To me this is actually better than I was expecting.... I really expected it to be $599 base with the covers extra (but I did think they would only be $50)

I am going to get the base 32 gig and add a touch cover when the first sale inevitably happens. I don't actually need touch cover on day 1.

In all honesty the Touch Covers probably suck from a functionality point anyways.

At first I was expecting a model with equal specs as an iPad but with cover at the same price.

Then all these rumours started flowing that they were really serious...

I'm holding out, at least for a while to see how this develops, if the whole Windows RT thing will do a Baumgartner without the parachute or be a huge success :)

Yeah tbh I was kind of hoping for a cheaper price but I think people are blowing this out of proportion. The 16gb iPad is the same price. RT also comes with a free copy of office as well and tbh I think it's the more capable tablet. The only issue as of now is the marketplace but that will change quickly enough anyway. This also has a Micro SD slot, mini HDMI, and USB 2.0

MS didn't learn any lessons from the meteoric fall of the HP TouchPad. Or from the Motorola Xoom. Or the Blackberry PlayBook. Or all the Samsung tablets. You can't price it like an iPad and expect to sell any.

Seems MS didn't learn a thing from Zune. Wasn't that years late and the same price as the then dominent iPod.

Had a few core fans but never really made it out the gates.

Looks like history repeating.

To be fair, they are planning to throw almost half a billion bucks against the wall in marketing efforts...

It looks like they are trying to do a Kinect. They could have priced it (much) lower but instead chose the higher price point and directed the difference towards marketing... Which is a valid choice. Just not a one that convinces me.

The big difference is though that Kinect didn't have any incumbent competition. Not a competitor that already dominated the market... so this should be interesting.

You'd buy a 16GB tablet with non-expandable storage? Maybe it's because I want more out of my tablets, but I don't think I could ever live with that.

You're buying peace of mind that your purchase will continue to have an established Ecosystem and you won't be dumping it early. I couldn't live with dropping a huge amount of money to be an early adopter when so many tablets have failed.

Honestly, all those tablets were pretty crappy.

And the Surface isn't going to be crappy? What does this thing actually bring to the table besides Microsoft Office? You can buy a $500 laptop instead which comes with a keyboard, runs Office, and runs all the other x86 Windows apps which Surface doesn't because it's ARM. I just don't get it, but I've been baffled by MS's strategy ever since WP7 flopped and they still haven't showed anything compelling. If Surface launched at $300 and included the keyboard, well okay then, let's check it out. At $620 including the keyboard it's the worst value in tablets ever compared to the iPad.

Cost is a bit higher than I had hoped. I know its a nice tablet but I was thinking it would be less due to Apple pricing their stuff with the "Apple Tax" attached, Microsoft wants to get into the market they need to offer a compelling experience at at least a slightly lower cost.

If they were to come up with a case that worked well with the keyboard I could see this being big at least in the Healthcare industry (I work in Healthcare IT) because everyone around here wants iPads instead of laptops but they realize how limited they are on the iOS and although they love the iPad they always miss a real keyboard and have a hard time sometimes using the remote apps available to do "real work". Having a keyboard as part of the case that works really well (Yes I'm aware of the Bluetooth keyboard cases for iPad) could be a huge plus. I hope to get my hands on one for testing and see how viable it would be in the work environment.

Exactly. People keep up the "nobody can compete with at the iPad price" mantra without looking at why that has been the case in the past. To put it simply, the previous competitors have sucked. Drop the price and people are willing to put up with it.

Microsoft is trying a different approach, releasing something that doesn't suck.

Serious question, have you used Windows 8?

FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS

(has that been said yet? I imagine it has)

Anyway, although I was more interested in the Surface Pro to begin with - I'm disappointed in the price. If the US -> GBP conversion is reasonable, the 32GB model + keyboard cover won't be too much more than an iPad 2, but the price is too high for me for what it is.

I think it leaves a door open for another vendor to be very successful though, as I'm certain the Windows 8 and Windows RT eco systems are going to thrive. I expect WinRT development to take off once its available, people are really underestimating the kind of reach all new desktops, new laptops, new Windows tablets and (to a lesser extent) new windows phones are going to have.

A little higher than i had hoped but doesn't sway my decision to get a Pro version when they are out. Just wont get an RT in addition to it.

so i can swipe back and forth while going "WEEEEEEeeee!" and then do nothing else

$119 for the touch cover? Oh dear...

Yeah was definitely hoping for a lower price. It costs the same as an iPad. I feel like when given the choice, people will just choose an iPad because they are more familiar with it.

The Surface pricing isn't that bad considering what you could do with it. I'm still a little disappointed though. Looks like the waiting is over for me. I'll be picking up the ipad2 now and just wait it out a little to see how the market place shapes up for windows8.

In the US, the iPad 2 is $399, while the 32 GB + Keyboard cover RT is $599. I don't see how converting to GBP will get it to just a little more than the iPad 2.

I'm thinking of iPad mini + Surface Pro. Win8 is definitely lacking apps now, but not-Metro is still far better than iOS as a tablet interface.

Does Win RT have a remote desktop connection app?

Serious question for you, what value exactly is added for the consumer by jerry-rigging Metro UI onto everything?

I can think of a couple, after using Metro exclusively for a while:

- Simplicity/consistency
- App performance (eg, compare Windows Live Mail to the Mail app - it's no contest)
- Proper app management (no installers/uninstallers crap, app suspension, Windows Store, etc)
- Proper support for high-resolution screens
- Notifications and live tiles

So far one oversea poster replied my earlier post and stated he may get one. :)

I would have been in for sure at $499 with cover. Without it, I would prefer to wait for the Pro.

That said, I'm really interested in what they come with regarding the subscription plans. If it is coming like $299 or $399 with a 2 year commitment to Xbox Music (which I'm already paying for), I'm in for sure.

I'm still interested in the Pro since I've always expected that to be around $1000. The only reason I want a tablet is to have something I could use full fledged Photoshop on with a Wacom pen away from my desktop which the iPad does not have the capability of doing.

The iPad 2 is £329 here, or around $529 US. You're right, in that we can probably expect a similar price premium on the Surface, but I do expect a 32GB + kb bundle could hit £400 or even less.

Thats true, IF (a big if) they come with a subscription plan to Xbox music (which i already pay for) im ready to "click in".

I was all up and ready to jump over to the Surface (coming from an ipad2) but that price is just too much for the sacrifice on only being on ARM so will probably end up getting the next ipad in March. For the price of an ipad3 I want a much higher resolution than this offers and was really expecting the base level Surface Pro to be 600-700USD not the top end RT. Guess I just misjudged Microsoft's pricing strategy on wanting to enter a new market.

This makes me more sad about the state of the traditional desktop than happy for the metro environment.

Not a chance, you're going to be looking at £500 minimum for the 32GB + KB, and probably closer to £550.

I feel like $499 should have been the expected price the entire time (in line with the competition) and whoever came with that $199 rumor trolled the hell out of us and played with our expectations. We went from expecting iPad prices to thinking, welll... $199 might not be realistic but they might do $299!
