Can this be used during a full moon?

Why would someone even make a device like this when they can get the pro version (which is tooooooo expensive)? May as well get an iPad!

When this is said and done, this M$ must be cray if they thing I'm paying $888 for a crippled iPad.

They seriously effed up with this. THey could have destroyed Google and Amazon if they released it at $200 but at this price, I hope they fail.

Srsly! Why I gotta pay all this money to be plastered with ads? I stick with all the other ad-free aps on cheaper platforms thank you.

You know you don fucked up write Ms$?

I'm sorry, what?

Good morning Mr. Prinkles, please take your medicine.

Kind of think that it is $100 too much. Will wait for reviews. My iPad 1 is getting long in the tooth.

I totally feel the same way. I would've gotten this in a heartbeat if it was $399.99 without the cover and $4.99 with it. I may still get one it's a device thats now been regulated to wait for reviews.

FFS!!!!

So many comments saying its only $100 overpriced. Should have taken that margin money out of the ad budget or the windows division to make a real splash.

Now people will wait and app development will suffer. The chicken and egg scenario.

Pro was the only real option. But now I'm almost certain it is going to be $1200 or something stupid expensive.

I'll wait for the 2nd/3rd gen.

I agree totally, word of mouth works far better than dancing schoolkids.

I would love to see a detailed analysis of the whole thing from someone in the cognitive sciences. It's to the point where I can't just point and call it stupid anymore. It's just fascinating now.

Okay, since it's obvious you were serious: how on earth is it a crippled iPad? The app store is an obvious point, but there's no way you can call it less functional from a hardware perspective. And, as there are multiple models of the Surface and iPad, which one are you comparing it to, exactly?

So what's the battery capacity on this device? Tegra3 is the worst SoC when it comes to battery life. MS had better shoved a huge battery in it.

post from the ama regarding display quality vs ipad3
Hey I tried to answer this resolution question for another post, but it got stuck.. So I will try here:
Hey this is Stevie. Screen resolution is one component of perceived detail. The true measure of resolvability of a screen called Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), not Pixels. MTF is a combination of both contrast and resolution. There are over a dozen subsystems that effect this MTF number.. Most folks just focus on one number out of dozens that effect perceived detail. Without good contrast resolution decreases. Check out contrast sensitivity of the human eye graph (http://www.telescope-optics.net/images/eye_contrast.PNG) and if you want more see the links below. Basically, as resolution/DPI increases the eye has becomes less sensitive. So as a result, the amount of light in a room and the reflections off the screen have a huge effect on the contrast of the display. In fact, a small amount of reflection can greatly reduce contrast and thus the perceived resolution of the display. With the ClearType Display technology we took a 3 pronged approach to maximize that perceived resolution and optimize for battery life, weight, and thickness. First prong, Microsoft has the best pixel rendering technology in the industry (cleartype 1.0 and 2.0) .. these are exclusive and unique to Windows, it smooths text regardless of pixel count. Second, we designed a custom 10.6” high-contrast wide-angle screen LCD screen. Lastly we optically bonded the screen with the thinnest optical stack anywhere on the market.. something which is more commonly done on phones we are doing on Surface. While this is not official, our current Cleartype measurements on the amount of light reflected off the screen is around 5.5%-6.2%, the new IPad has a measurement of 9.9% mirror reflections (see the displaymate link: http://www.displaymate.com/iPad_ShootOut_1.htm). Doing a side by side with the new iPad in a consistently lit room, we have had many people see more detail on Surface RT than on the Ipad with more resolution.
Some more links to share if you want to know more… (http://www.normankoren.com/Tutorials/MTF.html)... Also This is a great book to read if you really want to get into it: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0819434965/?tag=neogaf0e-20 or more here http://alexandria.tue.nl/extra2/9901043.pdf

bolded the important part to me, at least. wasn't sure if the surface would have font smoothing, since they've used the cleartype moniker as a catch-all for their display, which is unnecessarily confusing. so, that's a relief, and will go a long way in making up for the somewhat low resolution (compared to other top-end tablets anyway)

wonder if it's IPS, though, as they've gone out of their way not to say. "high-contrast wide-angle" sounds like MVA to me

Isn't it obvious how?

Didn't they include Office 13 and the default apps into that estimate?

I really hope so. Considering classic Windows 7 is about 20 GB after a fresh install with its default config, I'm impressed at what they did here but that's assuming it’s with all the pre-installed software. I can't imagine that the typical [backwards] compatibility bulk that comes with Windows would be complicit on a SoC form factor.

:o

that's...not an acceptable amount of available storage for you guys, is it?

12GB free is like...that's how much the 16GB iPad has available. :-/

Can't watch right now, but the vid is of an display Samsung tablet, with what appears to be a number of applications installed on it.

In the Reddit AMA earlier, someone asked how much space is available on the 32gb model. He said "over" 20 gb, and this is with Office 2013 and the base apps already installed.

Do we know if Windows RT supports a java runtime to run java applications? I'm thinking the answer is no.

Yes, it does.

"WinRT desktop will be able to run Java and .NET apps, as well as native apps recompiled for ARM."

cool.

ummm that better have tons of apps on it

yea looks like it was. whew.

That's interesting. I'm getting into using Storybook (and may want to use it for Nanowrimo if I feel I have the time this year) which is a Java app, so the RT tablet almost seems like it would make a good use for that so long as it works. I definitely don't need Steam support or anything like that on it (would be nice to know whether there will be any text editors that support different programming language syntaxes though).

Java? Maybe you mean javascript…

That's right, no Java - only Javascript, C#, C++, and Visual Basic can be used to develop apps for the Windows Store.

And no plugins for the browser means no Java in the browser, unless Microsoft / Oracle have already come to some sort of arrangement for something like Java for embedded in the Windows RT runtime.

This is highly unlikely though, Microsoft don't really have anything to do with Java at all, it's competition for C# and they have never put any Java dev support in any version of Visual Studio. (Unless you include the awful Visual J++)
