Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

Not that bad considering with 32GB you get 27.93GB for a MS OS to be trimmed down to lets say 7GB's is a big deal for them.

oh yeah, i completely forgot about the difference in OS size between Windows and those other guys! yet another reason why a 16GB model would be a tough sell. might as well call it an 8GB model!

the keyboard cover is apparently sturdy enough for lap use, which I was wondering about at least

Does the kickstand arrangement work for someone who wants to type with Surface on their lap? To me it looks like it's only stable on a table top.
I want to get a Surface for the wife, but she'd be typing Facebook updates while lounging on the couch. Would that work?
Yes, she can certainly type Facebook updates from the couch while using Surface
hey, I've been using my Surface for a couple of month now. It works on your lap in multiple ways. Typing on the lap works fine, Surface is great for typing while on your couch. There are so many ways it folds and adjusts to your typing needs. You will be pleasantly surprised. :)

also, 65 and 86 wpm from two members of the team

Why does Windows RT even exist?

Honest question. Is there a reason they've segmented it Win 8/Win RT/Win Phone 8?

I was thinking of a clever retort...but can't.

I think the draw of ARM was supposed to be superior mobility (battery life) and price potential (noticeably less than iPad). Doesn't really feel like those things materialized.

I'd rather have a cheap Atom Pro than an RT. Of course, I'd buy neither (I'm going i5 Pro or nothing)....but I've never felt good about the RT and today doesn't change that at all. Feels like all of the weaknesses and none of the strengths of W8.

This will be no more successful than the android tablets priced £400+.

we'll see soon enough. the lack of strong PR to date means RT devices are something of a blank slate, to which the opinion of the media will create the mass market opinion of. It's not starting off on the right foot, and some times you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Man, I went to the preorder site and was all psyched at the price... then I noticed it was RT and that you have to pay extra for a good cover. Blech.

Hope the "pro" version comes in at sub-1k, but with those prices it doesn't seem likely.

But with these prices one can extrapolate that MS will price the Surface Pro head to head with the Macbook Air, so $899-$999 for the basic model is my bet

I hope a deal or sale comes up that includes a touch cover for 499 at some point. That would have been a really good proposition.

480 Euros for the 32 GB version. 580/680 for the other two.

wait a sec.... 480 is 625 usd.

NOT BAD MS. I was expecting 'lol change the symbol' pricing.

damn that makes it look good. if they can ramp up with the xbox games on this as well I'll be impressed. controller support for xbox games perhaps? I just wanna play binding of isaac on it! (which would require the pro and steam, as well as flash at this point, which is a dream that isn't happening I guess)

Better than the previous, and it could easily be trimmed to 30 seconds and still deliver the message

nope. because it's so new and such a departure for MS, there are several features that they have to discuss for several seconds each:

1.) The OS in general

2.) The touchpad cover

3.) Office

4.) That kickstand

...while spending enough time showing the main RT UI to make people want to go to stores to check it out.

Well yeah you are right, but a typical TV ad is 30 seconds long (dat attention span) so they could split this 1:30 minute ad in several ones for adressing all the points you mentioned without problem, it could work as long as they spam all the channels at every chance they have.

I imagine that this will really take off in my house when nextbox arrives.
Hopefully MS's plans are something similar to what I'm hoping for.
Also liking the new ad.
Also why are there two versions, RT and W8? Have MS learned nothing FFS.

Office is a big feature still makes me laugh, are there really that many people using Office on the go? Especially on a consumer device

New ad is much better and shows its defining features off nicely. It is it the first piece of non Apple hardware to give me that tech-lust for a long while.

Still think $500 with cover would have been a home run.

easily. It's that added cost that takes it into scary price territory.

No because this will be one of the first on the go consumer tablet devices to feature a proper version of Office. You presented kind of a chicken and egg scenario. On the other hand the number of people using Pages and the like is HUGE. SO there is demand for it.

That's...exactly the point. iPad is considered a consumer device because it sucks as a creation/productivity device. Surface, theoretically, will blur the lines between tablet and laptops.

Speaking anecdotally, yes, I would use my current tablet a LOT more if it weren't such a pain to type onto the onscreen keyboard.

Laptops sell more than desktops, and a huge % of those laptops have Office installed on them so yes, Office is not available in other devices so how can anyone now how many people would use MS Office on them, but office suites are always well ranked on iOS and Android as best sellers

think of all the people sitting in starbucks writing their blog that nobody cares about!

Some good stuff from the AMA:

Hi this is Stevie. It depends on how you type. I have been using both for a while, and love them both. I love the sleekness of Touch Cover. Touch Cover has a very special digitizer that we invented.. it senses the impact force of your key presses. We designed super-fast electronics and smart algorithm in the keyboard so that Touch Cover can profile your key press down to a 1ms (1000 times a second). Using that information Touch Cover can infer if the user meant to press the key or not.. It is a smart key. So even though there is no key travel, the user can rest their hands on top of the keyboard and find home position without accidentally triggering keys.. pretty cool! The first time I typed on a full working version of Touch Cover, I typed just as fast as I do on a normal keyboard. I am confident you will be able to type significantly faster on Touch Cover than an onscreen keyboard. And with a little practice you will even do better (maybe even faster!) For folks who really love and really need keys that have travel, then Type Cover is one of the best keyboards I have ever used (desktop or other). It has a super awesome snappy key mechanism that feels great (has a strong hysteresis curve). Honestly both are great… try them both, actually get them both.

Hey this is Stevie, yes absolutely. Both TouchCover and TypeCover have sensors that understand orientation relative to Surface… in fact the Type and Touch Covers talk to Surface to figure out their relative position no matter the orientation of gravity of the device (pretty neat!). There are 3 positions modes: Closed (keys and mouse are off), Open to 180 degrees (keyboard and mousepad on), beyond 180 degrees to the back (keys and mouse off). That way you can flip back the covers and feel secure you are not pressing keys by mistake.

Simply put. Many on the team are only using it. That is all they travel with. It has been phenomenal to watch it become the everyday PC of our team members lives.

Just have to say that while I think the Surface is a beautiful machine and I was super excited when it was first announced, I just can't justify spending 599 on one with a keyboard.

This is not to say I think the ipad is worth the 599, I don't. If I were to buy one or the other, it would be the surface for sure. But 600 dollars for either one of them is ridiculous to me for something that is going to ultimately just be used for netflix in bed, internet browsing on the couch, some shallow novelty games, and the occasional e-book (which is basically what I currently use my touchpad with android on it for).

Now that there are a couple decent tablets in the sub-300 category, with potentially another one about to be announced by Apple, I think the novelty factor of a large expensive tablet will not be able to overcome the opportunity for consumers to have a similar experience for half the price on a bit smaller screen.

That makes me sad because I really wanted the Surface to be super succesful, and I wanted one myself. I guess the landscape has just changed since then. The Pro may be a different story, we'll see.

I would absolutely make use Office with Surface. If I had the money at the moment I would get a Surface. I could sell my laptop, probably wouldn't get much however.

Didnt realize it had all those ports on it. That alone pushes it far beyond iPad. Living up here in Seattle means someone's bound to have one near me soon. Can't wait to check it out.

I don't think I've seen this being used in portrait mode yet, in any of the MS advertising... does it not work or something?

The new advertisement with the female narrator is waaaaaay better than any of the other commercials I've seen, the dancing one is kind of obnoxious.

However, one thing I find a bit odd, is how the device is literally propped up and stationary in every shot in that new ad. Don't get me wrong, the keyboard cover is slick and I'm jealous I don't have it for my iPad, but nevertheless, to me, the appeal of a tablet is holding it, not using it exactly like a netbook.

I am really liking what I'm seeing with this and the new lumia W8 phone but I'll never understand why my kids will still want ipad and iphone.
Although having office for this could tip her over, it's her biggest complaint with apple HW. She would love to carry her stuff from work on a USB stick and then plug it into this when she gets home, she can't do that with ipad and that's why ipad is nothing more than something to look at photos and post on FB.
