You're wrong, we all know who the best rapper is.
Dylan, Dylan, Dylan Dylan and Dylan.
Because he spits hot fire.

The only way I'll reopen the studio is if you go up to the Bronx, and get me some breast milk from a Cambodian immigrant.

I only drink the finest breast milks.

I think most people seem to forget how fucking awesome Ice was, I mean not in this thread but whenever I talk to friends about rap, they usually don't consider him and write him off. I think it's because how shitty he got later on, and how funny it was to see him become this family-friendly movie dude that contradicted everything he stood for earlier on, but hey I'm not talking shit.

Old Ice is probably one of the best of all time. I haven't tried to make like a top 20 list in my head for years, but I'd think he would make the cut for sure. He just goes so hard on every track, and the lyrics usually matched that intensity. He wasn't afraid to also stray from "average" styles of gangster rap, usually infusing usual stories and tales with unique spins and beats, A Gangsta's Fairytale for example.

Interesting way of spelling Kanye, OP.

I like Kanye but I don't know where to put him. On one hand, the college trilogy is probably like the only trilogy of albums that were all top-quality, with each being better than the last, but then he made a musical masterpiece in 808's, but it wasn't really a rap album, or at least rap felt like it was in the back seat to just pure instrumental creativity. That same principal goes hand in hand with MBDTF, but not really as genius or innovative as 808's.

Personally, I would love to see a new Kanye solo rap album. I feel like I was way too over-hyped for Cruel Summer, as I couldn't really bring myself to care enough to listen to the majority of the tracks, as they didn't feature Kanye; although all the songs with Kanye were fantastic.

If my back was against the wall, I'd likely agree with you, but I disagree about his style not being emulated by others. I think nobody can touch the polish and delivery of that kind of style, but I think it's been emulated by others.

I don't know who the best rapper of all time is, but it can't be a gangsta rapper. Nothing against gangsta rap but it's limited in terms of themes and nuances and lyrical content. Hip-Hop is so much more than that.

Actually, who was the "first" when it comes to it? I know NWA is always given credit as the pioneers, and maybe that's true, but was anyone before them?

Side note, but I also think Kanye is terrible. Any thing decent he does have to talk about is ruined by his bad wordplay and horrid voice. The only thing he can execute on is production and that's it, which I'm not a fan of but respect his work in the area.

Lack of broadness in themes really doesn't compare to pure lyrical creativity and refined delivery. Not to mention a lot of gangster rap, to me, has that intangible element of having some real soul to it, as a lot of the time the stories you are hearing are modeled around true events in these rapper's lives, or at least their past lives before their rapping career.

Why should first matter? I mean creativity and innovation is definitely important aspects of music, but should they really trump every other aspects?

There is no best rapper of all time.

No but here is a GOAT...

Greatest wrapper of all time kicking the raw raps on wax wrap.

I think it was Ice T. Eazy-E/NWA really made it mainstream though.

He died at the height of his popularity and gets a lot of undeserved props as a result. Same goes for most popular dead rappers.

joke thread

big l is the greatest

Definitely the best punch line rapper of all time.

This is why I hate these kinds of ranks. There are so many different style of rappers you can't just compare them directly.

True but B.I.G. is truly great. Any rapper with the name Big who died young was awesome: Biggie, Big Pun, Big L.

That's a valid point, but you have to acknowledge that he batted 2 for 2 in terms of just albums. Ready to Die and Life After death are two of the best rap albums of all time. Who knows, maybe he would have went downhill fast like many other rappers, but it's not really fair to play the "what-if?" game. Based on his work's consistency, limited as that work may be, I don't see it all that odd to put him in that top spot, or near it.
