The second Surface, the Surface Pro, is basically an Ultrabook without the keyboard. Full PC hardware and compatibility. It's also going to be more expensive and won't be released until next year.

Seriously, read the OP. That's why Windu wrote it.

They call it something different. They just chose a terrible name - Windows RT.
