I skipped that story, actually. A couple of my casual comic reading friends said the story was cool though. Guess there has to be something for everybody.

This makes very little sense man. If it's a good story it will exist in trade forever going forward. So why does it matter when it comes out? If it's good, you'll get around to it.

In comics we have an odd sickness (most likely related to our OCD collector mentality) that everything needs to be day one or bust. But it's really not like that. If it's good it'll be there till you're ready for it.

I mostly agree, especially if it's a miniseries and not an ongoing, but there are SO MANY good books out there that my interest level and monetary budget typically move on to other books when they take a year to release. I ended up getting Ivampire vol 1 still but i was close to not bothering with the series due to how long it took to release. If i don't pick up Talon monthly, by the time the trade releases there will probably be 3-7 new books that i'm more interested than that which will have released.

OK then, I see where you're coming from here but it actually says something quite interesting about the way you (and a lot of us) consume comics. If a comic is not good enough to wait and pick up at a later date, then why is it good enough to read day and date? Do you see what I'm saying? You'd read it if you can get it fast, but if you have to think about it and waut for the hype to wear off then you're not interested.

It's maybe the difference between a classic run and a flavour of the month. The classics will always be there, evergreen, but the run of the mill comics cool off fast so you gotta get em while they're hot.

If we extended this mindset to everything we read, we would be consuming far far few books! But maybe we'd all have more time and money to go back and read those classics we've missed?

Two new Marvel 'Season One' graphic novels got revealed: Wolverine Season One by Ben Acker Ben Blacker and Salva Espin, and Iron Man Season One by Howard Chaykin and Gerald Parel.

"Wolverine's history -- and future, for that matter -- is so rich that there was a lot to choose from," said Blacker. "We're big fans of Barry Windsor-Smith's 'Weapon X' story as well as a lot of the Alpha Flight-related stuff. The movie version, especially from the first 'X-Men' movie, was also in the backs of our minds in writing the character, as that is the version with which the majority of the Wolverine audience is most familiar. To make the story ours, we concentrated on the aspect most interesting to us: Logan's struggle between his civilized, 'human' side and his feral, 'animal' self.

The overall tone and feel of Chaykin and Parel's story will be both classic and contemporary. "In a weird sort of way it feels like a war book, but it's about a war fought between super powered men in a post-terrorist attack world. It's very much about the war on terrorism and the terrorism within ourselves. So it's a techno-thriller and that's sort of the main franchise with Iron Man," Chaykin explained. "Iron Man is a techno thriller character, but I always viewed Tony Stark as a flawed member of King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table. He wears the armor of a knight, but he's always questioning his role and whether or not he actually deserved his armor."

Does anybody even still READ Ultimate Marvel beyond Ultimate Spider-Man?

I've been told the latest Ultimate Spider-Man is boring and the Ultimate X-Men is the better book.

I've actually been considering going Ultimate-only. I'm mostly indie but still want a couple of superhero books, so having only a few comics in the Ultimate line is the appeal. The big convoluted universes with frequent crossovers is really starting to turn me off, but I'm still interested in checking out some of the Marvel NOW titles.

Ultimatum was a train wreck. I think they really went for the "anything goes" attitude for the shock value, and that can be eye-rolling for anybody reading the regular universe. Ultimatum did more to turn me away from Ultimate.

Unless you literally mean this month (in which case I don't know), no. USM-Miles has been really good, and UXM prior to Wood taking over was awful (Wood even makes fun of what came before him).

Also, Hickman's UU was great barring the somewhat unimpressive ending. Like Star Trek mirror-universe version of his FF run.

A charming tale about a captain america who is right.

Marvel is doing a Livestream from NYCC showing stuffs and ocasional interviews with people (Rememder, for example, talked about how he is planning Arnim Zola for Captain America and Kang for the Avengers, plus... someone else, I forgot. But he said he has 5 arcs planned).

It generally suck, there is 30 people watching, sound quality is horrible, people are unfunny and like, right now they are talking about shoes, but hey, you never know, I think they will broadcast all the Marvel panels that happens.

People support five different Batman (and 4 or 5 other Bat-family) books, so no reason a bunch of Lantern books can't coexist.

True for the Lantern specific ones, but i'd equate Threshold to something like Batwing, or REBELS. Rebels was one of my favorite books and tanked, i hope Threshold has some of the same quality with Giffen as Rebels did with Bedard, and that the book can last if its good.

EDIT: Looking up sales, Red Lanterns is selling better than i expected too.

REBELS was good stuff, agreed. And while Threshold isn't a Lantern branded book, one of the main characters is a GL and it has Larfleeze back ups, so I'd say it's still part of the family.

As a trade-waiter myself, I think it definitely helps keep on the track of only buying good books. There's some fluff I grab for fun, but that usually doesn't last, not when there are so many great DC, Vertigo and indie stuff that I could be reading instead. I still like my dose of DC superheroes, but I'd say it only accounts for 33% or so of what I buy. When you're waiting for the trades, I'm much less sucked into the flavors-of-the-week or whatever happens to have people talking this week. I'll grab the good stuff, experiment with new indies, and go back and find the classics or merely great non-current books.

So yeah, I would agree with your final hypothesis. I don't think trade-waiting and being selective ultimately reduces the number of books I'm reading. It just encourages me to buy what's really good, and perhaps to dig deeper to find what's not super popular and being talked about across the Internet.

Never said they should, just that they do. I agree completely that there are too many Batbooks, if you include all the Batfamily, that's what, 10-11 books dealing with Batman or Gotham in some form or fashion. Total overkill.

At least the Lantern books feature different characters and Corps.

I saw that sale and was disappointed that DC doesn't offer those old #1 issues free like Image does. All Star Superman is great and worth checking out, haven't read the other two. There's a lot of good books there, i'd also check out Superman Secret Identity...even though i'm not a huge superman fan those are two standout titles among many good #1s offered.

Most of the Image freebies were fairly new series with singles or trades still for sale. Their intent was to encourage more sales of the title. Pretty smart marketing IMO.
I don't think DC giving away firsts that are several years old would get more sales.

Except for the fact that no one is killing the Joker ever? It's a genre staple. It's completely rational unless every hero suddenly kills every really bad guy.
