Trying to place an order online for a Surface, error!
Try again, error!
Call contact number given after 3 tries, call hang ups.
Call again, someone who BARELY speaks English tried to process my order... same error!
After 30 minutes of barely being able to communicate with this guy he transfers me to another department

... I wait.

Finally someone who can speak proper English! She asks me how she can help me.
I tell her I would like to place an order for a 32GB Surface, she has no clue wtf it is.
She has no clue that next week MS is releasing their own tablet.

I guess I'll keep hit refresh until my order goes through online. This is horrible.

I'm on the complete purchase screen and having this error on microsoft.com "Sorry! Something went wrong. While we're fixing it, please try using the back button or refresh the page and try again."

:-/

Mine went through. Just placed it minutes ago through the USA online store. Now to wait for the 26th!

The caginess of Microsoft marketing reps giving us web assets makes me wonder if there's something else to announced next week.

Though knowing how marketing goes, they just don't know how to send me the damn assets.

Also ordered the Dell XPS 12 convertible x86 rig.

Taking a bit of a risk since it's an un-reviewed product but I think it looks pretty slick.

One of the things that I don't like about this things like the Lenovo Yoga is that the keyboard is always there atached which increases the weight son I don't see myself using them a lot on tablet mode.

This is really making me consider the Yoga 13 as well. But I'll probably hold off until I see reviews ofthe Pro. I just want to know which can run LoL better...

The XPS 12 is the same way. You can't remove the tablet portion.

I just like that I can feasibly use the swivel feature to bring the touchscreen closer to me while it's on my lap.

The Samsung ATIV/SmartPC/Slate/WHATEVER has only 2 GB RAM.

That's why I don't trust these x86 tablets. As if the Atom doesn't sound weak enough, they all come with only 2 GB RAM. What is this? 2004?

Yeah. And if you want 4 GB RAM you have to spent 1200 :P. I will give the benefit of the doubt that the way the hardware is running is probably more efficient than laptops from back then.

in the US it doesn't say sold out, but it says 'within 3 weeks' rather than 'within 2 - 3 weeks' now. they've also reordered the devices on the screen, so it goes low price to high now, instead of high to low.

I tried ordering from the US site but it wont let me :-/

Black and Cyan Touch Covers temporarily sold out, spoke to a rep and they said all I can do is refresh and hope order goes through.

that doesn't make any sense. the black covers are sold out? who the heck was buying those seperately? i see they've taken them away as a choice though now. perhaps they had to start pulling from the seperate black ones in order to cover all the orders for the bundled ones? not sure.

MS is limiting supplies on purpose to drum up demand!!!

if it wasn't the black covers too, i'd consider the possibility... but what kind of maroon was buying a black touch cover seperately in the first place? it's $20 more expensive to buy one that way... were people buying a spare? it's just a bit mad.

Buying the first revision of a new product isn't a good idea anyway.

Yeah, I think I will. It's going to be hard I'm sure but ultimately worth it. With my wife graduating and us moving next year I don't see us buying four tablets next year. Maybe. Plus we have this iPad 2 that I should probably start using.

interesting choice. what are the weight specs on it?

I'm sure not matter what they are, it's lighter than my 2007 Elitebook Tablet and thus would be an upgrade. I wonder about the longevity and durability of the swivel itself.

it looks like a very sensible and sturdy design to be honest. depends on what kind of connectors they've got running through the pivot, but the mechanics of it should be fine.

These people know their stuff. No one should even try to deny that. But when they start talking about Microsoft stuff, it's exhausting.

I think they're completely right. The Verge didn't say it, they were quoting someone else who said and then discussed what he said. So you're wrong on that.

Secondly, the person that did say it is right. There is a bit of an air of desperation to all of this. It really is the make it or break it moment for microsoft and their future. Everything is on the line, on the path they've chosen to pursue.

That's not a NEGATIVE COMMENT. It's just....the way it is. This is their chance to get into these markets and secure their windows future (metro) with the mass public.

People don't buy tablets for the form factor. They buy tablets because it runs iOS.

What.

I don't know one person who has one and bought it because of that. If anything, you might be more inclined to stick with an ipad if youve already invested a lot of $ on apps on an iPhone already or something, but because of iOS specifically? Thats a first.

Based on sales to date, he's right. Numbers don't lie. Nobody gave 2 fucks about Android tablets, with all due respect to our hardcore Transformer acolytes. TabletPC's have been the very definition of "niche". Meanwhile, Apple conspicuously sold what? 80 million of their tablets in 2.5 years? Yea...he's absolutely right, whether that truth encroaches on your sensibilities or not.

As of the 26th, that begins to change.

lol, that's the same thing, really. We're parsing words when the point is that people were buying Apple tablets because they were running an OS they were familiar with and either (a) have already invested in or (b) have heard enough good things about to be willing to invest in. His phrasing was a bit lazy, but there's no reason for people to start acting dense about it.

Make sure you see my edit..

The screen isn't removable. Cnets article is.. misleading to say the least.

http://www.cnet.com/laptops/dell-xps-12/4505-3121_7-35427784.html

They throw a picture of the hybrid XPS 10 right in the middle of their XPS 12 review..

And they don't explain it whatsoever.

It's 3.35 pounds BTW.

yea I caught that. I was wondering, as it looked like a completely different computer. lol. 3.5lbs...something to think about. Not bad, but not ideal either. I'll have to look up how much my Elitebook Tablet weighs to get an idea.

I jumped in during that conversation so I didn't catch the part that they were quoting someone about it and honestly I agree with it. They should be desperate to be relevant. All tech companies should be, if they don't then you're RIM. If you don't then you're Palm.

Who are you talking to? Because I don't disagree with their statement.

Hahahahaha, please tell me you're exaggerating this.

I wonder how Tom Warren doesn't get an aneurysm.

Tom Warren is not even on the podcast.

The argument was that iOS is a "much nicer ... er, simpler OS".

Id be curious to know if the person who said that even tried the others. Does the article say?

Paul Miller said it. He used Windows 8 "a little bit", which sounds to me like "yeah, I've used it for 5 minutes, before I went back to write my book about being offline on my iPad".

He also complained about some shit Sony did with their Duo 11. Like there's their premium writing app is a desktop app and not a Metro app.
Stuff like that was probably the reason for Microsoft to build their own thing.

Unfortunately, a lot of the more hardcore Apple fans are like that from what ive noticed around me, so i completely believe it which is why i asked.

Microsoft will never be RIM or Palm. They do too much right. It's just that they're struggling to find a way to lead in emerging markets. Always a day late to the party.

I personally think their timing isn't BAD with their tablet approach...but I wonder. If I were MS, I'd *never* bring Office to iOS. I swear to God, it's the only piece of software keeping iOS from being the dominant tablet platform for the next decade. I think Office is that big a deal. I think MS should keep that trump card...but I know they won't.
