Vita PSN Game And Service Thread

No, he means that PSP is done in NA/EU for these kind of games and they are exploring other opportunities (port to another console) to bring the game here. It's not conclusive but at least there are intentions of doing that, it seems.

That sounds all very plausible and stuff, but they have other opportunities to take that they haven't. They can release the game on 3DS, on the Vita, or both or even on the PS3 and they're not doing that. Wasn't the game released in Oc 2011 for the Japanese market? They surely should come up with something after a year if they really have intentions of releasing the game. Then there is Lord of Apocalypse that they haven't mentioned about bringing over and that's on the Vita.

We can't really blame PSP's death for the way RPG fans are getting treated nowadays. They don't release them as easily like they used to for a while. Right now it's like they want to make sure it sells billions or crap like that.

Considering the AC Liberation bundle, I have a 3DS but can't resist even more AC3. Assume that's a decent title and not gonna kill my enthusiasm right off the bat? I also have PS Plus but dunno if there's any Vita freebies on there.

PS Plus news for Vita will be announced next week (at least in EU)

We are an endangered species huddling in dark corners clinging to Xseed. Once in a while we get visited by Atlus Claus and visits from crazy uncle NISA.

It feels that way. Seriously, it's so depressing to be an RPG fan outside of Japan. I've been holding off on importing Type 0 and Valkyria Chronicles 3 in hopes of getting the English versions, but it looks like we might be forced to import after all. There might be no other options.

This is what pisses me off, it's like those days are long gone. Early 2011 was really great when they released The Third Birthday, Tactics Ogre and Lord of Arcana all around Feb. Those games are considered even less popular and more risky than FF Type-0. We're in this age where we're not even sure if stuff like Bravely Default, Valkyria Chronicles 3, Dragon Quest VII or FF Type-0 are coming. WTF?!

It's pretty obvious that the sales of their early western 2011 PSP releases didn't do as well as they were expecting. There's a reason why they never bothered with Lord of Apocalypse for PSP/Vita in the west, nor did they make a fuss about Final Fantasy III being released on PSP in the west either. They're done with that platform.

As for VC3, IIRC SEGA has straight up said that's not coming over because VC2's sales weren't good enough.

Also yes liberation will get you hooked if you enjoy AC3

Ah I see. So basically it's not really an improvement and the added events are more superficial rather than containing any substance? It does seem that way from the brief trailers I've seen.

Still I've been wanting to replay it regardless, and choosing your skills when fusing alone makes it worth it!

Yup. Superficial and small is the way I'd describe them. The only aspects that could be seen as objectively detrimental are some of the new battle animations. Things like Rise joining in on all-out-attacks, which turns the skull-shaped cloud of smoke into a pink skull with pigtails, or the incredibly silly (But kind of fun?) bike and co-op attacks. Also they've changed the battle theme, which is a shame.

Picking your skills makes fusing miiiiiles easier though. Weird they never included it before now.

Wow been traveling so in and out of this thread. Really shocked at reviews for MW and ACL. Sad ios games get a pass.

Liberation is indeed really good. Definitely feels like an Assassin's Creed game.

PS+ freebies coming this month

This is my thought process as well. I've also been thinking about it a bit more, and Persona 4 feels like such a complete game on its own, that I am completely fine with the new content just being fun fanservice stuff.

So whats the deal with Most Wanted? I hear its a bit more of a multiplayer game than a single player one, and I'd be buying it pretty much for the latter. Would it still be worth it at full price just for the single player?

I'm ~7 hours in in single player and have only played about 20 minutes in multi, saving that up for when I've 100% completed SP. It's definitely worth it.

Yeah, it's fucking ridiculous. MW is a nearly perfect port from a console/PC game to a portable and IGN giving it 7.4 (PS360 version got 9) because there's less traffic and the graphics aren't up to par with the "big" version? Seriously, you have to consider the platform you're on when reviewing it.

EDIT: sorry for dp due to quoting :/

Not at all. It's a game that rewards you for exploring. I end up playing for hours just looking for jumps, billboards, gates & new cars. Then I remember I should be doing the races too. lol

So has anybody else been waiting for UPS shipments from Newegg, Amazon, etc, since hurricane Sandy came through? I had my RO preorder from Newegg in place since the day it was announced and I've gotten these weather updates/excuses:

So wtf is going on? Neither Newegg or UPS can tell me. Yes I can understand the hurricane knocking out power and stuff but AFAIK it was mostly only the tri-state in my area that got hit hard, New York especially. This is also factoring in that the coastal regions were the ones with considerable damage (obvously). Tennessee? I don't think they were affected at all.. I can't see how they're being prevented from bringing it to NJ now.. it's just infuriating because I really want my copy of the game, for the price newegg gave me :\

My copy of Liberation from Newegg is out for delivery today. I'm actually surprised that it is since a bunch of roads are closed and my town still doesn't have power.

I think it's reviewing ok, it's more the criticisms levelled at it aren't really fair.

Ah yeah, was just reading the IGN review. I see what you mean.

It's a bit of a conundrum though since a critic really has no choice but to compare it directly to the PCS360 versions -- it's the same game. And most people will be purchasing one version only.

This is why console ports are always going to be a bit sticky. I wish devs would focus more on giving Vita versions features unique to the platform which make sense, without resorting to throwaway gimmickry.

I don't know, maybe some Vita owners might spring for the PS3 version for the cross platform profile sharing?

The vita is in a shitty position when it comes to the gaming press. It's constantly being compared to home consoles and PCs which isn't fair considering that we know it's less powerful (but, um, slightly more portable) but it isn't compared to other handhelds.

Take Most Wanted. If you are comparing it to the PS3 version (i have both) and you say the PS3 version is a 9 then yes, the Vita version is probably a 7 or 8.

But, if you take Most Wanted and compare it to every other big portable racer on the Vita, 3DS, DS, iOS and Android it's easily a 10/10 - hands down the best and most ambitious racing game for a portable platform.

It seems no professional reviewers are looking at the Vita as a portable device though and instead everything gets compared to consoles which we know have more power than the Vita, so Vita reviews will always be low. I also think the utter contempt that a lot of the gaming press has for the device doesn't help (which doesn't come across so much in their writing but most podcasts loooooooove to take a shit all over the thing).

MLB The Show and FIFA are the two best portable sports games i've ever played. Neither cracked 80 on metacritic.

Well said, I agree 100%.

I haven't found a single, well-known review outlet that consistently reviews Vita games on their own merit. It's all "compared to the console version..." and "when viewed beside it's console counterpart..." yada yada.

Yup - it's really disheartening, too.

Yeah I mean, if they're going to compare the Vita version to the console version and knock it because its not graphically as good, then they should be consistent and knock the console version's score because its not graphically as good as the PC version.

In a (two) nutshell(s).

Don't give up hope though. The tide will turn. Believe.

Good point. You almost never see that mentioned and the graphical jump between a decent PC and consoles at this point is actually much bigger than the jump between consoles and the vita.

But for some reason in the gaming press it's not fair to compare console to PC games. But it is fair to compare a handheld device to a console. Makes zero sense.

I know this stuff isn't the end of the world or anything it's just a pet peeve that I was hoping would subside after the launch but clearly has not.

My first handheld system was a Game Boy and was well-versed in many of the "ports" the system got - the word is in quotation marks for a reason.

What the Vita can do is a damn miracle to me. If a handheld came out in 1997 that could link to Tekken 2 on PSX it would've been the greatest thing ever. Now we shrug.

You guys give way too much credit to gaming journalists.
They're not actually journalists and the job doesn't pay any kind of money whatsoever.
They're poorly paid entertainment evangelists that sadly carry a great deal of influence over consumer spending habits within a multi-billion dollar industry.

The crux of the matter, basically, is that scores are bollocks. This wouldn't even be a problem if people didn't fixate on numerical rankings.

They ... I'm not shrugging, and I don't see many others here shrugging either. ;) I started played Most Wanted today and liking it a lot so far! Especially all the smooth, integrated leaderboard stuff, auto-log, free roaming, easy race restarts, etc. City is massive and has lots to see. Pretty close to (Burnout) Paradise in a pocket ...

Simultaneously disappointed and elated by NFS

Graphics are pretty poor. Lack of reflections or effects on the road is bad, and the textures turn to mush not far from the car. Textures generally aren't great either.

Good stuff is your car, the shadows (lo res but even trees cast them) and the lighting - love the way your headlights light up other cars, reminds me of a racing game on dreamcast where you raced on the Tokyo motorways.

Overall graphically I'd much rather they'd not been so ambitious in some areas and shared the love around a bit more evenly.

But having a little NFS in the palm of your hand is great fun. The autolog integration feels even better for me, because the HUD is larger so you can see your friends times etc more readily. Reminds me of motorstorm RC in that respect. The ay your SP points carry across from Ps3 to vita is good, so I could instantly open a most wanted race. But I still had to unlock cars and earn mods - EA should look at syncing that across too.

Quick question for the people in this thread.

Did you chose the Vita over the 3DS? If so why?

Just curious as I am tempted by the $145 3DS target has.

Games and Franchises I prefer. The Wii was my last affair with my long standing history with nintendo.

In a (two) nutshell(s).

Don't give up hope though. The tide will turn. Believe.

You are optimistic. I have no faith in the industry since last gen.

Even if protecting scathing or illogical reviews under the guise of "opinion" the bigger issue I have with some reviewers is consistency.

I wonder do they also do this with 3DS and iOS versions, or are they reviewed for what they are?

Whether you own a Vita or not, there's so much truth in this post.

On the gaming press comment: this is why I'm irritated that Giant Bomb--a usually respected gaming site--gave their AC Liberation review to Alex Navarro, a guy who doesn't even like the AC series. Why didn't they give him the AC III review then, too?

Wait is Red Star playable on the Vita? I wanted to transfer it from my PS3 to my Vita but it doesn't recognize the game >_>;

I wonder do they also do this with 3DS and iOS versions, or are they reviewed for what they are?

TBH, more likely I think they just wouldn't even be reviewed. The Vita is in a unique position because it actually creates some demand for these games on a handheld. Enthusiast gamers wouldn't buy a hypothetical 3DS version of NFS:MW anyway. It's not why they own a 3DS.

Liberation is indeed really good. Definitely feels like an Assassin's Creed game.

Lovely stuff! Don't know why I want so much Assassin's Creed, the main game's pretty damn big, but it looks cool. Better than some of those iOS/DS games that came out, although admittedly I only played a couple of them on my phone which isn't my favourite gaming platform in the first place.

Wish I could see more Vita footage, does any site have the capture kit stuff? I've only realised since the Vita came out just how much I rely on, say, the Giant Bomb quick looks to get me to pay attention to a game.

It seems like Alex is on Vita duty and, to be fair, it is a very busy season for reviews. Ryan was doing AC3, Brad had Medal of Honor, Jeff had Halo, dunno about Patrick (he might not even have a Vita). But yeah, in that case I'd probably rather no review at all than a review from someone who doesn't like/get/whatever this particular series of games.
