The Netflix Recommendation Thread of Dope Movies

Indie Game is really good.

I watched this with my wife the other night (who doesn't really care about gaming), and she was quite interested. I enjoyed it. Edmund is such a cool guy.

The directing is great. It's made so that way anyone can watch it and get an understanding of it.

Edmund does seem like a really cool, down to earth type of guy. Tommy is a little less relaxed but I really respect his discipline and motivation.

As for Phil Fish, he really doesn't seem like such a bad guy. He just said something that people misinterpreted and now he gets tons of shit for it. I feel bad for him.

I don't know. There was more than just that. Someone who is friends with the guy on the other side of the Phil Fish argument in the movie said that they made Phil look like the good guy. Then there was the other thing that he said about not patching a game breaking bug in Fez because it costs too much to implement the patch. Meh.

So, I hear great things about Spaced, but I tried to watch it a few years ago and just couldn't get into it after the first few eps. When does it start to pick up? I might try again. I'm a big fan of their other works, just couldn't get into Spaced.

It doesn't really "pick up" to be honest. It's got the same tone all the way through. I loved it, but if it didn't click with you, it probably won't any further on. It gets tighter and a little more put together visually, but it's pretty much the same all the way through.

Is 50/50 up on US Netflix? I just noticed it was up on the UK service which was a nice suprise, but I have my xobx set up for the far superior US service. Although the US is missing It's Always Sunny in Philadelpia too which is so weird because that show doesn't even air in the UK.

House of Cards coming in Feb. I don't understand Netflix's business strategy of putting up entire seasons of their original series up at once.

Is this the original BBC series? I remember (re)watching this a while ago on Netflix. The first season was definitely the best.

They weren't bad, Gina was just boring and not very engaging as an actress. I think a different lead would have made a big difference.

Trying to think of another actress who could have pulled off the scenes with equal authenticity (there's somethings that still can't be faked convincingly to the jaded eye) while also being a better actress in this role..

It's not a good movie, but it will have introduced Gina to a new audience (like me) who wouldn't watch MMA.

I agree it's a bad movie. Gina to me, just doesn't have a future as an actress and I would have preferred a more feminine lead and direction. Not sure if it would have made that much of a difference but it would have made it more watchable for me. Take Salt for instance, a similar movie and also not very well received, but Angelina made it memorable and I enjoyed it.

Anyway, watched this today

Not sure how accurate it is, but I thought it was pretty good.

I made it half of the way through Indie Game before those guys really depressed the hell out of me. My empathetic side makes it too difficult to watch people suffer the way they suffered.

I watched Haywire and Get The Gringo last night.

Haywire is awesome as fuck whenever Gina isn't speaking. She's a terrible actress, but her fight scenes make up for it and she didn't really have a lot of lines anyway. It was interesting that they filled the movie with legitimately great actors (Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Bandaras), seemingly to make up for her. I like it. Had a lot of style. Felt very British.

Get The Gringo was great. It was Mel Gibson being his awesome Mel Gibson character. Really, really enjoyed it. Made me wish that he could get back to just doing movies instead of going crazy and getting blackballed for a couple years at a time. He's still got it. I desperately want him to have a true comeback. He should be in The Expendables 3 if one gets made.

Yeah, it makes absolutely no sense from a business perspective. I know this sounds crazy, but I would rather them stagger it at least somewhat.

I'm only three episodes deep into Nikita, but it's really good stuff. I'm a huge fan of Burn Notice and am getting similar vibes from it. Don't recall anyone recommending it before in this thread, but I definitely do.

I think the reason they arent going to stagger the release, is the same reason they gave for why they dumped all the episodes of their first original show out, their customers like to be able to watch shows in marathons, they like to blow through 4 seasons of a show in a weekend and then whine that there isnt anything to watch on Netflix...

I sort of made up that last part...

Well that's exactly my point, especially with new subscribers. I can easily see people signing up for the free trial as a one time thing just to watch the new Arrested Development then canceling. Wouldn't it be better to do a weekly release so that it raises the probability that the customer will explore the rest of the catalog and become more likely to continue their subscription through the trial period. It also kills the prolonged water cooler buzz effect that would help promote the shows and service for a longer period of time.

It doesn't make sense from a customer retention standpoint.

There are some oddities like that. Eg the US Netflix has UK Top Gear, but not the US series. Licensing deals in a so called globalised world are complete bullshit.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the show Alias has been added to Netflix. I used to love this show but I never saw the final season. Going to start watching it from the beginning.

I also watched The Tall Man and that movie was not what I expected. I thought it was going to be more of a slasher film, like Michael Myers and Halloween. It was more like a mystery than a thriller/terror movie. I thought it was sort of "eh".

Raising Hope S2 is up... I like this show. Makes me laugh. Kinda like a modern day Roseanne with more likable characters and without the melodrama. :)

Indie Game. What an eye-opener. I had no idea Indie developers were such sensitive, fragile creatures, sacrificing so much in order to grace us with a window into their complex psyches.

Lol, of course it was. What did you go in expecting?

Decent action at least?

of course there not actors but was the action at least any good?

Some gaffers were praising it when it came out as having good realistic action. Yea this was just boring film, even the action was poorly shot and not even that realistic. They also seemed to be pandering to the COD generation with alot of the cinematography to use first person views. Everything about it felt like some direct to video action flick, and yea the acting was horrendous.

Well, the movie certainly did nothing to invalidate the stereotype of a crazy, obsessed socially distant nerd making videogames.

I thought the Team Meat guys were endearing, Edmund specifically. But Blow seemed a little out there and Phil Fish seemed like a narcissistic douchebag.

I have been watching Alias. I sort of dig it, about halfway through season 2. Without giving out any spoilers, does it just turn to complete shit at some point or should I keep on watching?

I remember watching it with my family when it first came out, and I think I left for college around season 5 or 6. I thought it was pretty good, though no one knew about the Abrams formula then. I'm not sure if they explain everything, but from what I recall my parents said there was closure by the end of the series.

Just cancelled my netflix. Selection was just too poor (canada).
Use Spotflux.

It's free and lets you watch American stuff. You can quit the application after you start streaming.

I thought the UK selection was awful (and it is compared to the US) but I'm happy with my subscription. It's great for older films and tv shows. If you want the latest blockbusters or tv shows you're going to be disappointed.
